Well, on spending, Republicans have been getting more "liberal," if you want to call it that (odd choice since Clinton was more fiscally responsible than Bush, and Obama likely would be as well).
But on taxes, deregulation, and social issues, it's hard to argue that Republicans have gotten more liberal. Beam Richard Nixon or Gerald Ford or even Barry Goldwater into modern times, and you have a centrist, or even center-leftist on many issues by today's standards.

Obama's socialist backing goes back at least to 1996, when he received the endorsement of the Chicago branch of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) for an Illinois state senate seat. Later, the Chicago DSA newsletter reported that Obama, as a state senator, showed up to eulogize Saul Mendelson, one of the "champions" of "Chicago's democratic left" and a long-time socialist activist. I am of the opinion that "left" "right" "liberal" "conservative" "socialism" "free market" etc. mean absolutely nothing. People use them and we all nod along like we know what it means, but really I think the words themselves no longer correspond to anything in the real world. The map and territory are no longer in sync. I think we are in need of a serious shakeup to get reality and the words we use to describe it in sync.

A country can have socialist aspects without being communists. Canada is a perfect example. We believe in more social programs and having healthcare, but other than that, its free market capitalist.

Conservatives are too eager to brand anything they don't like socialist. If you look at what Obama wants to do with taxes, he would bring them back to the rates we had under Reagan. It's only socialist by the extreme standard set by Bush.
And rescinding the Bush tax cuts will help the federal government begin to repay it's debt, BTW.

McCain wants to not only keep the Bush tax cuts, he wants to extend them, which is insane. 300 billion in new tax cuts every year - half of what we are spending on the bailout EVERY YEAR going to tax cuts for millionaires.

for all this talk of low taxes in the us verses 'socialist' countries they don't got much to show for it. instead they got huge personal debts from consumerist culture and no personal savings. if you're supposedly paying less for taxes you should save it....oh wait you can't you have to pay for everything nevermind.

Obama's Real Problem With Ayers
At an education forum in Venezuela, Bill Ayers showed the real issue is not his terrorist past. It's the socialist revolutionary agenda that he and Barack Obama want to impose on the nation's schools.Still more evidence of how the media are in the tank for Obama was evident in Tom Brokaw's description of Ayers on Sunday's "Meet The Press."
"School reformer" is how Brokaw identified the co-founder of the Weather Underground, the radical organization that, among other activities, bombed government buildings, banks, police departments and military bases in the early 1970s.
Yeah, right: Ayers is a school reformer in the same sense, as City Journal's Sol Stern put it, as Joe Stalin was an agricultural reformer.
