So I am at this interview with a local agency and doing the normal round of questions:
as the interview is going I find out they need : Video Editing, Print design , and Web design ..
so I am raising a figure of how much I would do it for in my head , when I finally here that they are offering 25k for 40+ hours work ! I almost got up and left on the spot ...
The owner of the agency tells me how the economy hit his business hard and went from 10+ employees to now 3 with one leaving the one I would be replacing ...
I was making 50k+ doing development work in my old job, which I quit on my own accord but the work was dull and making me miserable
here I would have creative freedom and lots of room to grow but would start at a grunt wage ..
I passed the guy said should I change my mind to call him back ... says once work picks up I could be way over 50k ... would you take it ?

"says once work picks up I could be way over 50k"
if you do change your mind, get that figure on paper and make him sign it

I would take it... I'm desperate.

This guy's 'says once work picks up I could be way over 50k' sounds exactly like one of the old gems you get from cheap-ass freelance clients: 'We've got an insultingly small budget for this massive project, but if you do, I can promise you that you'd get an epic shitload of work from us in the future!'
I'd walk away.

N O.
25k? you could get that for scanning and changing light bulbs

fuck no.

Only if you are desperate to pay the bills.
But, from the sound of it, don't be surprised if you get the "We can't make payroll this week" in the near future.

As brandelec said, "says once work picks up I could be way over 50k" means absolutely nothings if its not written down.
Generally its safe to assume if you are hired in at 25k, that is your starting point and you have to work your way up. Companies generally won't double your salary once they have you locked in.
Consider it if you need the cash, but don't expect to make more there any time soon.

you can make more selling PCP

you could make more landscaping or cleaning pools and you'd be outside. 25K is peanuts. Don't look back.

Desperate or not, you'll be spending your entire 8 hour day dwelling on the fact that you're not getting what you're worth. Every... single... day...

hell no.

So is the person that's leaving the print designer, web designer, or video editor?

If you;re really experienced and got a good portfolio, 25k is insulting so let them know that and walk away.
PS - If they've been hit hard like that, it's not because of the economy - its most likely that they are crap in one way or the other.
Getting underpaid AND get tarnished with the same brush?! Not a good move.- can see your point.
good agencies still get work even in recessions.Hombre_Lobo
- can see your point.

it's also 25K less taxes.
What's the takeaway going to be?
