i'm checking in on everybody's projects. tell or show me what you're working on!
txyzinfo, how's the persistence of vision display going?
anything new, georges?
i'm jumping into arduino with nothing but javascript and a little tinkering under my belt, and as i tend to get obsessed over things this thread will probably start showing up a lot more.
my first project will be converting a coffeetable into a mirrored coffeetable with a MAME arcade built in. the screen won't be visible through the mirrored finish until it boots up.
second project will be converting my LED light staffs to use individually addressable LEDs so i can do add customizable pattern sequencing. will use arduino micro for this.
- will be adding persistence of vision to the light staffsscarabin

*bump
Any recommendations for an Arduino ingenue like myself who wants to learn how to use the platform to 'make a machine'?
I was helping a computard friend update the firmware that underpins his 3D printer last night, and it was less hair-raising than I'd imagined.
His board was a Mega-something.
I'm after a board/kit that I can learn, and then scale. If kit, then ideally something honed towards controlling stepper motors, etc.
Any recommendations?
Is the 'Getting started with Arduino' book mentioned earlier, published in 2011, still relevant, or is there something .. betterer and more contemporarier?
Thanks, all - I've a long learning curve ahead!

..or, failing that, any good forums you'd recommend?

I get the impression I'm better off just watching YouTube videos and taking notes, which is what I'm doing now.
I forget - 'internet' :)
.
Still, I'm curious to know what's a 'good' Arduino to go for - or, simpler still, what's the 'best one'?

Detritus, this is honestly all you need,
one you'll be done with the book, you'll see how easy it is to make shit

Basically I'm wanting to build a CNC-type rig with some fairly heavy-weight stepper motors, so I want a high end Arduino that can process quickly and has enough ...capacity... to receive a large instruction set without falling over too easily.
Will that do?
Not too bothered about cost, I'd rather the get the most appropriate thing now, then run with it.
Thanks!
- Due?
http://store.arduino…detritus - Sorry, should stress - it's the *speed* that's important to me. I think the Due looks like the one :)detritus

right now i'm using an arduino micro and a wireless decoder to remotely ignite homemade smoke bombs.
after researching all this stuff i'm sure i'm on a government list somewhere.

I highly recommend the arduino forums. Sorry i don't have the links on me, but a quick google should pull them up. their stickies and faq answer a LOT of the beginner questions if you're like i was and are looking to build something specific really fast without learning about random stuff like sensors, led's, etc. (unless, of course that interests you)
I got up and running doing some LCD video drawing/animation using that as one of my primary sources as well as one or two tutorials i found through google.
also, i recommend ebay for finding good deals on arduino boards and shields. esp the shields - they are dirt cheap if you're buying from a seller in china and they'll usually throw in random goodies to get your sale.
- you should put a disclaimer though,
lot of chinese chips and boards are cheap knock off or even just faked,
buy on ebay/alibababa, but be carefulgeorgesIII - perhaps. their seller feedback usually helps deter these types of issues. just to be clear i bought the shields this way - not the arduino boards :)SteveJobs
- you should put a disclaimer though,

my cat isn't so fond of it

this is based on one of the projects in that kit. i had just seen that horrible ouija movie so turned it into a "spirit board".

some nasa soldering standards. pretty interesting.

- Actually slightly wish I'd not posted this now - I thought she was cool at first.. now I see she's just a desperate attention-seeker: http://imgur.com/a/k…detritus

- this will blow your mind but my sjw colleague said it was sexist untill I showed him the pic of the girl doing it, then it said it wasn't sexist anymore,GeorgesII
- I wish I was making it up, but tumblr is leaking out on my life :( he even used the term, damsel in distress, DAMSELLL IN DISTRESSS!!GeorgesII
- I have literally no idea what you're on about - are you invoking fedoras, or something? wth's 'sjw'?detritus
- ok, let me eli5, I'm all excited while showing this project to my desk neighboor which is a social justice warrior, he immediately goes on a rant on how thisGeorgesII
- skirt is sexist and it objectifies women, I scroll down and shows him the picture of the girl building it herself, and ask him if it's still sexist now, hisGeorgesII
- response was no because she made it herself, I ask him what's the difference, apparently if a man makes this, it's suddenly sexist, except if the guy making itGeorgesII
- is gay, I shit you not,GeorgesII
- women objectifying themselves isn't a result of male conditioning?scarabin
- She looks like a dude********
- her execution is real shitty. she's only getting hits 'cause she's got boobs. i've since made and sold better ones to friendsscarabin

- sure, i'll try and fritz it out or something later. just dicking around with this IC http://nuewire.com/i…scarabin
- only thing about this design is there's only one mode. gonna add buttons 'n' shit and give it more featuresscarabin
- i'd like to make a controller that visitors can fuck with to make it interactive. or use sensors so you don't have to touch anythingscarabin
- have you look into the bare conductive touchboard, I have one and I'm pretty sure you'll be able to achieve what you want :)GeorgesII
- yeah, or something like this https://www.youtube.…scarabin
- this guy did basically the same thing but his seems more dialed in, maybe start with that. he's using the MSGEQ7 as well https://www.youtube.…scarabin
- basically that IC takes audio signals and splits it into groups of frequencies, which you can then use to control channels of color using mosfetsscarabin

I ordered 20,

here's how you can shrink your arduino projects into a cheap, small ATtiny45 or 85 microcontroller.
- thanks man,
I forgot about this chip, just ordered 5 on amazon
