Sold all my Bitcoin for Nano (https://nano.org/en)

So, I'm about to try to cash out some gambling winnings, and my book has Bitcoin withdrawals for free, and it sounded straightforward enough until I actually began the process. Two things are hanging me up that are probably easy but are testing my ability to comprehend the 21st century.

    1. I set up a wallet, and the Bitcoin outlet will sell me a Visa card to load with Bitcoin for $10. Even though they require me to have a credit card on file to set up a wallet, they won't let me use the credit card to pay the $10 Visa card fee. I'm like, huh? So how am I supposed to give them $10 without it?

    2. Once I figure out #1, which is probably obvious to anyone younger than 25 (I'm 56), something I don't understand is, if my book lets me cash out $1,000 of what in other circumstances I'd call cash, but as Bitcoin, does the balance on the card fluctuate with the whims of the market, or is my $1,000 still $1,000 until I use the card to make a purchase?

I just hit myself in the temple with a ball peen hammer. Felt good.

    • Who is it that's trying to sell you a Bitcoin visa card? Most people are not using Bitcoin like that, they just keep their coins in a wallet (either on ayuekit
    • website like Coinbase or on their local machine) and convert to $$ as needed.yuekit
    • BitPay. It just seemed to me like being able to use a Bitcoin debit card would be the best circumstance. Like, I don't get how to "convert to $$" as you sayallthethings
    • Ah I see... https://bitpay.com/c…yuekit
    • So it looks like how this works is that you convert the Bitcoin to dollars whenever you load money onto your card.yuekit
    • The balance on the card itself doesn't fluctuate since it's not really Bitcoin. It's just a quick way of selling the Bitcoin in your wallet and cashing out.yuekit
    • Aha...that's helpful, thanks. Quick is good, because (I guess it's generational) I feel like it could just disappear in a heartbeatallthethings
    • Now I just have to figure out how to pay for the card. Maybe it's barter...I bring a virtual goat, and...allthethings
    • Yeah it's a cool thing to have (I might even try to get one) but keep in mind you can always sell your Bitcoin with the click of a button on any other exchangeyuekit
    • website such as Coinbase etc. It might just take a few days to withdraw the dollars to your bank account, whereas this seems to give you faster access to it.yuekit
    • omfg. I bought BTC with Coinbase to cover the 9.95 cost of the BitPay card, linked my two accounts, and it sent 7.35, still pending, so now both accounts areallthethings

    @ yuekit

As near as I can figure, BitPay is a scam. All I was trying to do was pay BitPay $9.95 for a BitPay Visa card. I bought BTC at Coinbase and linked the accounts I'd opened at both. But when I tried to buy the card, the two accounts weren't linked after all...I needed to transfer BTC from Coinbase to BitPay. It ended up transferring some money, but not all I needed, and meanwhile the value of BTC was plummeting. It took three transfers, admittedly of a small amount of money...$19 and change I believe it was, which after a few hours was showing up as $14 and change...with each of the transfers taking mining fees...

...AND THEN when I tried to buy the card, it didn't recognize my password. I tried various permutations, but nothing. So I pressed "forgot my password," and 14 hours and counting later, I have received no email link to do so. There is no way to contact the company...no chat function, no email, no phone.

So what was supposed to be simple, pay them $10 for a card, has been anything but. My bank account is less $20, and I have $14 in a BitPay account that I can't access. And I've spent several teeth-gnashing hours trying to figure this out.

I'm thinking Bitcoin has its own problems beyond this one company's scam, which is why I wanted the card in the first place. I went in this direction to avoid my book's $60 charge to send winnings via FedEx. But if I do that, when I get a check it will be the same amount that I expect. Buy Bitcoin and it's like participating in the most fraudulent exchange on the planet, but even worse...if you're in a foreign country and your hotel rips you off exchanging your currency for the local currency, well, you've been ripped off but you have the bills in your hand. With BTC, you make the exchange and then every half hour the hotel employee shows up wherever you've gone with your exchanged money and grabs some more of the bills out of your hand.

My girlfriend said, "Couldn't the value of your BTC go up one of these days, and then you'll have $30 instead of $14?" I guess, theoretically. Probably the mining fees would go up too in that case.

    • Bitcoin is like a gain magnet for all the worlds sleazy scammers, marketers and greedy thefts.shapesalad
    • Download a digital wallet to your phone (Copay, Bread, etc.) and have your book send the bitcoin to that address. You dont need (or want) a BitPay visa cardridg0026
    • And if you want it ready to convert to $USD, then just keep your bitcoin on a respected exchange like Gemini or I guess Coinbase (personally I'd hold it)ridg0026
    • They left out (I think) the biggest vulnerability. Sloppy security, or outright fraud on exchanges, and market manipulation. It destroys the public trust.monNom
    • Aww man... That was for the post with the table below.monNom
    • @ ridg0026 I downloaded a digital wallet to my phone; get an error message when I put in my "spending password"allthethings
    • The main thing is, I want to turn BTC into USD, and I want to do it quickly so that if I'm sent $2,000, I have $2,000 to spend and not $1824 or somethingallthethings
    • Coinbase takes a fee to exchange and send to your linked bank account, but they don't tell you how much they'll chargeallthethings
    • Personally I avoid Coinbase for that exact reason, but they're generally the most often used 'on-ramp' for ppl new to crypto. Gemini is a very reputable exchangridg0026
    • and I recommend getting a verified account on there. I've never had issues quickly selling or storing bitcoin on there. as for your wallet, which did you get?ridg0026
    • So you're saying Gemini has listed and low fees? I don't have the faintest idea what kind of wallet I have...I believe I mentioned I'm 56? Am cluelessallthethings
    • Yea Gemini is only like .25% or something. https://gemini.com/ If you want to email me from my profile, I can try and help you out.ridg0026
    • Failing to see an email there mate, but thanks. The BitPay Card purchase just went through so maybe I'll try that and find out about fees the hard way.allthethings

Does anyone here accept Bitcoin as payment?

A friend who has his toe in this space says that he encounters a lot of whining from people who have Bitcoin, but are unable to use it for much of anything beyond sitting on, so suggested to me that if I were to accept Bitcoin, it might generate interest - does that ring true to anyone here?

Because of what I do, I'd quote for a period at whatever rate best suited both parties, so wouldn't encounter the sort of situation traditional shops have where they have to be careful with what prices they set.

    • We steer clear of it.
It's not money, those people were scammed to believe it was.
I personally treat stores that accept cryptocurrency suspiciously.

    From the classics

"Hey hey hey. Hey hey hey. Hey hey hey. Wassa-wassa-wassa-wassa-wassa-wa... BitConnect!

Hey hey hey, everybody. My name is Carlos Matos, and I am coming from New York City, New York. Let me tell you guys today: I am so excited, I am so happy, I am really so thrilled to be here right now sharing this amazing, glorious, super and exciting moment of my life with all of you guys. And let me tell you that we are really changing the world as we know it. The world is not anymore the way it used to be. Mm-mm, no no no.

    Bitconnect! Woo!

    Bitconnect!

We are coming and we are coming in waves. We are starting and we are going to actually go all over the world. We are belting the entire world. Let me tell you guys that I started 137 days ago with only $25,610. And right now, I am reaching $140,000. Whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa, wassup!

And let me tell you that I am actually earning around 100-- I mean around $1,400 on an everyday basis seven days a week. WHAT?!

I am right now independently, financially independently... I am saying to so many people who said that this was going to be a con artist game, that this was going to be a scammer game. "Hey, you're gonna lose all your money." My wife still doesn't even believe in me. I'm telling her, "Look, honey these is real."

"No, no, no, no, no. That's a scam!"

And I said, "I'm gonna go to the bank, I'm gonna get my Bitcoins, I'm going to actually put it into dollars. Here they are right on the table."

"No, that's money that you took from another account."

I say, "What am I gonna do?!"

Then I said to my wife, "You know what?" When I am starting to put $10,000 a day on her, right on her-- you know, on her table," then she's gonna say, "Whoa!" Yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-ye... okay, that's real!"

So guys, I wanna tell you something. Faith and belief is the one thing that we will need to be able to change the world. And right now, I believe that, in this g-room, we have the seed, that's gonna germinate and that's going to explode into an amazing opportunity for us to change this entire world.

I am so proud, I am so honored, I am so excited to be here right now. And let me tell you something. That each and every one of you has the opportunity to become, by those amazing people that we know here from Vietnam-- hey hey, my people from Vietnam-- making so much money that they can probably have a real hard time counting it! Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

So guys, let me tell you, I loooooooooooove... BitConnect!"
