Earlier today, Microsoft began taking pre-orders for the Surface with Windows RT tablet (Surface RT), with prices starting at $499 for a 10.6-in. display and 32GB of storage. The entry-level model omits the Touch Cover, a cover-cum-keyboard that Microsoft has heavily promoted in the months since it unveiled its first-ever home-grown tablet.
"A cover-cum-keyboard" ? WTF?
- Way better than a cum-covered-keyboard...randommail

Surface Pro costs as much as a MacBook Air. Oops.

It's $100 cheaper than 64gb 11in model. That's not even a real Air.
- But the pricing is still faulty.ETM
- my point is that you might as well buy a laptop for the price of the Surfacemonospaced
- a thin one that can run windows, os x and has a lot more powermonospaced
- plus the Surface keyboard cover costs $120 and does NOT come with the tabletmonospaced
- If that was your point, you should articulate that in your post. Rather than make it seem all Apple fanboyish.ETM
- My point was that it costs the same. That's not fanboyish, it's just my point.monospaced
- Your point is valid.ETM

@ETM
The keyboard for the Surface is $120 add-on, taking the $999 128GB model right up to $1,019, which is just $80 shy of the 128GB MacBook Air. Is the Surface much faster?- oops, bad math, Suface + Keyboard = $1,119monospaced
- You were right the first time, $899 + $120 = $1019ETM
- I was talking about the $999 model, actually.monospaced

I don't think Surface will (or won't) be much faster. Both Air and Surface Pro run i5 processors. But there are a lot of other factors affecting speed. Need someone to benchmark the two.
- If their is not at least some performance advantage, the Surface Pro pricing is ridiculous.ETM
- But in the end, I don;t plan on buying either, so don;t care that much. :)ETM
- Same, I have no need for either either.monospaced
- Air is not an "ultrabook". It's ALL the computer you need. I've been using mine for work for over a year.raf
- Can Surface be my only computer? My Air runs CS6, OSX, XP and Win7 at the same time with ease.raf
- in your dreams, raf, only a ridiculously expensive Mac can do that, but you have to pay like, $100 more!monospaced

I really, really wanted this to be good, I really did. I seriously expected Microsoft to be sitting in wait with this amazing product offering that would truly justify the years of delays of getting in the market. It's not Apple fanboyism that's fueling my disappointment, it's genuine disappointment.
Why go the tablet route and then make what is essentially an ultrabook?
- cause many of us want the funtionality of a sometimes-keyboard. Air never interested meformed

Well, clearly they want the general public to gravitate to RT. They want to kill off the legacy stuff. That strategy is sound for rebuilding. However, they should have made the RT another $100 cheaper.

I am still optimistic about it. I love the idea. My iPads are such expensive toys, mostly useless, but pretty.
If I can get a tablet that can, sometimes, be used for light PS work and other truly functional tasks then I am there.
If I wanted a laptop, I'd get something powerful that would cost a few grand.

still hope i get one for xmas tho lol

Ouch. Samsung says "fuck it."

It was a really stupid marketing move to name them both almost the same. No one will ever understand the difference (I had to go and look to remember which was which).
That said, I am still excited about the full versions. I would really like a useful tablet (no, my iPad is nothing more than a super expensive toy)

Surface Pro Review from Penny Arcade's Mike Krahulik. Interesting as he expresses love for sketching with the stylus:

This commercial made me crack up. Sometimes I feel like the Android vs iOS threads on QBN are like this.

- Not bad. Better than break-dancing, hipster "office workers."ETM

- they aren't rules just because you made them up and wrote them down and posted themmonospaced
- if you want to play the game successfully, these are the rules we play by. or you're left looking like a mono...albums
- yep, them the rulesinteliboy
- This deserves it's own thread********
- I think you confused 'rules' with 'guidelines,' or 'suggestions' there buddy. Anyway, we all know that isn't the first rule.monospaced

All the early reviews were shitty about this product. Now suddenly I began reading what a big game changer device is on tech/gadget sites.
Either there's some truth about it or MS shoveled some money into their mouths.
- ETM0
Most early reviews were for RT. More recently for the Pro. Is that the differentiation? The Pro has been a little better received.
I think there was also a knee-jerk, negative reaction simply because it was MS. I have read a few articles where people have noted it took them a little time to realize some of the benefits (ad overcome bias). Not sure about game changer though...
