Apple to scan U.S. iPhones for images of child sexual abuse

Apple unveiled plans to scan U.S. iPhones for images of child sexual abuse, drawing applause from child protection groups but raising concern among some security researchers that the system could be misused, including by governments looking to surveil their citizens.

    ^^^

This is coming to Macs with the next OS as well. So much for Apple's focus on privacy. This is clearly just the tip of the iceberg, and they're leading off with something that people will support without considering how the door is wide open for Apple, the government, or whoever to scan your devices for anything and everything.

Guess I need to do a deep dive on using Linux (which I'm using for most other things already) for audio production, because I'm done with Macs if this goes through.

I just read that Steve Jobs had the only kind of pancreatic cancer that is treatable and curable but he choosed alternative treatments instead of conventional up to date treatments.

"for nine months he refused to undergo surgery for his pancreatic cancer – a decision he later regretted as his health declined"

"Instead, he tried a vegan diet, acupuncture, herbal remedies, and other treatments he found online, and even consulted a psychic. He was also influenced by a doctor who ran a clinic that advised juice fasts, bowel cleansings and other unproven approaches, before finally having surgery in July 2004."

I didnt know that... Sad, he would still be alive probably.

With a dead hard drive (just days before retirement!) my trade-in is worth nothing, which is kind of surprising. I figured for an obsolete model the aluminum body and screen might be worth more than a functioning hard drive. Repairing/replacing will cost more than the trade-in value, and with no affordable way to reach the disk to ensure it's wiped clean, I guess it's going in the closet for now.

The Mini and a 32" LG monitor come sometime tomorrow. But with my luck who knows..

(And the Apple tech asked if I'd just updated the iMac, so they must know this is happening to older models.)

According to a recent report out of China, as long as you change the location to France, the performance of its phones will become faster and smoother. The reason for the smoothness is that Apple has been fined by France for the frequency reduction incident. This means that the company can not temper the performance of old iPhones in the country.

    • What does that mean? No location services? Wrong time zone? Blocked content in your actual country?_niko

Apple delays plan to scan iPhones for child abuse.

Apple has delayed plans to roll out detection technology which would have scanned US users' iPhones in search of child sexual abuse material.
It follows widespread criticism from privacy groups and others, worried that the on-device tracking set a dangerous precedent.
Apple said that it had listened to the negative feedback and was reconsidering.

There were concerns the system could be abused by authoritarian states.

The so-called NeuralHash technology would have scanned images just before they are uploaded to iCloud Photos. Then it would have matched them against known child sexual abuse material on a database maintained by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

    • It was NEVER going to scan iPhones. It was going to scan iCloud where people upload photos.monospaced
    • ^^^ iCloud already scans. This was about installing scanning software directly on devices. So, yes, it was absolutely designed to scan an iPhone.section_014
