I see lots of people saying China didn’t actually beat the virus and it’s all a big cover up. I guess anything is possible but it does raise the question...if China couldn’t do it after months of extreme lockdowns, surveillance etc how are other countries hoping to with the half-hearted measures they are putting in place?
- I think, we need to figure it out. lockdowns and isolations buy us time. an approved vaccine (maybe a year away) is what is needed.uan
- uan you are in Switzerland? How are things there?yuekit
- curve looks like flattening (at least we think it’s showing progress) after 2weeks of lockdownuan
- we still have till 19th april to avoid as much contact to others as possible. but will have to be extended eventually.uan
- prognostics from the weekend: best case 1000 deaths (for 8mio population), worst case 100000 deaths. reality will be somewhere around 22000 fatalities.uan
- and this might be of interest for other countries: this is the first wave. they expect a second one in october/nov.uan
- Ha. Real discussion.********

how long do we have to wait for someone to throw a shoe, or two, at this shitbag?

"While 100,000 is a horrible number, if the U.S. can keep its death toll to "100,000, so we have between 100,000 and 200,000, we altogether have done a very good job." - Trump

8 strains of the coronavirus are circling the globe. Here's what clues they're giving scientists.
At least eight strains of the coronavirus are making their way around the globe, creating a trail of death and disease that scientists are tracking by their genetic footprints.
While much is unknown, hidden in the virus's unique microscopic fragments are clues to the origins of its original strain, how it behaves as it mutates and which strains are turning into conflagrations while others are dying out thanks to quarantine measures.
Huddled in once bustling and now almost empty labs, researchers who oversaw dozens of projects are instead focused on one goal: tracking the current strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that cause the illness COVID-19.
- While the maps are fun, they can also be “little dangerous” said Andersen. The trees showing the evolution of the virus are complex and it’s difficult even forkingsteven
- experts to draw conclusions from them." I've seen papers suggesting that interpreting them as trees is dangerous. the virus mutates back on itself creatingkingsteven
- loops: a network not a tree... a lot of the studies determining time scale and origin may be skewed because they use a tree like approachkingsteven

- These tools can't be part of our daily lives, because that will have far worse consequences than we're facing now.sted
- sted... you mentioned in another note that a ton of small n95's were still out there—any idea where to order? (my wife is on the frontlines—looking to buy some)PonyBoy
- I think the impoant message here is that masks protect others - we all have it ass-backwards in the west. China here implies that masks aren't the keyNairn
- I would say that those four states all exhibit social restraint that perhaps all the others do not so much.Nairn
- the red and blue lines look like a rude drawing.shapesalad
- looks like a data harvesting siteGardener
- you might be able to get some cycle pollution masks.shapesalad
- @PonyBoy sadly this information is based on various countries reporting about used/small/lowqualit... masks sent to them from korea and china.sted

david[at]l4io[dot]co...sted - coincident. ones with more social restrain wears mask when going out... sounds like oxymoron...pango
- I was a couple of teas too early to be responding when I did earlier - I meant 'social compliance' more than 'restraint'.Nairn
- i have a few N95 and i dont wear them. I havent reached that pranoia level yet.Bennn
- Masks train you not to touch your face. Actual virus transfer by air is exceedingly rare unless you are in a room with anwagshaft

- I've had this open in a browser tab for a couple of days now.. https://www.instruct…Nairn
- ..wondering how to simplify it/make it laser-ready. Main problem is - supply chain's shut down. Can't think how I'd get a hold of PET.Nairn
- Actually, main problem is how uttterly irrelevant I am and how i' dnot have a clue what to do with the masks/who to give thtm to after.Nairn
- First and foremost you have to understand demand details of the supply chain at your local area.
A people in this looking for PET/PVC materials at print shopssted - that's how low it goes at the most affected areas.sted

easy way to make your own protection...make multiple ones, so you can wash and let dry for several days before reusing them.
- posting this to encourage proactivity. don‘t buy masks as market is still struggling to provide enough masks for health workers. make your own.uan
- Disclaimer: These home-made masks have a 12-33% protection efficiency against Covid-19.sted
- I've been thinking to buy HEPA vacuum bags and play around with those, see if there's any way to make something neatNairn
- also behind ear straps don't work, just pull your ear, needs to go back of head to get the right tightnessshapesalad
- wearing a mask gives you a false sense of security, its a mental thingBennn
- See, you've got it exactly wrong, Bennn - the mask isn't for your benefit, it's for everyone else's. We don't have that culture in the West. Yet, anyway.Nairn
- If you want to protect yourself, you 'need' a full N95+ mask, face shield and protective clothing, which you burn when you get back home after every shop.Nairn
- That's what's always made me smirk when I see fearful people with shitty masks - if anything, all they're doing is concentrating nasties 5mm from their mouthNairn
- this corona thing is a learning process, masks are useful but only in combination with other measures, that are more important.uan

The coronavirus is the worst intelligence failure in US history
The Trump administration’s unprecedented indifference, even willful neglect, forced a catastrophic strategic surprise on to the American people
