Going to NYC with my girl in a couple of weeks and was wondering how to get up to Montauk. Anyone got a good public transport based idea?
And if you know the area, is there anywhere good to eat?
Thanks

Train.

Better to probably rent a car though. About 4 hour drive from NYC...
- You forget that us Euros actually quite like public transport ...

Why Montauk in March anyways?
- DaveO0
How long would it take from NY on the train? Looks like a long fucking way!
- About the same as a car, but you don't have to factor in traffic. It is a long way.TheBlueOne

Why? In town for a trip and fancied doing something out of town for a day. Also, was inspired by The Eternal Sunshine... for some vast beaches & whatnot. Any other ideas?
- Only cause it's still going to be pretty damn cold.TheBlueOne

you should do it, if you don't mind the train ride. easier than driving and dealing with all that shit.
- DaveO0
Not worried about the cold.....just want to do something nice while we're in town.
Penn station doesn't look too far from the lower east?
- TheBlueOne0
I'd say Montauk is too far out for a day trip depending on how many days you are in town for...

What about a night?

How about a shorter train ride up the Hudson river. Get off in Irvington or Tarrytown something (Home of the Headless Horseman!), check out the nice views of the river, check out the local shops & restuarants, etc...You get water, lighthouse...
- whose photos are those? they are fantastic!lvl_13
- Beats me..I just searched at flickr for Tarrytown NY...TheBlueOne
- nice random find then!lvl_13

My opinion only, Montauk is more of a warm weather destination - yeah it is really beautiful, but there's not much out there. It's a warm weather NYC rich people summer destination. You'll just be there with a bunch of townies and hardcore fisher people. I mean it's the bit of nature all the Hampton socialites travel too to take nature walks...
- DaveO0
Thanks for this... I guess Montauk's quite iconic but the trains are fucking strange... and don't want to double up on hotels......
- Basically I want to go do something with my lady, out of manhattan that doesn;t need too much thought or planning and doesn't involve hiring a car. Not too much is it?DaveO
- Like I said, check out going up along the Hudson river into the 'burbs. Nice stuff there if you look.TheBlueOne

like TheBlueOne insists, now isn't a really good time to do it. if you wanna really do beachy thing, do something closer, like Jone's beach. you can drive there in like 1.5hrs or rockaway beach which is even closer.
maybe it's better to do something like... the cloisters.
- Cloisters is cool, and in NYC. I prefer Long Beach to Jones, but that's just me.TheBlueOne

...or for the romantic beach walk thing try a train to Long Beach (35 minutes from NYC approx). It's got a train stop on the rail, it's a walkable town, nice beach on the Atlantic WITH a boardwalk.

Not really along the same lines, but possibly overlooked in your trip planning, I'd also recommend the Cloisters in upper Manhattan.
- Didn't tkmeister and I already say that?TheBlueOne

i live about 45 minutes from montauk. there's not much going on there right now. i go camping out in hither hills every summer but right now, i wouldn't recommend it. it might be cool since it'll be empty but you'll also be traveling most of the day. staying overnight wouldn't be bad. most of the hotels out there are expensive but there are some bed and breakfast places that are cheap, especially in the off-season.

I dunno if the LIRR has expanded or not, but the last stop on the LIRR is in Matituck which is on the south fork. Montauk is on the north-so even if you take the RR, you would still have to find a way to drive over to the north fork.
Also, if you do make it out there, check out Camp Hero. It used to be this huge abandoned air force base. Some friends and I used to go exploring there. We camped out on the huge building that has the radar dish, tons of underground bunkers to run around in. It's a state park now from what I've read. And watch out for a drunk driving Billy Joel too.
- you have mattituck and montauk flipped. mattituck is in the north fork. actually, there are some nice spots in the north fork.vwsung18t
- mountauk is actually on the south fork. north fork is orient pointvan_rijn
- drunk billy joel is very dangerous. i've met him 4 times. everytime, he was completely incoherentvwsung18t

Nice waves there. Say hi to the Atlantic for me.

So basically, the consensus, is that while being nice idea, Montauk is fine in warmer months, but not so much fun in winter, and I'm guessing if you have a car, it's much easier. The train ride is a long time and I just had a look at the timetables and if I do go, I'd ge there at 2:30pm and have to wait until 10:30 to get the train back.
So in terms of a good day outta manhattan, I'd be better to go a little closer, like rockaway beach or long beach.
Right?
Thanks for everyone's help by the way. I'm doing an anti valentines day out treat for my lady.
