Ok so after much hard work, reserach and many questions asked i might actually get a good camcorder. It this point i'm set for PD150 as i did work with it in the past many times. Yet, Canon XL1 seems to be in the same price range.
Anyone out there who had experience with both types and woul recomend one over another?

well having used the PD.. i say is a really really nice cam. i like that it takes DV instead of mini.. and the lenses are really nice..
never really used the XL1 on the fiel.d.. just fuked around with it...
but i tell you this much.. everyone who uses the PD150.. gives it all the praise they can...
i shot my psa. wit it... wink wink..

Yeah i've worked with both, the PD150 is less ominus looking and more compact that the XL1S, that's if your interested in shooting at a more pedestrian level, the audio is top notch though and you have a fixed lens (but you can buy some decent adapter lens to have some variety) the XL1S is more expensive, interchangeable lens, more precarious to lug around and "pro" looking. hence the PD150 is a great second camera for a set to support an XL1S. Also, panasonic just came out with awesome camera, like a mix between the PD & XL, you must check out... also does super fast shutter speed like the style/effect you see on the beginning of "saving private ryan" and new CCD technology... it all depends on what you want, convienence or respect...
doh!

i'm working on independent shor feature right now and writing a script for another one (both are close to no-budget, but everyboud is still giving all they can into it). I'm using PD150 from school -- which is extreme pain in the ass as the tech guy is very uptite. With a friend we came up with $3000 so we can invest in our won camcorder. Now we need to get the best what we can get for our precious money.

Yes, i heard everyone praise PD150. Yet i'd like to know whether there are any benefits to XL1S ? I know that both cameras look "pro" so it could be dificoult for street filmmaking.

If you really want a killer camera that is within 3k, buy a Sony VX2000 it's a sweet deal and is about 1k less than you'll pay for and PD150

remember, once you get the camera, you'll want/need to buy additional accessories too, so it's always going to be more than you think...

If i might ask why is this camera so much cheaper? Is it because it's not as popular as pd150? Why? Moreover what kind of accesories are you talking about.
I know i'll need:
--3 hour batter (as the small one that comes with it isn't enough)
-- tripod (i'll use the one from school at the moment as they seem to be less strict about those)
-- Glidecam (we want smooth motion) and a cheap one comes at $300..I think that's it?

check out the Panasonic AG_DVX100
24fps progressive scan. lists $3795.
good review in the October2002 issue of Videography Magazine. I've heard alot of good stuff about the PD150. The XL1's changeable lenses are a huge asset though.Check the Videography mag web site. http:www.videography.com

I have used both and I love the XL1. I bought one for myself. I like the completely manual controls of the camera: shutter, aperature, lenses, audio, etc. I bought a dual-XLR adapter so i can use pro mics. The color rendition of the XL1 is nicer, in my opinion, than the pd150 or even the vx2000.. the sonys tend to accentuate the blue spectrum, which is more difficult to get rid of in post. Again, this is my opinion.
Also, frame mode on the xl1 is worth the price. I know others have it too, but it is perfect here.

I was going to recco the VX1000 cause i've heard some great things about that, but then i noticed the VX2000 which is brand new, the pd150 hasn't been updated in like 2-3 years also... here's the skinny
http://www.dvinfo.net/sony/skinn…
but the bottom line is some more features on the PD150, but for the cost you can work around that too with the VX2000, they are in essence the same camera - as for accessories, since they both have just one lens, you may want a wide angle attachment to create dif shots, those vary in price, and you will need a good bag for sure, and you may need at least 2 batteries and dv cassettes galore... and all dat stuff does cost a bit

me again
tech from school told me that VX2000 doesn't allow for audio gain control... If thta's so that would really suck.

yeah, i know what your saying, all those damn features or extra controls suddenly jump the cost of the camera up tremendiously, another suggestion, i have the newer model XL1S, but you should be able to pick up last years model the XL1 for a smokin deal on either Ebay or a reputable camera shop - and it probably comes with extra goodies like bag and etc...
get your wallet out and check this...

XL1s .. what creon said is right on the money.
The lenses alone make it the right choice. I love mine.
