jaline i was making light of the situation for Meeklo, he himself has been doing freelance forthe laast 4 years, so he must make that change himself. i am all about style and fashion. i am all about heavy presentation for the client or for the job. yes freelancing has its positives and also its negatives. im sure which ever direction Meeklo takes he will do great in, not that he will have to mke such decisions of what will be going on in his mind...its called work for a reason, you may not like it. but do it for all those luxuries you want or may no have...like healthcare paid or able to save without hussling or jumping thru hoops with your taxes...that would release a ton of strees of his shoulders, that could yeild to great things going forward and like everyone else said if he has the time he could always freelance on the weekends...
each to their own.

my own life is upside down and i am lashing out on everyone and everything.
my career is great, but my life isnt. i have been makinga life change, and i see its effecting everyone around me.
my apologies. i hope you can understand.
i like everyone here and i dont want to give off this negative vibe.

Ok so the update on the situation is, I met with the agency, their offer was really low. I'm not going to do it.
Yes I been working solo for a long time. Yes I enjoy wearing my leather sandals everyday, I dont mind wearing a nice shirt if that makes the client happy.
If their offer was closer to my number, then I wouldn't mind going for it, I truly respect the work they do, which to me is as important as salary.

Meeklo, would you be interested in looking for other fulltime work, since you had been thru this now? do you think down the horizon you would try to meet with new potential clientel for back up situations when your freelances become slow? or are you satisfied with your lifestyle and enjoy the hustle?

I was laid off on Thursday by the agency I worked with. I'm unsure if I want to go back to full-time so soon. I'd rather continue freelancing like I did before this stint.
How did you guys swing a deal to work part time at an agency and then have the rest of the week to work freelance on your own? this sounds like an interesting work model.

i think its jsut managing time. for fulltime work you are obligated to finish your work on their hours of operation. i feel igf you have the opportunity to find other work that doesnt conflict with your fulltime work then try it, although it can be more stressful as too many needs to focus on and really not enough time for yourself, but if you want to try it go for it, just dont do it if you signed any contracts with your fulltime employer as that can cause a lot of negativity and blacklisting on you as the designer. so be aware of the cons before you try it.

(Sep 30 07, 11:41)I might be for the right place, to me is really important that I really , reaaaaaaaallly like the work the agency does, and a competitive salary.
If I can't get those 2, then I rather stick with my own gig..

well good luck either way...
have a good night..almost 3am for me and i have to be up in 3 hours for work.

take it, there's still a working days worth of evening when you get in from work for freelance, weekends, bank holidays etc. That's what I'm doing at the mo, teaching in the week and freelance all night. Good for the moment!

Ok it might be good money but there are always the down sides to freelancing, you're always finishing someone elses turd. You don't have much creative direction to projects. They always put you on the shit computer, nobody really talks to you because your the freelancer who is on a better day rate than them.
You don't feel apart of a family/team because you never in one studio long enough and it can be very lonely. You become the designer slut that whores himself out to any studio for any project as long as the pay is good.
Just some other things to think about... money isn't everything.

Leigh:

Not always, the point of freelance to me is to be selective of what are you going to work on
--------------------------------...
You don't have much creative direction to projects.Again, no the case for me, 85% of the time, I'm creative director / lead designer.
--------------------------------...
They always put you on the shit computer, nobody really talks to you because your the freelancer who is on a better day rate than them. That might be true, but I do own my own laptop so if the computer is shit, I will be working on my own. I'm friendly enough to take the first step in meeting everyone...
--------------------------------...
You don't feel apart of a family/team because you never in one studio long enough and it can be very lonely. This I completly agree with :(
--------------------------------...
You become the designer slut that whores himself out to any studio for any project as long as the pay is good.Hey! you are right on the whoring, but that is the nature of the job, isn't it? At least freelancing I'm my own pimp. ;)

Money isn't everything, of course not, but I am looking for a competitive salary AND to join a team I respect, if I only cared about money, I would be doing UI design for a company developing intranet systems for banks.

Haha cool Meekio! go for it!
Good luck!!
