Newspaper that published list of gun owners has hired armed guards:

The White House is weighing a far broader and more comprehensive approach to curbing the nation’s gun violence than simply reinstating an expired ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition, according to multiple people involved in the administration’s discussions.
A working group led by Vice President Biden is seriously considering measures backed by key law enforcement leaders that would require universal background checks for firearm buyers, track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, strengthen mental health checks, and stiffen penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors, the sources said.

^ I don't get the whole "It's our RIGHT!" argument. Just because something is your RIGHT, doesn't mean it's a bad idea. It's not like they are taking away the right of women to sunbathe topless in public ... oh actually, American women don't have that right, I'm thinking of Europe, land of the free! EU! EU! EU! FUCK YEAH!
- Typo, soz. Should read: "doesn't mean it's NOT a bad idea."********

Pretty sure American women can sunbathe in public. Same as in Europe.

All of this is so confusing. I've got a gun nut for a friend who is posting all these speeches and papers from hundreds of years ago by US founders, politicians, etc. and NONE OF THEM talk about anything remotely close to people actually killing other human beings, and guns being used to do so. It's just stuff about liberty, tyranny, etc. You know, the kind of stuff we all sit around thinking about constantly.
- <waterhouse
- I'd love to ask his opinion on other post-Bill-Of-Rights amendments, see if he has a problem with those being changed.mg33
- changed. You know, women voting, ending slavery, presidential term limits. Stuff that basically was a wise reaction to a new day and age.mg33

^ an old high school friend is posting similar stuff on FB. It's all so extreme, racing to 'they're trying to take our guns and our rights'...such hyperbole and isn't even reality. And I've yet had one person in this thread or elsewhere actually address the fact that no one is suggesting we take all guns away. It's embarrassing, really.

@ Utopian
I don't think people hate America. I think people are disappointed and frustrated with their dismissal of intelligent solutions. I think most Americans are appalled by the recent shootings but instead of doing something to reduce the numbers of guns (a logical solution) people think it's a good idea to get more. I don't get it.- I think there is alot of concern, in US which is true. Gov has symbiotic relationship with Corp, Banks. Just how it makes money. it corrupt so the loser is the people.yurimon
- money. People are pretty much out the loop on federal level which make its hegemony dangerous. it corruption dangerousyurimon
- is dangerous. I think people outside US are more collective. and few things they dont have.yurimon
- Prison is a growth industry,
Industrial military complex. and corruption on federal level greatest. its threat to regular people.yurimon - people.yurimon

Kind of interesting article. I remember a few years back I read about a design firm that worked with the military and they were developing a finger print scanner for guns. This way only the registered owner could fire it. This takes it a step further.

^ Have you seen Cosmopolis?

^ Seems like a lot of expensive technology to solve the problem - gps, optical sensing, etc.
"Dumber" technology could help limit people from taking/stealing and using guns. Maybe an electronic safety which can only be unlocked by a person wearing a wrist-worn device (wristwatch, bracelet, nike fuel band, etc). It would be specifically paired with 1 gun, or could be programed for multiple guns the same person owns. Only when the bracelet was within a few inches of the sensor would the safety unlock. Seems like I read something about this sometime ago.
Someone could steal the bracelet along with the gun– sure, but at least it would be one more layer of safety.
