you need an actual surface to use the damn thing. kinda defeats the purpose of a mobile device. that's is some innovative shit right there.
- I think it's meant to be multifunctional – mobile and tabletop.i_monk
- lolBonSeff
- how exactly is it mobile if it needs to be positioned a certain way to operate. in this case, a flat surfaceBonSeff
- It doesn't... It is also touch?orrinward2
- Where are you getting that it NEEDS the keyboard (which is REMOVABLE)?i_monk
- Lol imonk.Hombre_Lobo

- every photo its set up like a lapper. no examples of traditional tablet use.BonSeff
- what are people supposed to make of that type of marketing?BonSeff

It's not a bad idea, I'll give them that. Too bad about the Pentagram logo though. And that it's Microsoft.

If I were to get one of these, would I be able to play my music and video libraries that I purchased through the iTunes Store?
If not, it would be hard to get me to switch, despite how innovative it might be. Apple has such a hold on people through their media that getting people to convert will be a big hurdle to clear for any competitor.
- Meanwhile, all the kids hate iTunes.detritus
- my windows nokia connects to osx via an app that's in the desktop app store, so prob yupprophetone
- http://www.zune.net/…albums
- @albums, that's Windows only. Wouldn't help a Mac user to switch. How fucked up...monospaced
- they make iTunes for Window ya know. and you could also access through Spotifymonkeyshine

If it's not $50 cheaper than iPad, I can't switch.

You guys realize that you DONT NEED the keyboard to use the Surface right? It's akin to something like this, which I've seen many iPad owners going berserk for.
- many iPad owners? I've never seen anyone with one.Nathan_Adams
- https://www.google.c…albums
- everyone I know with an ipad that uses it has a variation, the only person who doesn't, keeps it in the boxalbums
- @nathan you don't get out much then. tons of keyboards on ipads out here in the bay area.sublocked
- Maybe it's a "bay area" thing then. Elsewhere, people seem perfectly capable with the onscreen keyboard.Nathan_Adams
- lol, bay area trendBonSeff
- when i'm not composting or eating sourdough, i'm using a keyboard on my ipadBonSeff
- Most iPaders in my office use them. The Costa coffee and Starbucks nearby always have people using them too.orrinward2
- Heh, yeah don't think I've ever seen anyone with those ipad keyboards.fyoucher1

It has a microSD slot and a usb 2.0 port. 2 things ipads should have had on them for years... just saying fanboys. I haven't seen anything saying that they need to be held upright in order to function.
- BonSeff0
ya, and they aren't doing a very good job saying it doesn't.
http://www.microsoft.com/surface…guessing i need silverlight to see the vid, fucking brilliant
- you'd never buy one anyway :)DrBombay
- maybe if i move to the bay area, i mightBonSeff
- Doesn't netflix use silverlight?DrBombay

- netflix interface on apple tv is pretty sweetBonSeff
- I am on an iPhone and def not a hypocrite, I just know that there are other options out there.DrBombay
- I am not going to act like Apple is the end all of phones. Gimme a fucking sd card slot.DrBombay
- Allow me to mount it as a drive to add and remove tracks and movies.DrBombay
- Let me install software that doesn't run through the App store.DrBombay
- It ain't all skittles and Jesus Juice is my point.DrBombay
- ah you selectively buy into certain apple products which allows you to throw down the fanboy card.BonSeff
- all clearBonSeff
- nowhere in this thread are people singing apple's praises.BonSeff
- I don't get it, am I a fanboy or not?DrBombay
- How dare I criticize Apple!DrBombay

The only thing I have against this Microsoft device is the availability of apps, I only want a touch surface for music production. The apps I want are on an iPad. until that changes, the app store will get my money for things like all the Korg apps and Beatsurfing, etc. That is the only reason I have an iPod touch, for some Moog apps, Kaossilator, and iMaschine plus a myriad of other noise & beat generators not available for Android or Windows devices.
Support for Windows app development is strong but who will cater to all 3 or choose Windows over Android while still catering to the iDevices? If these music production companies continue developing their apps for Windows, I'll consider it then.
App developers still prefer iOS over Android

does it run flash?
- it should since it's windows, right?monospaced
- The intel version does, the ARM version does not.animatedgif
- prolly silverlightBonSeff

also yep, the thing i really like about apple is that when they announce a product, it is either available as of today.. or has a very specific timeline, usually within a couple of months..

ipad 4 needs to have a thunderbolt port for it to really be a true game changer
- iPad 4? well, then...monospaced
- sorry, the new new ipadautoflavour

I think it looks great. The windows phones are smooth as hell, and very responsive. This will be no different.
Its also an interesting angle in have a take anywhere.device for everything. Its got a beastly i5 in the pro version. That means take it.to work and work from it with an external.monitor, much like a laptop but more convenient.
The Motorola atrix touch on it. Being to take a phone/tablet everywhere and use it to power your work machine (performance permitting), is a pant wetting prospect.
And the i5 processor is sufficient enough for most design / developers. Provides it is run at a decent speed with enough ram.
- Wow, my bus-phone-typing skills need some work.Hombre_Lobo
- You need a microsoft surface with detachable keyboard, my good man.ian
- haha ian!Hombre_Lobo
- i_monk0
BonSeff – the video clearly shows the keyboard is removable, using magnets or something. From the "marketing" example here ( http://www.apple.com/ipad/ ) are people meant to conclude the iPad can only be used flat on a table? Get a brain moran!
- can't watch the vid, no tengo silverlight. not down with the setup, capiche? move on , dude.BonSeff
- There's a YouTube video posted in the thread, you hapless fanboy.i_monk
- ya i saw that dubstep piss. real informative.BonSeff
- im the fanboy and you are defending a product not tested or on the market. yea, gfysBonSeff
- I haven't owned an MS product in 6 years. Who am I a fanboy for?i_monk
- i question its ergonomics and i am fanboy? wtf's your problemBonSeff

interesting to note that hardware is branded by microsoft. I don't see any ugly sony or nokia logos anywhere.

Definitely a step in the right direction, and I'm interested in trying one of these in store.
I found that keynote kind of uncomfortable to watch though.
