Sen. Kamala Harris has joined the crowded field of Democrats running for president in 2020.

“I love my country. I love my country,” Harris of California said on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Monday. “This is a moment in time when I feel a sense of responsibility to stand up and fight.”

    History of Tax Rates: 1913 – 2019

an anyone tell at which point through all the decades when the top rate of tax was above 70% (1935-1980) was the US a ultra left-wing socialist state?

    • High taxation isn’t inherently socialist, what you spend it is. Based on the years indicated I would guess they were buying lots of tanks and missiles.Gnash
    • some of you act like temporarily embarrassed millionaires. stop complaining about a high marginal tax rate on the rich, it won't affect you!dorf
    • Mostly recovering from WW2robotron3k
    • Exactly to this graph. Taxing the rich didn't affect them at ALL and wouldn't today. With the correct budgeting process a shit ton of problems could be solvedcolin_s
    • They weren't, they had wars to pay for. Currently AOC is saying lets raise taxes for the hell of it. A better idea would be to figure out where all the money iszarkonite
    • going since the budget is $3.8trillion. I mean how the fuck can you not afford everything you want for that kind of money??zarkonite
    • if you can choose to use tax to fight wars you can choose to use tax to look after your citizens health and economic security.lowimpakt
    • not to mention that nobody actually paid those taxes with loopholes everywhere. And tax burden was split more even. Today 10% of people pays 90% of the taxes.Boz
    • they need to kill all loopholes, set a flat tax for EVERYONE and you'll see how quickly when you have to give your own money people change their minds.Boz
    • it's easy to be all righteous and moral when you are giving away other people's money.Boz
    • this argument is 80 years old and nobody ever won it.Fax_Benson
    • A flat tax rate is definitely the fairest solution.zarkonite
    • until it isn'tFax_Benson
    • discretionary spending of the budget is over 50% on the military so uh we could start therecolin_s
    • The rich paying the majority of taxes is exactly the result you would expect in a world where the rich have almost all the money.yuekit

Regarding tax rates, saw this article the other day (based on a report by Oxfam) that has some eye popping statistics

    https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2…

"The world's 26 richest people own the same wealth as the poorest half of humanity"

"Billionaires around the world saw their combined fortunes grow by $2.5bn a day, while the 3.8 billion people at the bottom of the scale saw their wealth decline by 11 percent in 2018"

"The world's richest man, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, saw his fortune increase to $112bn last year. Just one percent of his wealth was the equivalent to the entire health budget of Ethiopia, a country of 105 million people."

"Getting the world's richest one percent to pay just 0.5 percent extra tax on their wealth could raise more money than it would cost to educate the 262 million children out of school, and provide life-saving healthcare for 3.3 million people."

Now obviously actually implementing a wealth tax would be difficult esp globally...but I'm curious what the argument is for those of you who feel so strongly that the rich should not be taxed any more.

Is there a good moral argument against taxing the ultra wealthy slightly more if you could prevent 3 million deaths per year?

    • it used to be a centrist, bi-partisan idea. though the mega rich got their claws into government.inteliboy
    • and apparently its this kind of thinking that is 'cognitive dissonance' according to right wing nut jobs. yeah ok.inteliboy
    • Lol World Economic Forum in the Swiss City of Davos, perhaps they should hold their next Forum in Somalia and be the first to give...?robotron3k

    • I'm more interested to hear you conservatives on here defend not taxing Zuckerberg or Bezos 0.5% more in order to prevent a literal Holocaust's worth of deathsyuekit
    • every couple years. Instead of bringing up some irrelevant topic. Does the cost-benefit ratio of taxing the rich ever reach the point where you'd be in favor ofyuekit
    • it? Because seems to me we've already reached a pretty ridiculous point when 26 people have the same as 3.8 billion.yuekit
    • I'm not really conservative, not really religious, I agree with some of their stuff but on others probably more libertarian if I'm honest. I was braindeadBoz
    • raving and raging liberal through my 20s and 30s and was probably even worse than most on here. But then I actually opened my eyes.Boz
    • On a question of taxes. I don't think anyone should be taxed more because they make more money really. I'm not jealous at wealthier and rich people.Boz
    • I actually draw lessons and inspiration out of it to be better. I don't need their money, and I certainly don't want other people taking my moneyBoz
    • I asked you about NY because it's clearly a hypocrisy from dems. And I already said, everyone should be taxed the same. Fixed tax and done.Boz
    • and also, even if you taxed the rich 100% you couldn't cover any of the shit leftists are peddling because 50% of this country doesn't pay any taxes.Boz
    • That argument sounds good in the abstract, but if millions of lives could be saved...or its holding back progress of society as a whole...you're still againstyuekit
    • And second, I've seen that scenario play out when I lived in communism and then socialism and what it does and things don't get better. They get actually worseBoz
    • I'll venture a guess that you haven't really experienced that in your life ever thus your vehemently defending it.Boz
    • it, really?? I'm in favor of freedom, libertarianism etc as much as possible, but you have to be practical at some point.yuekit
    • How does being in favor of slightly higher taxes on the rich within a free market system equate to communism in your mind?yuekit
    • One thing I have noticed, people who grew up in communist country often overreact by going all the way to the other extreme.yuekit
    • Look at the actual numbers and I think it's totally justifiable. Not increased income tax maybe but a tax on wealth is where the money is.yuekit
    • My 'moral' argument: They're already being taxed for Millions... many of you find it immoral they have that much money but no moral issues taking it from them..PonyBoy
    • ... that makes you hypocrites and far worse than them. The jealousy / whining I've been reading in these threads lately is strange. So many folks hate success..PonyBoy
    • ... but thievery / demanding what someone else earned be turned over to you is just fine. Weirdos.PonyBoy
    • And telling yourselves that you're going to snake juuust a 'little more' from them (cuz they won't feel it!) would change the world is naive at best.PonyBoy

    • and happened to be in the right place at the right time.yuekit
    • If you think it's OK for people to die so that Bezos has one more helipad fair enough I guess. I would call that an extremist viewpoint.yuekit
    • Did you just say people are dying because Bezos has helipads? I would like for you to attempt to back that up. :-/PonyBoy
    • ... and there's no way in hell that's my point of view... where'd you come up w/that nonsense, ukitty?? <3PonyBoy
    • haha cmon it's a bit of hyperbole to make a point. So you're OK with taxing the rich as long as it helps people? Or you're 100% opposed no matter what?yuekit
    • Saying the public takes "enough" of their money doesn't make sense to me when 26 people have the same wealth as 3.8 billion.yuekit
    • I'm fine w/taxing folks in a fair manner based on equal needs and overall usage of public '_insert_service_her... We all get taxed on just about...PonyBoy

    • AO-C and friends wish to tax folks who make $10M and over @ 70%.PonyBoy

    • I have a fear here... it's uncorroborated mind you so you can call me out for being a scared lil pussy... ;) —you'd be right— but I 'fear' this is merely step 1PonyBoy
    • ... and if 'step 1' is to tax someone 70% of their income leaving them w/3M instead of 10... then why not bump it to 80%? They'd still have 2M.PonyBoy
    • You're misunderstanding how marginal tax rates work. If you tax income above $10M at 70% and they earn $11M they would still have $10.3 million.yuekit
    • And that's putting aside all the loopholes, shelters etc people with that much money would actually use...which is why a wealth tax would probably work better.yuekit
    • ... which means if I only made 2M... technically I'm taxed 20-22% meaning I only made about 400K more than the guy who made 10M. That's... Bunk.PonyBoy
    • fuck... she did say it was marginal... AND I'm learning myself as I'm reading outside of here that there were only 16K folks that made over 10M in 2016...PonyBoy
    • ... so I'm going to take HALF a step back here and humbly admit my numbers are off re: 10M+ taxes. <3 Again... I fear this is the start...PonyBoy
    • ... if we start @ 70% we've already taken our pants off. That number regardless if it's marginal then is ridiculous.PonyBoy
    • And mind you... I'm all for cutting some shit conservatives / pubs can't live w/out... I'm disgusted by war / aggressive action overseas in any way...PonyBoy

You know what I really find incredible about US politics?
That someone defines Hillary Clinton as being Left Wing...

That must be a fucking joke.
Or just plain and stupid ignorance.

But when I read what people write about Socialism and by their own words I understand that they can not even define it, understand and by extent criticize it...and then just say Stalin bad....

Well, I don't see people in the left playing the Hitler card so often like the other way around.
But maybe that's just my perception.

Any way, the working class struggle in the US is pretty well documented and I don't see how people who got their rights from this struggle and how left wing parties had a major role in it see being left a bad thing from the start.

It's just fucking ridiculous, as like when did right wing parties stand by the side of workers except when it is to point finger to emigrants and say:

    "They took our jerbs!"

I think it's really important to separate Socialism from what guys like Stalin did, seriously.

My father was a hardcore communist but still he could differentiate Reagan from Hitler and also to explain why despite hating Reagan.

I guess the intellectual capacity nowadays when there's so much access to information incredible low.

And the power of argumentation is that of a Kindergarten playground, also among politicians.

I can not imagine the Republican Party 30 years ago support and stand by what's happening now.

And I never liked them but damn people nowadays do anything but anything to be on top, keep power and fill their pockets.

    And folks support them...wow!

In the other hand Democrats are so fucking elitist and disconnected to reality.

I happy that in the US there's people like Bernie or this young lady kicking the white macho balls.

Finally there's someone really left wing in the US politics at that level in like maybe almost a century.

But people are scared of Stalin...LOL!

    Ridiculous!

When minorities stand by the oppressor then it's over.
And to think they called Obama a socialist because of universal health care...fucking laughable!

Basic human rights, how can people stand against it?

Seriously the US needs a massive cure and set its priorities right.
    People first!

And by people I mean people of the World.
    And Earth.

    That should come first.

Not America, not Walls, not Money, not Political Parties...

    • +1
Some here called Obama a Marxist as well.
That's how distorted things have become.

    And this MAGA bullshit...

America is a fucking continent, it's so typical (US) American to say shit like that.

    White people are really sickening...

Make America Great Again would actually mean one continent and no borders.

Because America is not great at all, it could be great if the US would allow it.

    • Semantics, though. Everyone knows when you're on another continent "America" means something different than when you're in the states.nb
    • This pretty much applies to everyone, not just white people, btw.nb
    • I know nb but who's the ruling class that lets it being perpetuated?
      ********
    • LOL the "ruling" class doesn't determine colloquial language.nb
    • Think of it this way: imagine the so-called "ruling class" trying to switch everyone to say "the states" for short instead of "America". Could they? No.nb
    • you are sort of right but you are forgetting one thing, there's a reason why it's not called "the united"

    • LOL! Sorry I was a bit venting you know, sometimes one loses it out of despair...I'm a normal person, I'm not a Republican.

    • therefor full of Americans.zarkonite
    • here: https://en.wikipedia…. It's always noted as the Americas, not America, when referring to the continents.zarkonite
    • Right, plus there's proper naming convention and then colloquial phrasing which is sometimes different and often widely understood within your areanb

Imagine falling in love with drawing as a kid, then going to art school, graduating, eventually choosing a career in art, only to eventually discover that you will make your living by spewing hate through your art.

Ben Garrison's "art" consistently and singularly shows the worst side of his personality. His worst instincts speak the loudest and garner him the most respect.

From the outsider perspective, it's a fucking depressing life.

    • It's very, very lazy to attack the man whilst condensing and brushing aside his satire as 'hate'. You are as much a part of the problem you perceive as he is.Morning_star
    • Oh really. I'm "as much" a part of the problem as Ben Garrison? Good grief.nb
    • Yes.Morning_star
    • Also, it's amazing you use the word "attack".... that my post qualifies as your definition of an "attack" on him.nb
    • Bunch of snowflakes on the right, the slightest criticism (not even directed toward the guy) and you accuse me of attacking. hahaha ;)nb
    • What would you call it then?Morning_star
    • Dude, google the definition of attack.nb
    • Ok..."criticize or oppose fiercely and publicly". What you wrote is an attack.Morning_star
    • Oh, how fierce of me.nb
    • Not that it matters. My issue is, is that you offer no solution, no counter argument, no satirical cartoon in opposition. Happy to hide in the crowd.Morning_star
    • Bunch of crybabies.nb
    • Ditto.Morning_star
    • He has to draw his own cartoon in order to criticize someone?yuekit
    • it's satire for idiots. it's basically the same joke over and over again targeted at the same issue. obsessively moronic shit.lowimpakt
    • What is evident Garrison offers cheap cartoons for the echo chambers and #maga sheeple. I agree with nb he offers a poor version of himselfSalarrue
    • No, not at all. But to criticise someones life choices instead of the politics Garrison promotes is valueless and just adds to cacophony of noise emanating...Morning_star
    • ...from the concerned masses.Morning_star
    • Garrisons satire is lowest common denominator, unsophisticated, repetitive, arguably racist, homophobic and sexist. ...and you focus on his life choice. FFS.Morning_star
    • I mean he's a public figure who puts his work out there for criticism...and his cartoons are disturbingly propagandistic.yuekit
    • But ultimately it's more pathetically funny than anything else IMO.yuekit
    • Yep. So criticise the politics.Morning_star
    • Wait, it's just satire? I really got the impression Garrison was front line for the Trump agenda with his work.monospaced
    • I really just pity him. Then again, who's to say? Maybe it's better to be a shill artist than a non-artist. Still, depressing.nb
    • I'd hardly call his illustrations homophobic. More like homo erotic. We get it, Ben. You are horny for Trump.BonSeff
    • "criticize the politics" Give me a break, his whole shtick is throwing out red meat for morons.BonSeff
    • You don't think that there is a political aspect to this?...this is the politics thread...he's a political cartoonist.Morning_star
    • his point is, we are criticizing the politics, saying that they are a schtick and pandering to the lowest members of that audience, with bigoted memesmonospaced
    • the opinion on this, NOT an attack, is that it's a shame to end up like this as someone who likely trained as a real artistmonospaced
    • I can hop over to the Donald Trump thread and pull quotes from ponyboy and boz at random and pair them up with a Branco or Garrison cartoon.BonSeff
