@JAYLARSON
do you ever use those red filters for your black and white photography?
- jaylarson0
i've thought about it, it sounds like the blacks would be even more rich. but i actually stick with silverefex pro and some custom presets in lightroom that i adjust.

just make sure you don't shoot against a white background or Amazon will sue your ass:

Reading some comparison reviews would serve you better than asking here (my guess). Image size and lenses are going to be your biggest concerns.
I've though about ditching my D800 for something smaller, but tough thinking of giving up all those pixels (the Sony A7r looks pretty sweet, but the lenses are going to weigh close to what the Nikkors do).
Fuji's line is pretty nice, though. I'd go for the XT-1, personally.

@pinkfloyd
imo that is not a good trade off. you should be looking at the xt-1 not the x-e1 or x-e2.
Now another thing is you are going from Full Frame to cropped sensors.
The IQ of the XT-1 I believe is better than the 5DMK2 and at par with the 5DMK3.
You will have other issues to consider though like, a Huge loss in battery life and a small selection of quality lenses at high price!
when you say portability do you mean it's too heavy or too bulky for packing? what lens are you walking around with?
I am looking for a used 5dmk2 right now so let me know if you still decicde to sell.

I still don't quite get the Sony A7r lens lineup. How many actual lenses does Sony make for it? Are you expected to purchase lens adapters to use other brands?
- formed0
They are making lenses for it and have a list of ones coming out. Right now, there is nothing fast enough for me, but the glass is quality (Zeiss).
The problem, so I am told, is that the A7 is full frame. This necessitates larger glass to cover the sensor (larger than a micro 4/3 sensor), which is heavier. So the body is super light, but the glass will be heavy (that's an assumption as there isn't much out yet).
The adapter is supposed to work great, but is expensive ($400 I think). But if you already have good glass, it can help with the transition. For me, my D800 is hard to complain about, so until I see the glass for the A7 I'll wait.
Also, there's no reason that a M4/3 can't have 36mb and be a crop sensor, which would be fine with me.

I agree with @formed.
I've been seriously considering selling my D800 and all my Nikon glass for the Sony A7R. It's a tempting camera, obviously because of the size, which would be a huge benefit for me, I travel a lot. But I still need it to perform in a work environment.
Looking at the lens offerings from Sony (and all the 3rd party adapters) I think I'll stick with Nikon. The Sony lenses are huge, heavy, and expensive. Not much point in a small camera body if the lens if going to be massive. This depends on the types of lenses you like, but I like prime lenses, and my Nikon 35mm F2 was less than $300 and is amazing. Of course the 50mm 1.8 is a cheap gem. I have a few other primes, all of which are small and light, and fast and sharp.
The adapters for the A7r are cool, but there seems to be slow focusing issues and all the other stuff to worry about. So, for now, it's Nikon.
- Unfortunately for me I do do some type of sports fast fps photography quite often so the Sony system is still a no goHijoDMaite
- I talked to a guy that was using a A7r and Nikkor 85 1.4 and loved it, but he didn't mentions focusing (and worked at the shop)formed

This is a great article which will talk about IQ comparisons between 5dMK3 and Fuji XT-1 using pro lense for both.

Canon 85 F1.2 @ F1.8

Look, here's the thing. When it comes to technical image quality (resolution, dynamic range, etc) don't waste your time pouring over all the data. If you're straining your eyes trying to compare 5Dm3, D800, XT-1, A7r, etc, etc, you're just wasting time. They all look amazing. No one will EVER notice any difference.
Most of the world's famous photographers all used cameras that were shittier than these at some point and made amazing images on them.
Pay more attention to how you like the camera design, how it feels in your hand, how much you like the focusing system, the controls, and think about the type of photography you do. Fast AF is important for some people, but tons of people still use MF. Think about how it will suit YOU, and know that you can always just sell your fancy camera and buy some other fancy camera if you don't like it.
Best advice: if you live in a city that rents these, rent the one you think you want for a weekend. See how it goes.
But as far as resolution, dynamic range, and all that, just let it go. They're all the top of the line, and will produce extremely similar results.

Can I get a crit on my photos?

I've really been debating my next upgrade. I've had a D90 for five years, taken great pictures with it. Wanted to step up to a full frame camera and decided on the D600, then the D610 once the prices started going down. Planned on keeping my 50mm 1.8 and getting a 22 or 24mm 2.8 initially, then later maybe getting a 70 - 200 or 300 VR.
But then a friend started raving about the XT1, and how great it has been instead of his heavier Nikon gear. Camera looks intriguing; I just need to weight the pros/cons of both and the limitations of the XT1 compared to the D610.
