^ there was a NRA type interviewed on BBC radio this morning that displayed a classic case of the Dunning–Kruger effect.
The interview was funny in that his arguments actually made little sense when placed into a semi-intelligent discussion. In his view there could not possibly be a correlation between a society being swamped in guns and higher levels of gun violence.
The interviewer pretty much gave up on interviewing him because she was surprised how fundamentalist and stupid he was.

Hell is a creeping evolutionary parasite. Like all things that prey on neglected spaces, it takes hold in a small way and starts to spread, taking hold millimeter by millimetre over many generations. Unsightly blemishes on the skin of reality, isolated spots that grow and throw out tendrils of influence. Eventually, the spots meet and become a system. The system ultimately takes over, transforming the world completely, so that it is unrecognisable from the past.
We have always had two visions to work with, and it has been up to us which we gravitate towards. We could have made paradise, or we could have cooked up hell. Its all man-made, and nature. The acts of men we are responsible for, the acts of nature we often are not, but how we respond to them indicates which way we gravitate.
We're building hell. We don't seem to be able to stop. Each of these massacres accelerates the idea of massacre, promotes it, projects it as real possibility. It is a manifestation, and it gives life to other ideas in other minds, throwing out tendrils which take root and grow.
The impossibility of this horror becomes normalised. We accept it a little bit more with each horror, until we see horror as the everyday, just as many societies around the world already do. Children exist and grow with a matter-of-fact acceptance of unspeakable evil. Its not possible for the children of those systems of evil to operate within any other system or language. The system grows.
Welcome to hell.

Now they are reporting that the mother was a survivalist who was worried about protecting her home "in case the economy collapsed"
She trained her son to shoot, probably for the same reasons.

The Gun Rights people have shown over and over they can't handle their right responsibly, so it will have to be taken away from them. So the rest of us can live in some sort of peace.
Another case of tens of thousands of bad apples ruining things for the peaceful majority. But there you go. They should have policed themselves, sometime in the last 200 plus years, when they had a chance.

If everyone traded in their guns and ammo for their weight in MDMA, the world would be a much better place.

I'm thinking more and more about Chris Rock's old bit about raising the prices on bullets. I really think there's a workable model somewhere in this joke.

The killer was a hard core gamer they said. But, we cannot blame videogames they said... I think videogames is just one piece of a puzzle. This is terribly violent and this piece of puzzle put togheter with all the rest of the portrait can lead to a terrible result some times.

Blaming video games and any other outside influence, including the firearms themselves, is ignorant and forgets the fact that an emotionally & psychologically pained individual was thinking unclearly & irrationally.
- Refer to this every time someone dies unjustly by the hands of another.albums

if you read me well, albums, i said videogames was a piece of the puzzle that lead to a finalt terrible result for some people.
Iam not gonna explain you whats the meaning of this, Iam pretty sure you can manage to understand what does that mean.
- qoob0
But couldn't an emotionally pained individual be pushed over the edge by violent video games and media? It makes sense that if you practice gunning people down in a game everyday, a disturbed person might translate that to real life.
- If an entertainment medium leads to murderous rage, the problem isn't the entertainment.melq

- I'm not saying violent stuff is bad for everyone, but it may have an effect on someone who has mental problemsqoob
- Sure, mentally unstable people shouldn't partake in mature entertainment. But that's beside the point, I would think.melq
- I just mean, I think pointing to "questionable" forms of entertainment is easy, but not altogether helpful.melq
