like 4cy said, 18-24 are the bigger threat. putting 50+ types through license renewals tests is discrimination based on prejudice.
The real problem is the car-based suburban society we have, where independence means having a car. considering how many deaths are linked to car accidents, cars are just evil. too bad they're a necessary evil. seniors won't be stubbornly driving when they shouldn't if a car wasn't their lifeline.

anyway, that's a hell of a rep to get so late in life....he must've done something wrong

that is not true. the most accidents happen for 16-25 and elderly people over a certain age. they add a good percentage of accidents in there along with the young people. theyre reflexes arents as fast, as well as vision.
theres nothing more dangerous than an old person in the fast lane going 50 mph in LA. they'll eventually get rear ended and cause a pile up. I see it all the time. they also cause a lot of small car damage. hitting the corners of cars when they have to parrarel park (which you hav eto do often here) or just getting into a parking space. they seem to clip things a lot.
my step dad is nearing the age where we'll have to take his keys away. my sister doesnt allow my neices to drive with him because he is so jerky, agressive and he drives way too fast. he was a crazy driver when he was young, and now hes a crazy old driver who gets in way too many near misses. he doesnt want to admit hes losing it.

I'm one of the us-bashers, but I don't think this has anything to do with american culture. It is more about the post-modern society with people living their own lives and not caring for others. Something like this could just as well happen here in Europe.
My girl is actually a doctor so she has had to tell lots of people, sorry you can't drive no more. It is hard to do and it just could be that some unlucky family doctor is going to get the blame for this.
I just loved the remark:
he is just an old man, don't beat him up.
So basically if he had been a latino youngster he would have been killed right on the spot.

...and we can only hope the elderly immediate family to take the keys away...

That crash happened about two blocks north of the (mt) Media Temple office. I was actually at the Farmer's Market about 1/2 hour before the accident getting lunch. It was just complete mayhem here yesterday.
Still a little shaky...

LA seems to be subject to these karmic outbursts every so often. they should line that entire city with burgundy interior leather

He will be charged with manslaughter which is a felony.
Ouch, plus all those families will want to sue the shit out of his insurance company..

kpl... "putting 50+ types through license renewals tests is discrimination based on prejudice."
Sorta like car insurance, eh?
Seriously, what do you do to this old guy? Put him in prison?? Prison is supposed to be for rehabilitation....
Do you think this guy ever wants to drive again?
- kpl0
well... insurance cos usually has better statistics to back up their idiocy.
house arrest for a year sounds fine. if he's remorseful, dude is probably in a deep depression by now and will croak in a few months so it's not like punishment is necessary.
- kpl0
prison is for punishment, deterrence, warehousing, and rehabilitation.
lately rehab is 4th on the list of priorities...seems like vengence for victims is all the fad now.
- mitsu0
soap on rope would probably sell well in prisons...

That was a cynical comment I made. I totally agree.
What an aweful accident.......
- 4cY0
well, shellie, maybe in your country..
Here by FAR most accidents are caused by youngsters.
and...
back in the days when i was a press-photographer, i made a portrait of a 96-yr. old driver who just got his license extended (!!!), and after the shoot we both had to leave in the same direction... and boy, this guy was fast and really smooth in taking the curves and such.
It took away my prejudice.
prejudice sux.

"Ouch, plus all those families will want to sue the shit out of his insurance company.. "
incredibly sad, but true.
fucking greedy amer...
eh, nevermind.
- k0na_an0k0
you can say it cY. we are a greedy bunch and it's sick. you read about it all the time in the paper or on the news. a womans child was running around a department store (on camera) and she trips over her own child and breaks her ankle. she sued the department store... and one.
it's terrible.
as for this old fellow i feel bad for both him and the families. jesus... just look at the picture they posted of him. damnit... i feel so bad for HIM. but on the other hand you can not NOT feel sorry for the families who have lost. what to do in a situation like this? who knows. jail will kill him (earlier than his old age will anyways) and getting off clean will kill the families who want a big payout for their loss. i.e. cash before forgiveness.
