http://www.canadianbusiness.com/…
as posted earlier, they expect to recoup their investment this year
in the black within 2 years? that sounds pretty successful to me.

almost too successful........

Ah, I stand corrected. And it looks like they have plenty of money to spend since they are already so entrenched in Canada.
- exador0
hey morphinelips..
long time no see...don't think i've seen your name on t his site in a while...anyhow...
Canadian Tire, is like, a total institution up here...
it's the kinda store your dad takes you too when you're a kid to pick out your first bike, while he's checking out the latest powertools and thinking about getting a new garden hose...
and when you get all old n' grown up, you take your kids there...sort of thing...
anyhow, there's bugger all crossover with amazon.com
they won't canabalize each other for customers...
pure brick n mortar old school...but...
this new online division?
it'll rake in the cash...
Canucks will use it.
FCBC
(for canucks, by canucks...)

ahh but as someone said earlier are they planning on recouping it in Canadian Tire dollars within 2 years?
- MrDinky0
wow .. you are so funny matt
hate to see something that actually makes money in the down turn of the market?
unlike amazon which too years and years to get back it ROI?

sad thing is:
we ain't learning shit from this....
we can almost conlcude that large companies with shitty lookin sites are successfull and those pushing the possibilities for excellent user-experience to the limits will have to fight their way up...
so long for my job then...
[insert irony]
- MrDinky0
its useless talk to you ppl
matt.. you just burned my bridge with your lack of busines sense
- unknown0
Do not take this shit too personally mr Winky.......it's all about the site...not you.
Let's get drunk soon, pal!
;-)
- MrDinky0
dude
i know its like that..
but like most designers, they dont get the trade offs...most bitch and complain about how they could do what they wanted to do cause they think its good.
anywho.. who cares.. time to go home and drink...
3cy, i am all for drinking and getting wasted....
woowoo

First of all, I've given up reading all the comments, there's too much catching up to do, but let me say this - Canadian Tire doesn't need a fancy front-end to sell to their customers. Read that sentence again, "to their customers". The people that are buying at Canadian Tire Online are people that are at the very least going to be very familiar with the Canadian Tire brand. The same people who have been getting the fliers in their mailbox their whole life. All they need is the logo, every damn Canadian recognizes it.
Amazon.com keeps getting mentioned. Sure, it's more attractive but we're talking about a company that does not have a pre-existing base of customers and have been trying to sell themselves to the masses for years now. Canadian Tire isn't exactly The Sharper Image, so why should they pretend to be?
In the end, I agree that it could look a hell of a lot better, but what does it matter what I think? I've bought, like, one thing from the brick/mortar store for a looong time.

phew... that is a hell of a lot of reading...
i want to get my two cents in.
i disagree with anyone who says "I" could have done it.
but I agree with everyone who says it could have been done better visually. i understand that research drove the product we see... seems to me it still violates some priniciples of design that have been researched for a couple hundred years.
lastly, i think its great that they shelled out 28 million. I'm sure a few people made a killing off the deal, but ultimately its good to see that sort of precedent being set (financially speaking).
back to reading...

but my "i could have done that" was a joke...
can't you see that?? oh well...
:)
So this thread finally came to an end?
