    ok so legit hardware question

my 2013 MBP is dying to the point where i can use it but can't always rely on it to not die when it is in sleep mode. it's been 10 years and has served me well.

now i don't use laptops the way i used to - i don't work 50 hour weeks on design anymore, but i do personal projects (books primarily, also web / photo work) that require some power. i primarily use the affinity suite for this.

i also do sound art, but most production is in audacity, which is fairly lightweight as well.

so this all being said - what would the votes be for a new laptop investment between the new 15" air against a new MBP? there is a $1000 difference between what i would spec out each as, so i am leaning towards the air.

    • An Apple Silicon Air with full RAM will run circles around what you've got now, with less heat and better battery life. It's feasible for sure.evilpeacock
    • In our studio we use M1 Macbook Pros for the designers and M1 Macbook Airs for the account managers. Although they should be similar performance on paper..slappy
    • Airs struggle with some of the design files (heat management?). Also with both, the RAM is the weakest link, I would get 32gb+ as that still bonks out sometimesslappy
    • @slappy, that's what i've heard the main difference is - the fan / heat mgmt in the pro. i'm not worried about it now, but long term could be a factorcolin_s
    • A Pro is a safer longterm investment, and yes get as much RAM as you can; AS still only needs 1/2 what Intel does.evilpeacock

For how long can you wear a VR headset before it gets sweaty and cuts off blood circulation to your face?
Would you wear it to watch a movie at home, say 2 hours?

I wonder why there's such little interest in perfecting holographic technology instead...what happened to the future we were promised?

Looks insane to me. Can't wait to play games on an IMAX sized screen.... if could be arsed spending that ridiculous amount of money.

I am really curious to see how it works and I want to try it in real life, but I am definitely not interested in owning one

Has anyone here actually enjoyed using a VR headset? beyond the novelty of it?

I used it a couple of times and it's kind of cool for like a minute, then you feel so weird that you don't know what's going on in your real surroundings. With a group of people it's even weirder.

You also want to be able to enjoy things as a family or a group, movies, video games etc...are we suppose to gear out the whole family for 20k just to look like a bunch of morons pretend swimming in our living rooms?

my take is this a legacy project from the whole Metaverse hullabaloo from last year but they already threw too much at it to just pull the pin..

this feels like a giant mistake on Apples behalf.. especially on that price point..

Also the whole USA first release thing is so 2007 .. I get it, your an American company but your a global brand..

for sure interested to try it, there is no way in hell will be buying ..
at almost $5300 Australian .. I would sooner be buying a new laptop..

Also what's with that stupid battery pack?

    • also further to that, our kids have been at us to get the PSVR2 for the PS5 .. and we haven't as the last thing they need is MORE screen time.autoflavour
    • anyone know the time line of the homepod? vaguely recall it was a pet project of sorts and then without Jobs around (?) to axe or edit it, it became what it isSquiddy

    • maybe these could work as part of some immersive augmented experience gaming where groups of people play together and pay 29.99/ hour long game in some warehous_niko
    • but at 3500 US a pop I don't see how these will fly as a consumer products, way too niche._niko

    • that said, we have multiple home pods are they are awesome. we use them for everything from kitchen lights, turning off the internet for kids etc.. and musicautoflavour
  • inteliboy0

Sounds cynical. Complaining about a battery pack.

In uni we'd do class projects, create video installations using flash or director (yea that long ago) - super rudimentary motion tracking + projection mapping stuff. It blew our minds on where the future was going and not once did we complain about the bulky G4 towers, the shitty 480p cameras and projectors, and everything cabled together.

Sometimes I gotta throwback and remember what it was like back then to enjoy gadgets and crazy new tech...

Sucks that the apple goggles are insanely expensive, but it's also cool to see one of the worlds biggest companies do something so nerdy.

Also on the price, it'll come down in a few years. But not sure by how much, as it makes sense considering it's a full blown M2 computer + the lenses, sensors, cameras and high-res 4k screens in one.

    • I would hazard a guess that the required hardware will reduce as the software improves. A bit like how Tesla removed radar, and went to a visual system.slappy
    • They will always be silly expensive, but it's a luxury brand. There will be an android version along in a minute and or a consumer ms hololens.slappy
    • Maybe we don't need to be stuck in a VR/AR headset for more than two hours at a time. Can you plug it into the mains?Ianbolton

I for one am stoked about this. Like anything new esp from Apple, the product line will develop and only improve. It’s definitely a high end media consumption device, but surely has some insane potential. I look at this way 83 inch LG OLED TV or Apple Vision Pro. Probably a more fair comparison.

  • monospaced2

Final Cut Pro will be supported in Vision Pro at launch. There's an interesting creative use right out the gate, and not just gaming.

    • A filmmaker can actually experience how it would feel in a theater, while editing. Pretty cool :)monospaced
    • I actually think people are framing it as a VR, gaming, watching TV/film/porn but the “work” side of it could be epic. Even if a little sad where we’re goinghardhat

There are LOTs of use cases.

Patient 'distraction' in heath care is a good example.
    – CT scanners where people get claustrophobic.
    – EVERY kids dentist (and adults too!) is going to want one etc. etc.

    • Interesting. Have any existing headsets that have been around for several years been used for these use cases?monospaced
    • My kid's dentist just has a 14" monitor on the wall and that is more than enough for most kids it seems ;)monospaced
