Obama just said it himself. No law can stop people from doing what they are determined to do and in a way Im happy to hear him recognize that because that will help us get to the heart of the real problem. That's been my point this entire time. Ban assault weapons, or even a blanket ban on all firearms and it will not fix the real problem. The problem is crazy people who are neglected and not receiving the help they need.
There is info getting out that this kid was troubled, isolated, threw tantrums often, people around him knew it, and his own brother cut contact with him 2 years ago, and noone did anything about it. Well once he snaps, no law will stop anyone from taking lives if that's what they want to do.
So the real solution has nothing to do with guns at all, but people being more proactive when they see someone who is troubled. The US is a very large country, there are crazy people everywhere. People post pictures of assault weapons and wonder how anyone can own them. No law will ever stop people from obtaining weapons or finding other more creative ways to take many lives.
When you see someone who genuinely seems troubled its up to us to help them, not rely on the government to instate some useless law that will not stop this. But people take the shortcut and just want to ban weapons. Yeah sure, that will really make it completely impossible for people to get them. Please, all that will do is make gun dealers very rich and turn it into a booming import business, just like cocaine which BTW is also illegal, and people still have it in every town in every state.
- Assault weapons still need to be banned, regardless.ETM
- So much of what you spout is flawed, An average citizen is not equipped to help the mentally ill.ETM
- Most people's families can't, let alone some stranger. Government must be involved.ETM
- Mentally ill can't typically acquire a gun. The shooter himself was denied. They are not criminals nor running in criminal rings.ETM
- criminal rings. If a gun is not easily obtainable. it might never be obtained.ETM
- Creating a bomb is not that easy as POS sytems, CC's etc often have algorithms looking for purchase patterns.ETM
- The same way they look for patterns of stolen cards. Guns fulfill fantasies that fertilizer bombs do not.ETM
- I could punch holes in your 'theories' for days.ETM
- If mommy wasn't some gun nut, it's hard to say what would have happened.ETM
- Have you kept up woth any of the discussion here Cygnus, or are you just going to hold on to your dogma and not see reason, like a lunatic?********

A statement from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department said that, although "schools are one of the safest places kids can be," there will be an increased presence of deputies near schools for the next several days. The department encouraged parents to speak with deputies and ask any questions about safety.

Obama also said that he will use his executive power to put a stop to this type of violence. I agree that the problem is complex and we need to seriously deal with all of the facets. This includes mental illness, healthcare access, and yes, stricter gun laws.
- < Yes, all facets must be equally explored/bolstered, and _some_ gun freedoms simple must be given up.ETM
- What that translates to is I will use this problem we created to overstep my authority and trample the constitution.yurimon
- At some point, the term 'The People' suddenly stopped meaning the greater good.ETM
- Or the greatest good. Protecting even some innocents, especially children should trump the right to pull a gun from your cold, dead hands.ETM
- gun from your cold, dead hands.ETM
- trample the constitution? I assume you mean the 2nd amendment. Yes, redneck militias can defend you from govt. tyranny. get real.monkeyshine
- Have you been awake. NDAA, Kill list? sound nazi to you yet? guns is the last issue to complete the tyranny.yurimon
- dont forget compulsive taxes oh I mean healthscare planyurimon
- the healthcare plan that would take more mentally ill off the streets and get them help?_niko

How much civics, history did some of you people take in school?
because its getting ironic in here from most of the responses aside from the tragedy. I think the broader tragedy is the education system, that birthed your minds.- It would help if you could construct a coherent sentence if you're going to questions others' education.Fax_Benson

Sorry, yurimon, I think you and your fear-mongering, 2nd amendment at all costs extremists are becoming dinosaurs. The times they are a changing and you and your kind are on the wrong side of history.

you ever notice how the people that want to ban guns don't actually own guns? seems like these gun control advocates want to send in armed troops to forcibly take the guns away from responsible, peaceful people.. the irony is unbelievable here.
i personally don't own a gun, i don't feel the need to, however if i did - and then somebody tried to forcibly take it from me - i believe that is when i would use it.. just sayin'
- Yeah thats psychological response people have to loss. it works most everything.yurimon
- oh honestly, can we move past the hyperbole?monkeyshine
- i own a fucking arsenal including a silencer and im now anti gun, 20 fucking 6 year old kids died, no more, fuck the second amendmentmoldero

We had similar gun laws in Australia as in the USA. Apparently from the early 80's until 1996, we had about 15 mass shootings in Australia. In that period America had 21 (these are rough figures - I can't remember what it was exactly!). Quite scary when you consider the population much lower than America's.
The Australian government staged a buy-back of weapons and banned assault rifles from public sale, after a mass-shooting in Tasmania in 1996 where 35 people were killed and 23 wounded.
Since 1997 Australia has had no mass shootings.
It does make a difference - you have to have a holistic approach though. Address the mental health issues - but FFS, what private citizen NEEDS semi-automatic weapons?!?!?
- yurimon0
I dont know what you are talking about monkey lol
I suggest you examine the progression of history. Nothing obsolete in the constitution. Whats obsolete is the peoples understanding and awareness. if you think that slavery is the future then yes free people are obsolete.

"i personally don't own a gun, i don't feel the need to, however if i did - and then somebody tried to forcibly take it from me - i believe that is when i would use it.. "
Some real enlightened thinking there.

How about this for progression? It's almost 2013 which according to the Mayans was the beginning of a new age. Maybe it's time to finally move beyond this idea that violence is a necessary solution to solve problems.
- the state cannot exist without some type of violent enforcement..bliznutty
- all calendars start over.. it doesn't mean anythingbliznutty
- You should write a letter to obama ask about new age of drones, NDAA, hit lists. Gitmo.
criminalization of the citizenry. sound new agy to me lolyurimon - As usual you point the blame at others which achieves nothingqoob
- It seems backwards in the 21rst century to idolize guns.qoob
- And this idea that gun ownership is associated with freedom or self reliance is just ridiculous.qoob
- The right to bare arms is the last line of protecting your other rights. so yes its related to freedom.yurimon
- If guns and free to rebel wasn't related then Hitler should have let the people keep guns then.yurimon

"Australia is another police state protege. Not exactly poster child for freedom. You Aussies bend over nicely." - Yurimon
I am glad kids here don't have to learn a drill about how to react when someone storms into the school with assault weapons. I am also not totally paranoid about my government trying to do me over (they could not organise a piss-up in a brewery, most of the time). We may bend over nicely, but sometimes you have to take one up the ass for the team, Yuri...

This republic was founded for a moral, religious people. Yes freedom demands responsibility. The health, moral strength of the collective individual will impact where this country will end up.
Not to go off the subject but related.
To sum it up. The environment we created is toxic. Majority of us live like a nazi experiment. You know the nazis did experiments on people like show them violent movies. kind like now but you are not in a camp?. people consume shit. Watch shit. You eat shit. drink shit. listen to shit. Take shit medication. You are the total of your energetic consumption and your total deeds. you are what you consume. ON top of this most think this is they are the shit (ego) when we are a shadow generation of what used to be great.
Its no surprise of our contempt to ourselves and allowing our enemies take refuge in our own system and let traitors act like government. Just watch the a slow progression of decay from mass ignorance and the amnesia of free people.
- sounds like hyper culturezaq
- This is such a laughable, meaningless generalization.qoob
- Guess what, people have been eating, drinking, working...since the beginning of time. It's what we do.qoob
- You laughing just creates your own irony because it true. what you think is the high path is the low pathyurimon
- I am laughing at your naive idea that life was somehow better or more moral hundreds of years agoqoob
- where did I say 100 years ago?yurimon
- Violence and gun worship is a primitive idea. Time to move beyond it.qoob
- There are great generations then there are crap generations.yurimon

One Republican lawmaker, Congressman Louie Gohmert of Texas, told Fox News Sunday that the tragedy may have been prevented if principal Dawn Hochsprung had herself been armed.
“I wish to God,” he said, “she had had an M-4 in her office, locked up, so when she heard gunfire she pulls it out and ... she takes him out, takes his head off, before he can kill those precious kids.”
God save your souls.

"This republic was founded for a moral, religious people." is the statement made from the guy who's telling everyone else to get an education.
That's rich. Considering major concessions were made for that utterly moral endeavor of slaveholding for profit. Yes. Quite moral.
The republic was founded for the economic elites, for the elites and the Constitution is a democracy controlling document, not a democracy producing document.
But hey,. you rock on with your "education" there. When you get around to maybe read up on the Anti-Federalist papers, the Whiskey Rebellion, maybe read some Thomas Paine and look up Herman Husband, and why the COnstitution was a document used by the bankers of the time to keep them pesky citizens from trying to take away their money.
Ain't nothing religious or moral about it.
Even your precious 2nd amendment was a compromise left intentionally vague to not scare off the states that were jittery about signing the Constitution and ceding their state militias to federal control. You know, go ahead, use your "education" and look it up. I'll wait.
Man, you spew some amazing inbred, fucktarded shit. That you do so with such abject confidence is what utterly defined the problem with America - as you so succinctly point out - a bunch of idiots who know nothing spewing opinions that they believe are infallable. You know reading a bunch of tea party pamphlets and listening to Ron Paul talk isn't really an "education".
Fucking retard yurimon. I hope you find yourself in a bar full of Australians and tell them how good they are at bending over.
