I think the next thing that Apple needs to do is go all-in on a recycling program.

The more they focus on SoCs, the less material they'll use overall, but the harder it'll become to make use of those resources, once they've come to the end of their life.

I know they've dabbled, but if I was going to guess, I'd suggest Apple will (should) be the first to try for a 99% cradle to grave product.

    Tech needs it.

    • I think in 15-20 years we'll have oodles of ML and Database-guided robots stripping apart old tech to reclaim resources.
We should be doing this now.

Bought new iPhone SE from Apple in Aug 2020.

Today, five months later, the following things happen:

    - notification that Apple can’t determine if a genuine battery is installed

    - battery indicator stuck at less than 5%

    - phone shuts down repeatedly and often

So either Apple has a bug in the software or apple is selling phones from their US site that have either

    a) defective batteries, or
    b) non-genuine parts

After two hours of debating with Apple Support via chat, this is the best I get from them:

Since all their techs are booked (indefinitely) except for some small town over 100 miles away, they have agreed to replace it by mail.

However, if they decide later that it wasn't defective, I'll be charged the full price of a new phone. In the meantime, they're holding that money.

After agreeing to this and entering my credit card information I get all the confirmation emails.

Ten minutes later, an email informing me I'll be charged $29 for this service. At no point earlier did anyone mention this fee.

I'll be waiting until after I have it all sorted out and then calling my credit card company to reverse the $29. Fuck that bullshit.

    • Seriously this is really shitty service. Can not return defective product so have to pay money to let them decide if they will replace it.nb

Apple has repeatedly been accused of benefiting from forced labor in China, and the company is said to have lobbied US lawmakers to weaken a bill intended to ban US companies from relying on Chinese forced labor.

A major Apple supplier is reportedly using forced labor from thousands of Uighur workers to make glass for iPhones.

    • Apple launches major new Racial Equity and Justice Initiative projects to challenge systemic racism, advance racial equity nationwidested
  • sted1

Cupertino, California — Apple today announced a set of major new projects as part of its $100 million Racial Equity and Justice Initiative (REJI) to help dismantle systemic barriers to opportunity and combat injustices faced by communities of color. These forward-looking and comprehensive efforts include the Propel Center, a first-of-its-kind global innovation and learning hub for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); an Apple Developer Academy to support coding and tech education for students in Detroit; and venture capital funding for Black and Brown entrepreneurs. Together, Apple’s REJI commitments aim to expand opportunities for communities of color across the country and to help build the next generation of diverse leaders.
“We are all accountable to the urgent work of building a more just, more equitable world — and these new projects send a clear signal of Apple’s enduring commitment,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We’re launching REJI’s latest initiatives with partners across a broad range of industries and backgrounds — from students to teachers, developers to entrepreneurs, and community organizers to justice advocates — working together to empower communities that have borne the brunt of racism and discrimination for far too long. We are honored to help bring this vision to bear, and to match our words and actions to the values of equity and inclusion we have always prized at Apple.”

My new M1 Mini is brilliant. 16GB but super fast. It replaced my 2012 i7 MBP with 16GB. I can't believe the speed.
