I need a new phone. Is the iPhone 12 mini any good? Is anyone having it? I don't want a super big phone in my pocket and I have small hands.

Actually I'd like to keep my old iPhone SE (1st generation), but it only supports 3G and therefore doesn't work for me anymore.

    • Fuck me mate. If you've made it this far without 4G, keep the SE!Hayzilla
    • yes hold onto the se. i still have mine (tho s2), it's a decent size, not like the other proto-tablets out there.hans_glib
    • iPhone 13 mini probably being announced tomorrow. At least wait until then. The 12 price will drop and the 13 will be newnb
    • I have the iPhone SE2 (2020) and it’s great but the photo quality can be AWFUL. Worst camera quality I’ve seen in ten years.nb
    • I finally upgraded last year to the mini. Is great, no complaints.inteliboy
    • @Hayzilla It's still my 1st smartphone. Never owned another one. Haha. No internet on the go is a problem, though.SimonFFM
    • The wife has the 12 mini and loves it. I have the regular 12 and don't mind the scalemisterhow
    • If you don't care about the fancy cameras get the cheapest one that is available new.mekk

Apple issues urgent iPhone software update to address critical spyware vulnerability.

Apple has updated its software for iPhones to address a critical vulnerability that independent researchers say has been exploited by notorious surveillance software to spy on a Saudi activist.

Researchers from the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab said the software exploit has been in use since February and has been used to deploy Pegasus, the spyware made by Israeli firm NSO Group that has allegedly been used to surveil journalists and human rights advocates in multiple countries.

The urgent update that Apple (AAPL) released Monday plugs a hole in the iMessage software that allowed hackers to infiltrate a user's phone without the user clicking on any links, according to Citizen Lab. The Saudi activist chose to remain anonymous, Citizen Lab said.

    • insane, how does this work? they attach a pdf in the message and that's all it takes? no need too click and open?_niko
    • Presumably something opens it to do something like generate a preview.comicsans

Hopefully the new screen doesn't scratch as easily as the iPhone 12. Honestly, the 12 is the first and only phone I've ever had that got deep scratches on the screen, simply from sand in my pocket on a vacation. Never had so much as a tiny scratch on any previous version.

    • Can the new iPhone fold?utopian
    • Sand's not supposed to scratch your phone, maybe you had a dud? https://youtu.be/LP6…zarkonite
    • why, so you can show us how confused you are when you complain and point out they didn't invent folding phones?monospaced
    • i know you just want to bring home some vacation atmosphere but that's a weird thing to keep sand in your pocket.sted

all this brilliant technology, fancy innovation, beautiful materials, gorgeous colours and a notch. still with the mother-effing notch

    • Does the notch take up existing screen real estate, or just add more on to the top, around the sides? I assume the latter. If so, I think it's a neat compromiseNairn
    • it's all I can see lol https://i.gifer.com/…_niko

Wondering if someone can help me out here.

I have the apple subscription plan and get a new phone every year. I know the process for ordering a new phone.

My wife has a phone that isn't on the subscription plan but it's probably paid off now. I'm getting her on the subscription plan but wonder what we do with her old phone (iPhone 11). Can they be traded in towards the new phone like other Apple products?

    • You can trade it for a credit, but the older the device the less you'll get; Otherwise Apple recycles it.
      https://www.apple.co…
      evilpeacock
    • You should get more on Craigslist. Or are you too old for that shit? :)
It's still a perfectly good model btw.
      raf
    • That's the thing with iPhones now... I have a spare iPhone 7 on my desk, just updated it to iOS 15 (GM beta) and it's as good as new. Super snappy.raf
    • Thanks. I just can't figure out how to do a trade-in through the apple store app, in conjunction with joining the subscription plan.mg33
    • It makes sense that you can’t.nb
  • nb1

Is there any risk to choosing the Trade In option and then, when the new phone arrives, try to sell my phone on Craigslist for more than the trade in value. If it doesn’t sell, mail the trade?

    • You gotta pay for the balance before you trade in and/or you lose ay trade in credits.ArmandoEstrada
    • Yeah I know that. I don’t think you understand what I’m askingnb

Do you understand the choice of color options Apple gives for their phones? Are these modern colors?

    • Black, white, red, blue, green. All are traditional colors dating back thousands of years. ;)nb

Anyone here using Homepods for home theater with Dolby Atmos?

There are very few reviews of that mode, and they are inconsistent. I guess room acoustics play a huge part.

What in the crap is going on with the address bar now being at the bottom of the viewport on Safari iOS 15??
