The future of the smartphone is biometrics & animated feces starting at $1000.
- I caught some of Ars' blog with the face capture stuff. Yo, fuck *that* for a game of soldiers. I'll stick with my 7 for the foreseeable future.face_melter
- So you mean until it's updated and slow?mekk

that gap at the top! You'd just level it wouldn't you? Looks shit. 'We cut the top off everything on your screen because we couldn't find another way of doing it'.
An animated panda ffs, deep pixels...I think they've just run out of things to invent or follow. Utter shite and a stupid price to make people think it must be good. Load of people running to A&E because they had an extra beat...brilliant Apple, well done.

I'm glad the new Apple TV is 4K and supports both major HDR formats, and its price is unchanged. Makes me consider buying a 4K HDR TV for the first time.
- that was the most exciting new product. Except I won't buy a new apple TV until the one I have dies.dopepope
- It's one of heir best products in my opinion. Does what it's supposed to and more. Not pretentious.monospaced

I'll probably upgrade from my 6+ to an 8+... but not touching that X till the next generation IF it's become their new standard (I could see it not doing so well). All that facial recognition bullshit is useless to the consumer outside of turning your shit emoji into an animated version of you... to be honest I don't want any device ever recognizing me just cuz I walked in the room... kinda scary.
- ********3
- hehe :)PonyBoy
- you can call the police without unlocking the phonemonospaced
- but would the police recognize you?********
- Its just like when the touch ID doesnt work. You'll just have to enter your passcode.err
- Or just tell Siri to call the police. It does it automatically.monospaced
- FFS. Right. What if you had your face caved in, your mouth sewn shut, and your fingers hacked off?face_melter
- At that point you get an android device I suppose.monospaced

I was intrigued by the X until I saw that the dimensions are larger than a Plus.
Nope.
- no they're not... it's smaller than any iphone + modelPonyBoy
- 8+: https://i.imgur.com/…
X: https://i.imgur.com/…PonyBoy - I actually think they got the size of the X rightPonyBoy
- Ok. I stand corrected. It was the screen dimensions that threw me, but I see they're doing this with a slimmer bezel.mg33

If this was the new google pixel, nerds would be foaming at the mouth with praise.
- the old google pixel is still more advancedcraigatkinson
- My pixel detects that it's still on me when I put it away and doesn't lock. All this face rec crap is useless and bad UX.zarkonite
- Apple's processors however are where the real tech is, their engineers are going great work... the designers have lost their mind trying to come up with thezarkonite
- next big thing all the time IMHO.zarkonite
- ^ case in pointinteliboy
- My pixel is greatcraigatkinson
- I thought all the tech was intel? Surely that means everyone can get the same chips etc.Hayzilla
- nah, Apple makes their own chip designs.zarkonite

In regards of the face recognition scam, here's my experience with it. Like 6 years ago, my buddy bought a windows based netbook that thad this exact feature. You could insert a password or just look at the camera and the computer will unlock itself.
So he brought it to my place and he was showing me how it worked, I tried getting in front of the camera and fair enough, didn't worked.
Out of curiosity I said let me try something. I opened facebook on my phone, I searched for his name. I picked one of the photos where he was looking dead front to the camera.
I zoomed on his face and placed my phone in front of the camera. It worked.
I was able to unlock his computer with absolutely no passwords, it was hilarious. This camera thing is the lamest way to secure your phone, probably ever.
- This is a different tech that scans in 3D space, it's a hell of a lot more sophisticated than just colour recognition.zarkonite
- time will tell. Hopefully they fixed the 2d recodnitiondbloc
- yeah I wouldn't put my money on an Apple feature V1 =)zarkonite
- you could just cut someone's face off and use that to get into their phone. so easy.sarahfailin
- or just kill them, that would be easierformed
- Apple wouldn't allow that nonsense they're very serious about not letting that kind of thing happen. Same with their fingerprint thing. None were leaked ever.monospaced
- lol sarahfallinMiguex
- It would not have stopped Nicholas Cage in Face/Off.yuekit
- Mono:I love how you say that as if you can personally assure everyone of Apples integrity."Trust me fellas, I give you my word, no such BS will come before you"sofakingback
- lol. Mr. Know-it-all over here.
*mono nuke, in 5, 4, 3, 2....sofakingback - Great story BTW Miguel, only you would be so clever. amazing.sofakingback
- lol @ sofa, I love how you can personally assure everyone of Apple's corruption. I'm not a "know it all" but I do base my statements on what's actually happeninmonospaced
- They are "late" to the tech because they wanted to avoid exactly these issues. They wouldn't come to market unless they had avoided them.monospaced
- And just like the fingerprint encoding, none of it is accessible by the NSA or hackable by any of the methods outlined here. That has been proven time and againmonospaced
- At least, I mean, it hasn't been shown to be. Of COURSE I can't say for sure. Nobody can.monospaced
- hmmm... normally I would agree, but Apple hasn't exactly been at the top of their game for the past couple years. I guess, it just feels unsafe for now.sofakingback
- Also, I didn't say they were corrupt. I didn't claim anything. I was just calling you out. thats all. troll level 2. maybe 3. Light braise, thats all.sofakingback
- But your assumption is telling ;)sofakingback

"Consider the "taking it out of your pocket" use case: If you're good, you'll stick your hand in your pocket and grip the phone so your finger lands on the fingerprint reader. Touch ID works as both an "on" button and an "authentication" button. In one touch, you've turned on the phone and logged in. You haven't even fully taken the phone out of your pocket yet, and it's already on and unlocked. By the time you bring the phone to your face, the unlock process is finished and you're looking at the home screen.
To use the iPhone X's Face ID, you have take the phone out of your pocket, lift it up to your face, swipe up to turn it on, and only then can can you start the unlock process. The difference is probably one or two seconds, but for something you do 80 times a day, having the fastest possible unlock system really matters."
- what person is able to unlock the phone in their pocket, lets not go exaggerate here hahaMiguex
- err, everyone? you put your finger on the sensor and it unlocks. This new UX adds 2 steps and a new delay to the process.zarkonite
- maybe you're thinking of the old phones where you had to swipe the screen?zarkonite
- no, I have that touch system on my phone as well. I guess if you really practice it can be done. but lets face it, majority of people don't.Miguex
- it's better than the face recognition thing though, for sure. Let's just leave the hype out for objectiveness sakeMiguex
- am I the only one that thinks that this face thing is interesting? I never liked Touch ID - especially at the gym or when cooking.inteliboy
- The fave thing is interesting. But not so much for what they're using it for right now. I can see it evolving into something coolmonNom
- Face unlocking is a little awkward especially in public, makes you look like you are taking a selfie.yuekit
- The Apple Pay setup is going to be incredibly awkward. Now you just hold your phone, with X you're going to have position yourself correctly, swipe, tap.face_melter
- Unless the tech is incredibly on point it's going to cause fuck ups when people are at the checkout.face_melter
- If they hadn't taken away the touch ID it would be a nice secondary option.zarkonite
- You don't have to swipe to activate it. It turns on when it detects the movement when you pull it out of your pocket. Like the other iPhones do.mekk
- Feeling around in your pocket to hold it by the home button to save time? Never done by anyone ever.Hayzilla
- Yeah, that's silly. I have the 7 and can't do that unless I'm actively trying in slow motion.fyoucher1
- Ya... I don't reach for my phone by holding it on the home button...ever...pango
