I am planning to move to NY in about a month or two, will be working in the Lower East Side area and am pretty unfamiliar with the city.
Which areas would you recommend renting an apt. in, no dependants, and budget up to 1800-2000$/ month?
East Village?
Lower East Side?
Tribeca? Also, any recommended apt. search websites?
Thank You!

I would actually recommend using something like airbnb for the first month to try out a few different neighborhoods. Then you can focus on the area that you feel fits you are your interests best. Living in Tribeca is very different than living on the LES.
Your budget will get you a studio apt in all of those areas at varying degrees of size and niceness, or a decent one bedroom in good parts of Brooklyn. If you go into a share with that budget, you'll get more for your money.
- What are the Nicer areas of Brooklyn?dragonfruit
- mainly: williamsburg (bedford stop) parkslope, dumbo, cobblehill, brooklyn hgts, ft greene.Douglas
- williamsburg is not nicedoesnotexist

With that budget you should be able to find a decent place in Manhattan. Anywhere on the east side should suit you well, really. No matter what, you're just a few subway stops from work, and always close to the action.

Find a broker, if you want to pay someone to do a lot of the work for youAlso, how did you come up with that budget? I only ask because you might want to go lower or higher depending on your actual salary. I had to reassess my apt spend after a few months here.
- I currrently live in Venice CA and thats abt my budget here, but of course my apt here is much bigger than I imagine I would get in NYdragonfruit
- in NYdragonfruit
- Interesting. You might want to drop your price range and spend more on food. But not having a car will help.monospaced
- Keeping the same salary as in Venice?monospaced
- im getting a slight raise in salary in NY & I just quit smoking so 200$ more in my pocket per month !dragonfruit

- Yeah, I can imagine a straight guy moving into an apt and haring a bed with a gay man. PITB!fyoucher1
- why is it a 2 bedroom, yet the other roomate sleeps on couch...and he still wants to "share" a bed?!

I would say live in Manhattan first. As a native Manhattanite who has lived in Brooklyn for the last 8 years, you won't truly appreciate BK until you spend time living in 'the city'
for your price range, you should be able to find decent amount of options. When you start looking, be ready to put down money on a place that day. I've seen some great apartments, only to wait an hour and then lose it. Real estate here is no joke and great apartments get got with the quickness.
By the way, i want to give props to the first 'moving to NY' post I have read where the poster has a realistic assessment of rental prices, unlike the people who think they can find a nice loft studio for $800/mo where they can live across the hall from Rachel and Monica.

if you dont mind the men.. Christopher street in west village has some seriously amazing brownstones with some craazy sized apts.. for that price you can get a tree lined block.. lots of great food spots.. surrounded by men only.. if you dont mind it.. that area is one of nyc best.. its also hella lot quieter than the east village..
- the downside, is usually a 6 flight walk up.. meaning 2 landings totally 12 flights up.e-pill
- I dunno, the apts there are super expensive dude. My range is the same and I couldn't find anything around there.monospaced
- "super expensive" don't like the sound of that. :-)akrok
- yes most are.. but there are lots that arent and lots that are rent stabilized in that hood..e-pill

I will move also in NYC for 3 months with my girlfriend in January and im still looking for a place to stay .. i dont know what to choose between vacational or sublet rent .. Any suggestions? We would like to have our own apt. We looked also Airbnb but we did not find anything interesting (ugly apt and f** expensive). We have a busget of $ 2400 max a month. Any suggestions?
- 2400 is a large budget, is that rent only?what type of neighborhood are you looking?e-pill
- Agreed, 2400 should get you a pretty nice spot. I guess it all depends on what you're used to, though.duckseason
- Yes only for rent (including Tv and Internet). We would like to stay in Manhattan but we dont know exactly where. Must be quiet and safe.Irafis
- quiet and safe. We found this for 70$ a night: http://goo.gl/QMFVXIrafis

If you have a $2000-2500 budget you can live in a lot of the "nicer" areas, the trade off comes from the amount of space you will get.
