- Introduce yourself
- tell them where you got their contact, and why you're contacting them (ie: John Smith said you might be interested in someone with a design background and C# skills for iphone apps.).
- list very briefly your skills, and how you've used them to great success in the past.
- Close with an open invitation to discuss further, even if they don't have any projects on the go right now. Maybe touch on how you might help them. (ie: offer new products, better outcomes, etc.)A portfolio link is super important too. Sell them, then show them.

- personalise whatever you do to either that person or that company
Someone mentioned the other week on here that they'd had an application for designer position out of the blue and the girl had designed the company's letterhead as a demo of her skills.
I always remember a beautiful CV I got sent a few years ago, it was a hand bound book with the girls cv in it. The font used looked like handwriting so the whole thing looked like it had been done as a one-off piece rather than a mass produced and mindlessly sent to hundreds of companies.

If you are a creative person then do something creative rather than sending an email. A bog standard email is just going to end up being disregarded.
Do something creative and clever and mail it to them or hand deliver. Take advantage of the fact you've got an actual contact to get in touch with. Give them something special that'll make them take notice and remember you.
That'd be my advice. Surprise them with something nice. Fuck the email.

Hi folks,
A colleague of mine gave me a few contacts to see if they have any available job opening. These companies do big scale projects ranging from exhibition, retail, architecture, interactive, etc. and they go hand in hand with my experiences.
I've never met these people and they aren't expecting my email. As I'm writing, I find a bit hard on how to close the letter.
I briefly introduced myself, say what i do, my desire to apply what i know to other places; but then I can't seem to know how to finish the letter because I don't want to say "hey! are you guys looking for people?!?!"Besides, I'd be great to share a contact here and there so I'd be great to end the letter in a classy professional way.
Any thoughts on how to close it?
Or, being blunt with "I'm wondering if there are any job opening that I can apply to" line is ok?thanks in advance
