Guns are about power and mysticism - the poetry of life & death. Holding a gun you are in charge of someone else' life (as well as yours). You decide who lives or dies. In a society where general curiosity and exchange of ideas is not encouraged we have a was army of people who can't express their inner emotions - they literally lack basic vocabulary to name a whole range of grays in between "black" and "white." If only this nation was more educated - even on the most basic level - where one could simply express their emotional states - to literally name those states - then they wouldn't have to resort to this extreme escapism of life or death, of going either towards white or black.
