article on how some of MJ's iconic sounds were made:

Sorry there, missed yr comment micro. AR just wasn't for me...
I really wanted an analog drum synth but 90% of what makes the AR 'instrument' is the interface, which would be fantastic if the synths sounded amazing and were more tweakable... but they're really nothing special. Ended up augmenting them so much with samples that I wasn't using the analog side at all... but, it's a pain in the ass to transfer samples to...
Overall, the AR seems gimmicky in comparison with the other Elektron boxes. The AK is so flexible that IMO it's capable of better analog drum sounds) ... even Overbridge makes more sense with the AK.
Deciding wether to replace it with another A4, some eurorack drums or an Acidlab Drumatix (my 606 is on the way out)
- Fair enough comments on the AR. Sounds pretty dissapointing. Yeah sounds like you'd be better off just using software like Maschine for drums instead of AR.microkorg
- My GAS for an A4 still lingers. The monomachine looks pretty good for a all-tricks-in-one-bo... / take-1-thing-to-play... type thing :)microkorg
- my 2 cents.. i sold Monomachine after 6 months, sounds are too limited.. A4 sent back within the first 3 weeks.. Octatrack kept and love.autoflavour
- i've had them all except the octo. down to just the AK now. sidstation is the only big regret, sold it in 2005 for £450!kingsteven
- yeah i am pretty tempted by the AK.. just no budget anywhere for such extravagancesautoflavour

Some of the eurorack drums are amazing. All of the Tip-Top line, except the kick drums (which are shit for some reason). The Jomox kick is massive though. Probably the best drum machine kick I've ever heard. Lots of parameters for editing too.

Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssss kits plz khtx.
- looks like only PCBs are gonna happen, very diy dopeprophetone
- such a stupid argument. 30 years of miniaturisation and advancement of technology discounted because they dont look the same.autoflavour
- agreed. however i do appreciate the sameness personally, but presenting that as an argument is splittin hairsprophetone
- the bassbot already achieved a close enough in my books. however the diyer in me wants pcbs!!prophetone
- I say this as i sit here on two sets of xoxbox pcbs, lol, i have a sicknessprophetone
- the only thing that bugs me about the TT303, and this is a tiny insignficant thing.. but Y U NO 18db Filter, Y U 24db.. it would beautoflavour

Got the chance to play with the Roland Boutique Range today along with their AIRA and Modular ranges too.
Such massive sounds from the little Boutique boxes!

autoflavour,
Do you still have / use your Push?
I was originally using Ableton using the (now antiquated) APC40 then switched to use Maschine for a couple years-ish.
I am missing the level of control that Ableton offered. What were the problems / shortcomings when using the push if you don't mind my asking?
To anyone else reading, what do you like or not like about the Push? I will likely be returning to Ableton from Mashine soon, so input on the changes would be nice to hear about from people using it.
Thanks.

Just made this for some of my home videos of the kids. Used iMaschine on the iPhone.

imbecile - to be honest, i think it had a lot to do with the kind of music I make and the way I make it..
I make beats, usually heavily cut up audio in session view.. either stuff i record live in from synths or shit i find and then rework into new things.
I totally understood the technology, that wasnt the reason.. it was just it ended up feeling like most of the time i was a impediment to my creative process instead of a tool..
i kept finding myself switching back to just using a mouse and a midi keyboard as it was faster.
but like i said, i think that was more due to the music i was making.
i think if i was making more compositions from scratch using the live synths etc, it definitely is a fun tool.
also i dont play live using ableton, only hardware samplers etc.. so the performance aspect was completely lost on me.
that said, i have friends who swear by it.. especially for performance.
i guess in the end i just kept finding my music being informed by the tool rather than it just being an interface.. I found myself making things that sounded a certain way which I could always trace back to it being from the Push.
after 4 months of trying, it just started to gather dust..
i left for a few months, tried a few more times and then just decided to eject before it became too depreciated in price.i love ableton, i use it pretty much exclusively .. which considering i came from protools, reason, reactor etc is a reasonable endorsement..
i think if i was making more techno/house music.. i probably would find it better.
this new one does look cool.. but yep, i struggle to make use of all the shit already have.. im more of nerd for synths..

- Could be worth the trade for a new toy if the other gear is unused.microkorg
- I'd search on YouTUbe for demo vids of this synth - theres every chance it may sound dated.microkorg
- I know someone that had one. Looks a lot cooler than it sounds, imo. Definitely has that Korg VA sound to it (think electribe).section_014
- So, if you like the electribe'ish VA sounds, you'll probably dig it. I, personally, did not.section_014
- they were kind of cool when they came out, but yep there is a lot to cringe about now.. but if early 2000's VA synths are you thing, its goodautoflavour
- MS2000 is a monster. I used to run mine through an EHX tube EQ when live and it sounded so good. they are cheap now too.futurefood

@Imbecile
Do you have an iPad?
Check out the Touch-Able app for Ableton Live.
You can basically control everything and more like the old Push.I guess they'll probably add more to the app to make it competition for Push 2.

i dig some of it

For those who use Logic to record, anyone have some tips on how to set up UltraBeat to basically be a midi step sequencer with synth sounds, not drum sounds?
- hi - you can load any samples into each ultrabeat channel. but sounds like you are better off using the sampler.fadein11
- do you mean like a 303? there are plenty of plugins that emulate a step synth/sequencerfadein11
- Not sure you can do that since it's setup for drums, not different pitches (like a 303).section_014
- Look into Numerology 4 w/ a launchpad. Dopest sequencing setup out there, imo.section_014
- ultrabeat only plays samples - but plenty of plugin synths have a step sequencer... but dont really understand why you would need itfadein11
