I have been in the market for a new computer for about a year now. I am currently running a 2012 Mac Mini and was looking forward to the new Macbook Pro's.But, they are exceeding my budget and with no new Mac Mini on the current horizon, unless someone knows something I don't, I am looking into the PC realm.
Here is my main concern, and maybe you guys/gals can help:
Will fonts carry over? I have had issues with some production firms using my files because they use PC's. There is no way I want to replace all my fonts. My dev friends all swear that PC is the way to go now... thoughts?
- that depends on your font files. OSX is supposed to use Open Type fonts, but you might have legacy font files... maybe test it on a friend's computer if youzarkonite
- can't tell the difference by looking at your font files.zarkonite
- Fonts will absolutely carry over. Those problems were problem user problems that they attributed to your fonts. Fonts haven't been an actual issue for 20 years.section_014
- thanks for the infoKnuckleberry
- True that fonts shouldn't matter, but I actually know designers that still hoard OS-specific Type-1 fonts and never upgrade them.evilpeacock
- ^ I fear I may be one of those people... without knowing thoughKnuckleberry
- yeah - postscript fonts and shit like that WON'T work on PC (to my chagrin). OTF/TTF and naything comparatively contemporary will though.detritus

If you have a Mac but want to experience the ultimate laptop with on-screen touch, Surface and Microsoft Store are here for you. Starting today, anyone in the U.S. can trade in their MacBook Pro or MacBook Air at a Microsoft Store or online for up to $650 off a Surface Book or Surface Pro.

More great news:
Phil Schiller says more than 16GB of RAM means worse battery life, one guy emailed him and he got that reply. You can configure a Dell Precision 7000 with up to 64GB of RAM.
http://www.macrumors.com/2016/10…
The 13inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has 2 thunderbolts gimped (reduced PCI express bandwidth), only 2 of 4 work at full speed. This doesn't happen on the same 13 inch model without the Touch Bar:

Apple is out of the stand alone display business according to Nilay Patel:
- strange decisions going on at Apple, seems like it's all backwardsformed
- battery life is a factor then********
- less speed means more time working.moldero
- wasn't "battery life" why they took the headphone out?formed
- macbook pros have standard headphone connectorernexbcn
- Phil is a fanny that would tell you up is down. That pesky RAM sucking all the power. Not the rinky-dink extra display panel, oh no.face_melter
- on the iphone, removed for battery spaceformed
- They removed the headphone jack to create more space for their new taptic engine.face_melter

Apple wants to simplify shortcuts.

Apple makes people dumb.
For example I had to tell my girl to stop whining because with the new ios she can't copy parts of text messages anymore. And instead of thinking she started to bitch-out. The solution is that you paste the fucking text to a new message and start editing there, cut-copy-paste problem solved stfu.
I feel this shit all the time in the office where 8 of the 10 people are using a mac and they sometimes don't even understand the basics of the device they use. They can't copy a file without mouse, or trackpad, can't use command line, and if something isn't working the way they expect it's always someone ease's fault.- the concept of intuitive interfaces is that it IS supposed to work the way the user expects it.********
- that's what bothers me about software written for windows is their lack of thoughtfulness in designing software.********
- that's okay i'm not against this, but please just learn some basic stuff. like you don't have to copy and delete a file to move it to an other directory...sted
- because there is a move command for that...sted
- disk not directory.sted
- haha. like move=autocopy. that's definitely wizard level for the person who only understands scrapbooking.********
- and the joke is that she is using illustrator in a level i would never understandsted
- haha********
- How is one supposed to simply intuit so many levels of abstract complexity? All good tools require a learning curve. Monkey see, monkey do.detritus
- Your gf is right. You should be able to select the five words you want instead of having to delete the 25 you don't.i_monk

Man everything we wanted was the rMBP with new CPUs, 32GB RAM and 17" screen. And a proper GPU option, like a 1080m.
Wasn't that hard to miss.
- You want a 17" laptop screen? That is ridiculous.nb
- http://www.yourinsur…nb
- nb, yes 17. you know, like they did in the past: http://origin.arstec…mekk
- I remember.nb
- Generally 17" laptops don't sell well, so that's why there aren't as many of these on the market.evilpeacock
- 17" is a dinosaur. Too big, too heavy and just simply too obnoxious to bring anywhere public to work on.lvl_13
- when using a screen with really thin bezels a 17" would be just a little bigger than the current 15" 2016 15" is incredibly light, I could carry a 17" then..mekk
- Simply ridiculous. I take my 17 everywhere with no issues. Never feels too big for the occasion. Maybe a plane, but I would just use my iPad on a plane...sofakingback
- sofakingback has had it with his motherfucking 17" on this motherfucking planemekk

I started this thread 4 years ago. What Apple have going for them now is great customer service. A bit of contemporary folk music, some misty pastel colours, thinner lighter brighter faster and less, every time.
I got the Google Pixel — fantastic. Looking to try something other than Apple for my laptop now...No idea what.
Dell XPS?
- Dude! You got a dell?lvl_13
- no, just looking whats around! Surface / book looks good alsocraigatkinson
- great work on starting such a great threadIanbolton
- imagine the pridecraigatkinson
- I'm getting the pixel next month. Tell me more about it.fadein11
- what do you need to know?craigatkinson
- what do you love about it? I have read the reviews etc. but what makes you think its great? always good to get real user feedback.fadein11
- well I've used apple since 1997 and iphone since the start. Coming from that it feels more open, and its integration with chrome, spotify and other progs iscraigatkinson
- excellent, seems better than ios/os. Also google is smart, some people wont like it but I like the way it knows what you're about to do, and tells you things.craigatkinson
- oh sorry I should have said I am an Android user from the start - of course you will like it compared to ios - its way ahead. I was more interested in thatfadein11
- model of phone - i.e. hardware. The Android experience will be better than any other on an actual google phone. but what about battery / cam etc?fadein11
- camera is great, dynamic range is outstanding. Battery is beyond other phones I've used. Easy to get a day and a half normal use.craigatkinson

My late 2012 MacBook Pro with 16gb of RAM, 2tb SSD is still running well. Probably more powerful too. I can also still remove the super drive and install an additional SSD. It was the last MacBook that felt customizable.

Apple's MacBook Pro will use a proprietary SSD, preventing Mac users from upgrading their storage solution themselves using standard parts. The SSD uses a unique mounting solution and a proprietary interface and it's an NVMe SSD which uses an Apple-designed SSD controller, the SSD is secured inside the system using some strong tape, making the SSD difficult to remove.
- lol, yup, keep eeking out those last pennies, maybe you'll get lucky and they'll bundle a new SSD with a package of dongles!formed
- For. Fuck's. Sake.face_melter
- Tape.ETM
- Most PCI-based SSDs never get upgraded from all the laptops I've seen.evilpeacock
- Whether upgraded or simply replaced, back to the crap, proprietary have to buy directly from Apple BS.ETM
- Any details on the read/write speeds of these SSDs? I'm glad my 2011 MBP is still in perfect shape. 1TB SSD with 500+ R/W speeds.mg33
- <<< same here. My 2011 is pretty well sorted!sofakingback

They dropped the startup chime on the new MacBooks. smh

''Stop Using iCloud''
- Kinda misleading, but sort of true — though this applies to pretty much any online service if you don't keep a localized cached copy of your data somewhere.evilpeacock
- Physical and cloud backups 4 life. Before cloud, I would use a backup drive and a CD/DVD backup. Sooo many cd's.section_014
- Apple's services have always been gash though. MobileMe was liquid shit, piped directly into your computer.face_melter

Some info on the performance of the new MBP, since a lot of "armchair critics" are a bit too anti-Radeon; Yes, NVidia trumps all for raw speed but all reports cite Polaris Radeons as radically better than previous gen Radeons and the new chipset excels at battery life.

External Video Cards! Ok well this kinda changes things for me. I wonder if apple will release something like this.
