i may be late on this, but the gun was purchased legally and in the name of the shooter's mother.
    Irony.

    • Guns should not be available, to anyone.

^^ @eoin, i get it. i live in the states and assholes like these really have no place in society. worse is when the rest of the world looks over and straight up says all you americans are the same. how does that makes sense? i sure as hell don't want to be put in the same category as this mentally ill person, which in most cases, are the people that go through with these atrocities.
it's okay to be mad, we all are.

Gun control sounds good in theory. Here is the problem though, there is estimated to be 250 million privately owned guns in America. When you add in the number controlled by law enforcement and government, that's close to one gun for every person in the country.

Now looking at those numbers, what good is gun control or even a gun ban going to do? It would be like trying to ban TVs or cars.

    • Thats a bit of a defeatist attitude...Governmen... can offer cash incentive for returned guns.toe_knee
    • Not defeatist, just realist...it begs the question of what a real solution looks like.qoob
    • It wont do any good at all. Prohibition and drug bans worked out real well.CygnusZero4

I hate guns. A gun killed my father-in-law in a robbery of his store. Shot in the back of the fucking head. I think guns are horrible fucking things.

But, yeah, I do think the horse has left the barn as far as handgun control goes in the US. There are already too many guns out there, and too many people insane about having them.

I think the only thing that has any hope of stopping violence in the US is some sort of educational program for it.

We teach people math; we teach them how to use computers; we teach them to read and write and drive.

Why can't we teach people to be less violent? Teach people methods of settling differences without violence. Teach people how to protect their family and home without a gun.

Even if it only reduced violence by, say, 10%, that would save thousands of lives each year.

And if we celebrated non-violence, like we do Fourth of July, or Labor Day, with a big parade, and people getting medals, that might reduce violence another few percent, too.

For too long people have gone around in circles on the gun control issue here in the US. While that endless argument is going on, we need to look into other methods of curbing violence in our country.

    • Again, hunting with a long gun, is not the same as owning semi-automatic weapons.ETM
    • Stop using such a pointless argument as "I like to hunt." No one is saying you can't hunt.ETM
    • Mots gun control people are not asking for that either. And it's 'gun control' not all gun ban.ETM
    • And if you have a semi-automatic long gun, are magazines not restricted to 3-5 rounds?ETM

    Extremely sad.

these type of shooting have the markings of a pharmacological use of drugs like anti depressants. like columbine and others. hope there is good investigation, not the same bull.

    • yeah, they actually have, first and foremost, the markings of deadly weapons too easily available.

It's funny the attention these things get because it happens in the most powerful country in the world. Take a trip over to China where mass murders by people as young as 12 happen on a fairly regular basis, but are not covered by the mass media for various reasons.

How about the car bombings that happen every day in the middle east. Sure, lets just ban cars in those countries. Well what happens when you do that? People find other ways. That's the whole issue here and is right when ignorance rears its ugly head.

This kid was lost, desperate, dedicated and angry and snapped. Do you really believe a gun ban would have stopped him? Please. 2 alternative options would have happened. He would have obtained guns illegally, which can happen in every place on Earth, or he would have built a bomb. He wanted to kill people. No laws would stop him from doing that.

Basically what you realize is people are stupid. Oh hey a crazy kid shot up a school. Lets just slap a law on the items he used to do it. Yeah that will stop him and he'll just forget about what he wanted to do and go play some videogames and remain a normal citizen. Derp.

The problem here is PEOPLE. Crazy people have done whatever the fuck they wanted to for as long as humans existed and will continue to do so for the rest of humanities existence. That's how it is and how it will be.

Ironically this also happened today. A knife attack at a Chinese school leaves 22 children wounded.

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/14/wo…

As horrible as that is, they are wounded not dead. So don't tell me guns don't matter at all. Obviously if disturbed people have easy access to lethal weapons, more people will die when they act on it.

    • This is minor, and far worse things happen in China regularly. But its not covered on a large scale because of its frequency.CygnusZero4

Australia banned automatic weapons after a mass murder and gun crime dropped significantly.

Sure there will always be gun crime in the US. But if you ban automatic guns these suburban mom and pops wont have them lying around their houses ready for their kids to go on rampages with.

  • formed0

    CZ4's conclusion: "People are stupid"

CZ4's solution: "Let's give them all guns. You know, cause they could build a missile or something anyway"

There are two choices here: 1) Get rid of people or 2) Get rid of guns. Pretty simple. I am fine with either.

The only real solution is to start reducing the number of guns. No reason the gov can't buy them back, melt and recycle them.

If that doesn't happen there will be more and more massacres, each getting worse. Eventually somethign will be done, but how many have to die and suffer before half this country gets their heads out of there asses?
(more prediction...it'll be a long, long time as, apparently, many like to keep their heads up their butts)

  • _niko0

If they don't have the balls to stop handguns, do they have the balls to accept free universal healthcare and perhaps help more mentally ill people?

  • CygnusZero40

@formed, here is the primary problem. You simply CANT reduce the amount of guns.

During prohibition they thought it would be more difficult to obtain liquor, when in fact it actually became a huge business and many people became very rich over it, and it was never that hard to get it.

Put a ban on guns and no you wont be able to buy a handgun and register it legally, but that wont stop anyone from being able to buy them because the import business would boom. There is no such thing as eliminating anything. It cant be done and has never worked. There is all kinds of bans all around the world, but people still get their hands on drugs and guns.

The real problem is crazy people, which cant be fixed either, so the real focus needs to be on security. Schools needs to be fortresses, but they arent right now. There is no stopping a crazy kid from getting his hands on things to kill many people, that will never be fixed by any law, but if you can keep him away from the people he's targeting, that's the solution. He was able to get into that school and that shouldnt have been as easy as it apparently was.

    • bro, you just went of the deep end... i would look up if you health insurance covers mental health issues cause you might not be aware that what you are saying is madness.pr2

  • _niko0

maybe we've had it wrong all along

  • Gucci0

I'm not sure about the US, but in Canada, awareness (and more importantly acceptance) is steadily increasing. There are still tonnes of stigma attached to mental health issues, but it's become so prevalent – so many kids with Autism, so many people with soul-deadening depression to name two – that it can't be ignored or isolated anymore.

  • formed0

CZ4 - why can't you buy guns back? Why can't you impose harsh penalties for illegal possession?

So, let's just lock everywhere down, is that the answer? Security guards trained in some 1 week course weilding Glocks. Yeah, that makes me feel comfortable. They'd empty as many rounds at panicking teenagers as they would at any would be assailant.

The "hero" logic is flawed, and honestly, extremely selfish and naive. This notion that just because you own a guy, go to the range every 6 months, that you can someone decipher who the assailant is amongst of screaming crowds, scrambling for cover is insane (selfish and naive). Then, remaining calm, aim and fire. Yeah, right. They'd kill more than the gun man in their own panic.

Now imagine that citizens whipped out their own guns. My God, talk about a horrible scene.

Stopping....how do you think you are going to "stop" someone on a suicide mission?? Have you seen suicide attacks on military stations? There is virtually nothing you can do without having forewarning.

A security guard watching the metal detector would just be the first to go, certainly no deterrent there.

There is no 'one' solution, but to turn your back on the first and most obvious approach, the items that ENABLED him to quickly, impulsively, go on a rampage, is just stupid.

Security, yes, we need that too. How about gun tracking? Detection of when it was discharged? All possible. Make every gun built have a GPS chip inside (easy to take out, but like this case and all the other massacres, the guys just don't care, so knowing anything would be helpful).

I don't know, I just know that all the effort to protect guns is just beyond me.

Further, the passion some hold to carry arms is crazy (did we not just see a 7 year old killed by his father's gun as his dad was getting in the truck? Stupid shit happens when you are carring a deadly weapon. It just does).

As I said before, I own a handgun, have owned many guns, for nothing more than I have always loved guns, particularly assault weapons. I was against limiting mag capacities, wanted my class 3 license to own a full auto, almost got my permit. So I am not just some gun hating person. I truly love the guns.
BUT all these killings have turned me. If there's a buy back, I'll be first inline with my weapon.

If there is a big increase in gun purchases (which there will be if there are not extreme new laws), then I'll probably get a firearm to carry to protect myself against all the hero idiots who think they can "save the day" whenever they, and surely they are great judges of character and intent, deem it good to whip it out and start firing, ask questions later.
I'll be shooting at them, forget any crazy lunatic.

God, or someone, help us all.

Gun lobby is making billions from their sales. Many Americans don't feel safe without having guns.

So don't ban guns but only allow certain type of bullets that don't kill but at most injure to be sold. This way gun lobby still makes their money and paranoid people feels safe only by having a gun(coz it's mostly psychological). A regulation like this seems more acceptable for both sides I think.

    • That's logical. But that would be "big Gov telling everyone what to do, imposing on your rights"formed
    • Plus, people will argue that the "killer" will have "real" ammoformed
    • Remember armor piercing bullets? Why in hell were they allowed to be sold to citizens in the first place?!formed
    • But many did they sell, increased in value when they were being banned....f'in' insane.formed
  • ETM0

Maybe we should stop with the gun law bickering and put this in perspective...

Even at this hour, there are dads and mom's sitting around a firehouse, while their 5 year child still lies dead on a cold floor of their school, waiting to be identified. Some of the parents had to wait alone, as the other was forced to go home, dig through loving family photos and find one, so an official could try to identify the remains. The remains of the children that are currently just numbers 1-20. Kids who didn't even get through their first year of school.

No matter how horrific this is, it is now compounded with it being at Christmas. Think of those parents when they get home and have to see those presents they bought for that happy Christmas morning. Again, somehow pressing a knife already at it's hilt, still deeper.

Think that no matter how much time goes by, and how you never get over the loss of a child, now you will never share Christmas the same way with anyone again.

And don't forget the first responders, who have to deal with this. How do you cope with walking into 20 slaughtered kindergardeners?? How the fuck do you keep it together? This is not adults or even high school or college kids.

I don't know how people live with this. And before anyone pipes up about the horrors in the middle-east, I spend a great deal of time in the place of parents there, too. And I can't image the loss they experience every day. As a parent, I simply can't imagine how you go on.
