'You ever notice people who believe in creationism look really unevolved? You know, eyes real close together, big furry hands...
"I believe God created me in one day"
"Hmm... looks like he rushed it" '
*sigh*
Come back Bill, we miss you.

I still have to read the arguments for and against and compare notes.
At the moment, I lean towards a pro ID mainly because I have a hard time accepting that the universe as we know it started out of nothing with a random bang. I can believe that there was a bang which started it all, but the randomness of it all leaves me doubtful.

Ever seen a picture of Darwin, bruised_blood?

(Jun 14 05, 09:53)tee hee, although to his credit he was trying to make sense of the natural world. His name gets misused with modern scientific belief

Xaos, The universe didn't start from nothing, the Big Bang is a fact, and randomness is only one factor in the evolution of life as you see it today.
- ribit0
does inventing a 'designer' really explain the big bang? easy solution, but is it right?
I don't think the non-designer advocates know the answer to life the universe and everything either.. they just think they should keep searching for the truth...
- discipler0
This has been addressed already in this thread - the thread is starting to go in circles now.
ribit, I'm all for the pursuit of scientific discovery. It's simply that things like the irreducible complexity that scientists are starting to see in biological systems indicate that there is design behind the universe. Design that demands something other than some kind of nebulous mindless force. Evolution cannot exert selective pressures on something that is non-functioning in the first place. Pasteur's famous observation, that life only comes from life, has never been disproved. His experiments have already falsified all claims that life originated from primordial goo.
Science is a wonderful thing. But, we need to question the old notions as we grow in discovery.

(Jun 14 05, 10:30)nothing wrong with that
- mrdobolina0
the old notion being the 2000 year old book?
- Mimio0
No one knows how life started on Earth. There are only ideas, some more reasonable than others.

TheTick's Corollary:
Religion is a wonderful thing. But, we need to question the old notions as we grow in discovery.
- discipler0
Indeed. Question it. Scrutinize... analyze.
...and find, as I did, that it passes the test. :)
The problem is it's more comfortable and easy to buy what someone has already told you about it.

There are no winners in this thread fellas.
The thread's name is a little harsh though, maybe we start another one sometime called 'Evolution vs. Creationism'. There is a common ground on some levels.

I didn't refute the big bang...I just stated that I don't believe it to be random.
JazX, I'm all for it.

holy crap it took me like .5 hrs to catch up on everything. now i can't remember what i was going to say.

You know the Old Tesament has lots of scholarship about it, and most of the mainstream biblical scholarly work seem to downplay a literal translation.
The mainstream biblical scholarship in both Jewish and christian circles speak of a number of different authors at different times. There are in fact two different creation myths in Genesis.
See Discipler can quote scientists who support ID all he wants. I will quote biblical scholars who disagree with a literal interpretatio of the bible. Guess who discounts all this vast resovoir of biblical scholarship? Why the same people Discipler loves to quote - i.e. fundamentalist american christians with an agenda to grind..note the lack of hubub from Jewish sources about the clash between science/religion. There isn't much. And they're the chosen people. You know, in the Bible. Not the Johnny-come-latelys about threethousand years on...

Look if we're going to bring darwinism into question because of what certain christian sects believe I think it is fair to bring into their interpretation of the bible by well-known and attributed biblical scholars.

Too much philosophy for my blood Tick

JazX - And this from a guy who spoke for paragraphs about Argon dating techniques? Oh-vey...
I just decided to change tact . He can attack Darwinism with his scientists and I will attack his interpretation of the bible from biblical scholars.

Ever read anything by Richard Friedman Tick? He's sort of the modern proponent of the dual narrative study of the Pentateuch.
