This is stupid:

Holmes was being held in solitary confinement at a Denver-area county detention facility and was not cooperating to authorities, Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said.“He lawyered up. He’s not talking to us,” the chief said.
--
http://denver.cbslocal.com/2012/…Uh, no. He's not talking because he doesn't want to talk. He was assigned a public defender, and he's not talking to that person either. That's not "lawyering up."
- well, it might imply he's waiting to talk to his own lawyer, which means lawyering up, I guessmonospaced
- lawyered up sounds like street talk.dbloc
- not talking to authorities and not talking to his public defender are two different thingslocustsloth

Id subject him to a lie detector test. Then When he is in prison his every minute should be broadcast to the world everyday he is in prison.
- YES! Give him the notoriety he'd hoped he'd get! That'll fix 'im!locustsloth

- fewer guns = less violence, arguing against that... I dunno, just sounds dumbmonospaced
- the thing is strict gun laws don't equate to fewer guns.sikma

- Just look at the amount of gun crime in the UK compared to the US. Then look at the gun lawsqTime
- USA has 10x the gun violence of Canada, after population adjustment to ensure a per capita stat.ETM
- I don't know how Americans don't believe there is a correlation.ETM

"Just Facts" has a page dedicated to the topic of gun control.

While i concur that additional gun laws won't stop those who have no qualms about breaking other laws, this guy wasn't a criminal until he started shooting.
This guy was planning to shoot 'em up and get away, as evidenced by his armor and the fact that he didn't off himself. He planned this act and took great steps to boobytrap his apartment. This guy thought about this. A lot.
My point is that placing more checkpoints and roadblocks in front of this guy may have changed the nature of his crime. Instead of having an assault rifle at the ready, he would have solely had to use a pistol or shotgun, both weapons with slower re-fire rates and (in the case of the pistol) less lethal rounds. And if he had also been prevented ready access to the pistol, he may have scrapped the act altogether or found a less lethal (in terms of numbers of injured/killed) weapon like a sword or a knife.
Saying that more gun laws won't have any effect is like saying that stricter gun laws are going to stop all gun deaths. Both statements are incredibly naive and short-sighted

The above argument can also be used to support the 'armed society is a polite society' viewpoint, in that would-be perpetrators who are planning and logically thinking about such acts, without being killed, would be deterred if they thought someone might be packing. However, the cost of this viewpoint is that when someone doesn't care about their survival, you now have multiple shooters with various amounts (or lack) of training shooting in a densely populated dark space. In this situation, friendly fire will happen, which is no less tragic than some nut shooting you.

If gun laws were much, much, much stricter and had been in place for a long time already, this kind of thing probably wouldn't have happened. I like to imagine that making guns illegal would, over time, slowly reduce the number of guns out there. Expecting Americans to hand them over as soon as a law is in place is not realistic, but to discover them and confiscate them would be a good start moving forward.

I'm surprised at the low level of intelligence of the people who support owning guns.
But then again we are talking about the USA.

- Please explain why there is a bigger % of gun crime in the USA than Holland.qTime

Just a couple clarifications, locust.
1) He obtained the explosives illegally, so he was a criminal at that point.
2) Assault rifles are defined by being fully-automatic weapons. He had an assault weapon. What is an assault weapon other than a politically-loaded term? In this case it's an AR-15 chambered in .223, which is a semi-automatic, scary-looking, less accurate version of this: http://www.gunlistings.org/ohio-…
3) The re-fire rate of the AR-15 and the Glocks he was carrying are identical.
4) The .40 rounds are far more lethal than the .223 rounds.
- my point about putting restrictions in place, while not a cure all, will reduce some amount of gun deathslocustsloth
- to say that it will have no effect is as foolish as saying it will solve the problemlocustsloth
- but thanks for your clarificationslocustsloth
- I've bought guns when there was a waiting period; I've bought them without. No sweat to me.melq
- The fact that everyone's worked up about the AR-15 and wants to go back to the AWB is silly to me, is all.melq

i think if you wanted a gun you could get a gun whether it's legal or not. people who go on shooting sprees aren't normal folk with licenses just sitting around with their guns one day thinking "what to do today... oh i know, kill people", they're crazy fucks who amass guns for a purpose, because they're crazy.
- Please explain why there is a bigger % of gun crime in the USA than Holland.qTime
- but what do i knowscarabin
- because pot is legal in holland?scarabin
- We dont know, all we know is most gun crimes in the US are not with registered weapons.CygnusZero4
- Maybe people in Holland are just calmer, but this sure as hell has nothing to do with laws.CygnusZero4
- If you want to kill people, a gun law will not stop you from getting guns.CygnusZero4

I think we need to separate the shooting spree people (crazy and will find a way to kill regardless) with the more random gun violence... petty robbers who end up killing, road rage gone bad, domestic situations, suicide, accidents, etc.
Laws won't fix the crazy, but they would fix, or severely hinder, a lot of the other cases. These are generally more common.
- <locustsloth
- Suicide and accidents can't be regulated away.melq
- i_monk0
^ Laws won't fix the crazy, but the right laws would make it easier to catch them in the planning stages.
Gun nuts disingenuously assert gun laws can only take the form of "nobody can own guns!!!!!" but that's patently false. Licensing, ammo restrictions, background checks, storage/transport requirements, et cetera et cetera, make spree killing harder and create speed bumps and red tape ideal for alerting authorities when someone is fixin' to do some spree killing. Someone intent on killing would either have to find another way, or meticulously plan it out months or years ahead (and maybe have to commit other crimes just to make their planned one possible).

Obvious statement of the day: This is a complicated issue
There are many other factors involved in between amount of restriction and amount of gun deaths.
Case in point:
My state has no permit process, no gun registration and individuals are not restricted from carrying (open or concealed) anywhere other than federal buildings and school areas. Arguably one of the least restrictive states in the union
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun…But we are 34th in gun deaths.
http://www.statemaster.com/graph…Were there a sole and direct correlation between amount of restriction and amount of deaths, there would be more gun deaths here than in most other states.
- you have a tiny population for the entire state. mostly rural and high from BC bud. ya'll are okay.robotron3k
- Exactly. And Wash D.C., way at the top of the list used to be WAY worse. During its strictest gun laws, of course.melq

I think the NRA remaining silent is going to hurt them. They are unable to police the crazies and unfortunately this shite is gonna happen again and be bigger than the last. Lot's of the arguments by gun lovers, "I could have stopped him if I had a gun" are old and tired. There has never been an NRA member that has saved anyone from a mass shooter so they have no argument.
- Not only that but it could get worse if the "hero" misses and hits innocent peopleGlitterati_Duane

Very simple.
Most of developed word - very strict gun laws - low level of gun crime.
USA - promotes buying guns - high level of gun crime.- not to mention glorifying and virtually training soldiers through entertainment mediamonospaced

the only industrialized country death penalty (+ mini-dictatorship Belarus)
my heart clenches into a pea every time I read about mexican beheadings -- not from the horror, but from the happy thought that someday it will come to america.
together with hand amputation for thievery in the name of god, bloodletting as cure for all diseases, and millions , millions -- as far as the eye can see -- of middle aged farmers and their mexican slaves. America shall inevitably return to the natives
