I'm all for upending global economic structures but this makes me think of the Beanie Babies craze in the 90s.

I thought the whole idea was that this wasn't possible anymore?

3,8 mill BTCs (out of 21 mill possible) are lost forever.
There is no security net to catch you when you fall, and no limit to how much money you can lose because of some ridiculous technical detail -- tons of people have lost their investments by sending BTCs to an ETH address etc.
I think more BTCs are lost because of corrupt hard disks and sausage fingers than from hacked exchanges.
If it was a regular bank, well, for once, money cannot disappear into void, you either move money to a different bank account or you have an error. Even if your VISA is stolen, the bank covers it etc.
"Internet money" in a nutshell.

Bitcoin could cost us our clean-energy future
https://grist.org/article/bitcoi…
The digital currency is slowing our efforts to achieve a rapid transition away from fossil fuels.
- i use a gas generator for my mining rigsGuyFawkes
- mining BTC is a joke.inteliboy
- There are other less energy consuming crypto's. Check groestlcoinCalderone2000
- https://powercompare…
100% of total world energy consumption by 2020drgs - which of course will not happen. At some point between now and 2020 it will no longer be profitable to mine BTC (unless BTC price keeps up with energy costs)drgs
- but there is clearly a limit to that. miners will be forced to work more efficiently -- mining pools will dominate, leading to centralization of bitcoinsdrgs

Official press release regarding the NiceHash security breach
Unfortunately, there has been a security breach involving NiceHash website. We are currently investigating the nature of the incident and, as a result, we are stopping all operations for the next 24 hours.

- It's OK, Trump told me global warming isn't real.yuekit
- If the price keeps up with mining costs, it should be 1 mill USD per BTC in mid 2019drgs

Anyone looking into any of the other coins? Ripple, Dash, iota? - Drgs?
- Good questionR_Kercz
- I have only BTC and IOTA. There might be other profitable coins, but BTC has been growing so strongly other alts are almost not even worth consideringdrgs
- I had got into ETH and Litecoin 18/5$- Yes, Wish I had added to Bitcoin. Ripple is still cheap .22c , researching that.BH26

- But it can't replace the petrodollar?
I mean structurally and practically, not morally or otehrwise.detritus - I assume BTC will implode dramatically when people sense the bubble's about to pop and they all make a run on cashing in their investment.detritus
- ..of course, that could be just sour grapes from someone who's bored themselves saying so often, limply "I should've bought last month".detritus
- My main worry with BTC is at some point it's simply going to represent too juicy a target for the world's black hatters to NOT bother with.detritus
- I'd say the biggest threat at this point is government regulationyuekit
- Perhaps, but I imagine that might be fairly hackable, regardless?detritus
- Hmmm my perception is that it's safe as long as you keep your coins at a major exchange such as Coinbase... but who knows.yuekit
- Perhaps. I tend to assume everything connected to the net's got a chance of being hacked - esp. if it's a repository for highly valuable bits...detritus
- eg. https://www.theguard…detritus
- ...although I've probably watched too many defCon talks :)detritus
- Let's put it this way, Coinbase is big enough at this point that if it was hacked it would be a major shitfest.yuekit
- Yeah, that's the thing - Uncle Sam's got the world's most powerful military backing its currency. All bitcoin's got is the prospect of shadenfreude..detritus

As someone who spends a fair amount of time these days in the developing world, I always thought the best use case of Bitcoin is this:
You land in a new country, no need to change currency. Just point your phone at the local street vendor and buy something.
Still hasn't happened...people seem far more interested in using it as digital gold rather than a way to transact.
But if it or another cryptocurrency actually achieves critical mass...then maybe?

https://www.coinbase.com/charts- A friend bought at around £3k apiece earlier this year. So now he's earned $50k this year from that alone? What am I doing with my life?detritus

- Good for them, thats great.R_Kercz
- Yeah, he's my best chum, so I'm merely irritated :) Esp. at myself as I distinctly thought we were near peak when he bought them. I'm an idiot.detritus
- just like gambling, it's only worth what you walk away withmonospaced
- Yyyyeah, I know. I loathe gambling, and am inherently distrustful of things I don't fully grok, so have remained wary.
More fool me though!detritus - I was bemoaning my inability to fully understand ETH with said friend y'day - he said "what's so hard to understand? [insert incorrect blockchain explanation]"detritus
- ...which is why he's rich and I'm not, I suppose!detritus
- Well, not so much incorrect, rather "a wholly veneer-level of understanding - more an awareness of terms than actual comprehension"detritus

Bitcoin soars then falls back; banks raise risk concerns
- Bennn1
I know nothing about Bitcoin... Am I passing something important here? Should I start learning about it?
For me at the moment it looks like something very complicated with lots of risks to get hacked and/or lose everything.
