At no point did I get the sense that anyone was arguing that the entire planet was completely submerged, as per the Bible, and that moses and fam led the way to salvation -- especially not Set.
Only that all major cultures have flood myths as part of their history and the evidence of massive floods is pretty clearly established in the fossil and geographic record.
Maybe there one massive calamity (a la comet/tsunami), or possibly a series of semi-connected disasters related to ice-age melt that was the basis for all those varied histories. I have my preferred theory, but there is no question that massive floods did occur
When your gaze only extends to the next hilltop or horizon and your knowledge of the rest of the world is just as limited; is it really surprising that an observer would declare that "the world is flooding!" when in reality, it is merely his local area?

This one will probably have me laughed at but I have been slowly going throuigh this book (due to time) but I like his approach in the first chapter about why we cant accept new ideas.
This all be right or wrong (I still feel we would benefit from this mind set change).
