    well, did anything exciting happen?

    • Well...Tim & Co managed to mention the words: "innovative, remarkable, amazing, excited, first time ever, reimagined, sleek, game changing" in the first 30 minsutopian

First M1 benchmarks are IN and yeah, it crushes everything.

    https://www.macrumors.com/2020/1…

    Macbook Air 2020 with M1:

    - single core - beats everything
    - multi-core - only the top Xeons are a bit better

I expect the new Macbook Pro to crush everything at multi-core.
And this is only the first generation...

Intel/AMD are done (I mean by the time they scramble to get something new this time next year Apple will already be at M2 and so on)

    • If you see a speed comparison tool that would let me compare a 2017 3.8 Ghz iMac to a Mac mini, I would love to see those numbers.mg33
    • ^there's this info https://browser.geek…grafician
    • so similar for a Mac Minigrafician
    • Guess I'll be passing on Macs going forward as bootcamp will not be supported :/SteveJobs
    • oh and this M1 is actually a more of 4-core processor, as it has 4 "full" cores and 4 secondary, so yeah, impressive performance!grafician
    • And it's not just speed, it's speed vs power consumption. Better battery life with these numbers is really something.evilpeacock
    • Still gonna be at least 3 years before I switch - rosetta is not a realistic solution for audio software - and porting is not as simple as apple suggest...kingsteven
    • also there's going to be a big redesign of laptops and iMacs in the next year then things will start to get interesting along with USB4 hardware, GPGPU etc.kingsteven

"Affinity 1.8.6: ready to go on Apple’s new macOS Big Sur and primed to deliver superfast performance on Macs with M1 chips"

    https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb…

"Our developers were lucky enough to receive the DTK from Apple so we could prime all our apps for M1 before launch and get them up and running natively on the new hardware, making Affinity apps the first professional creative applications to offer native M1 support."

"To sum it up, M1 makes our apps run faster, smoother and feel more responsive than ever before (we’ve already even seen speed increases of over 3x faster running on the new MacBook Air). It’s definitely a big step forward for Mac, and we can’t wait to see how the rest of the Mac range develops with Apple silicon in the future."

3x faster?! Affinity already runs super fast now, imagine the speed increase next year when new Macbook Pros and iMacs will use these new processors!

    Adobe bye!

I read earlier that the estimated cost of this new M1 chip to Apple is $65, compared to $300 outlay for Intel. That in and of itself is a huge win for Apple, although I doubt they'll pass on much if any f that saving to consumers. I mean, if their boasts are true, why should they?

These mobile-led SoCs will become the new computer baseline 'computer' for consumers. The desktop PC you're using now is a dinosaur.

It'll be interesting to see what the competition come out with and how we'll be building computers in a few years - basically, they'll be small control modules a la Raspberry Pi's on steroids, coupled with bulky peripherals.

    • The fact that they're rumoured to be creating a Mac Pro with 1/2 the form factor speaks volumes to the size, power and general energy consumption.ideaist
    • SoCs-> HC.sted
    • (like c64, aminga etc :)sted
    • Aye - you ordered your Raspberry Pi 400 yet, then? :)Nairn
    • think of the R&D costs that have gone into that though. Not saying they can't afford it, but probably cheaper Mac's eventually?Ianbolton
    • For sure, but I imagine much of that R&D cost was absorbed by a decade-plus of casholla iPhone and iPad development.Nairn
    • I can't find it now, but there was a concept from HP years ago about integrating cpu memory and storage - not sure what happened to it. Yet here it is.Nairn
    • Cost is also in the manufacturing facilities, not just the R&D. Going in house is a big expense in itself.monospaced

My iPhone 12 Pro arrived yesterday, and I put it through a couple of test shots from my balcony this afternoon. Gotta say, the 12 Pro's camera array is vastly superior to my XS's.

Here's an OOC shot from today, no processing in LR (other than lens correction — which Adobe hasn't updated, so I had to use the 11 Pro's lens profile). First thing I noticed is that the 12 Pro's shots are lot cleaner. The XS's shots always had this weird mottling/textural artefacting.

I'm also liking the colours and dynamic range (HDR is turned off in this shot). Going to need to play around to figure out how to get the cleanest shots possible, but I'm liking what I see, so far.

    • 12pro imag generally over sharp with too strong highlights. UW lens is still soft and indoor shots have a magenta cast. Better than the XS though, certainly.craigatkinson

  • Continuity2

Well, I've got Big Sur installed on my mid-2014 MBP. I definitely don't hate it. Yeah, the icons will take a bit of getting used to, but really not, actually ... I do like that it's all the same across the board from Mac OS to iOS.

Liking the notification centre, too, I was never a big fan of this slide-out thingy.

Liking the subtle layout tweaks in the Finder window, Mail, iTunes (sorry, Music), etc ... everything feels like it's got a bit more room to breath.

    Is nice.

Now, it remains to be seen how CC 2021 performs on it. My old Intuos 4 does without needing a new driver, though, so that's a big plus.

    0. Remember this when apps won't start
    1. Disconnect network
    2. Open Terminal
    3. Run "sudo vi /etc/hosts"
    4. Type "G$" (goto end of file)
    5. Type "i", left arrow, enter
    6. Type `127.0.0.1 http://oscp.apple.com`
    7. Press esc then type ":x" then press enter
    8. Reconnect network or Restart

after 5 years upgraded to a new phone. Got the mini... funny, it doesnt feel mini at all. Though doubt we'll ever get a tiny 'nano' phone considering the amount of tech packed into these fuckers.

Is pretty amazing getting such a leap. Was worth waiting. Shit looks and feels futuristic.

After the Big Sur setup fiasco, also know this:

    https://sneak.berlin/20201112/yo…

"This means that Apple knows when you’re at home. When you’re at work. What apps you open there, and how often. They know when you open Premiere over at a friend’s house on their Wi-Fi, and they know when you open Tor Browser in a hotel.”

"If Apple truly cares about user privacy, they should be looking long and hard at every single packet that comes out of a mac on a fresh install before they release a new OS. We are. The longer that they don’t, the less credible their claims about respecting user privacy will become."

since Catalina it seems, they practically log everything you open and send the logs over network to apple servers not encrypted, in the open...
