As an atheist myself it bugs me when I see massive, public religious symbols forced into my face, and I'm glad I live in a place where that doesn't happen much. I can only imagine the amount of hypogritical outrage and disgust among these very Christians if an Islamic group put up their massive symbol over the freeway in their town too.

And whhipp, this isn't hate and bigotry at work here, so stop calling names. :D

- a moon and star. i love astronomy.CanHasQBN
- the cross is also astrological in origin (later, the crucifix was just convenient)monospaced
- if this is in a country where it is the main religion of its culture, then no. And yes people can have their symbols up too.whhipp

I'm all for religious freedom, but of course there must be equal time for Satanists, Naked Ram Das followers, devotees of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and of course the dedicated worshippers of the Burning Man... and anyone who would like to recreate the nativity scene below...

Most holidays weren't even started by chrisitians but they tied their biblical happenings into seasonal celebrations, from the fall to winter to spring, then capitalism got in there and attached buying a bunch of shit to celebrate. Holidays are what you make them. I find myself gravitating towards all the fun religious holidays, hindu, buddhist, muslim, chrisitan, native american pagan etc Im fucking always partying!

- Pretty sure you're talking about how they reappropriated pagan celebrationsmonospaced
- yup! People need to see the seasons as they are. christianity aside and find their own celebration.74LEO

And what year is it!
What a fuckin joke that is!
The best thing to come out of this 12.21.12 thing is maybe people will start to follow some type of lunar calendar instead of a calendar around the birth of a God's son!- 12:12:12.... what about .............. hmm.... Ezekiel 23:20?!?!?vaxorcist
- and two of those months were added by roman emperors.zarkonite
- lunar cycle doesn't match solar cycle, that's why you need an extra 1/4 day a year.monNom
- so a lunar calendar would drift and eventually have xmas in summer.monNom
- nommon thats why you christ believers have the gregorian calendarteh

Why do we need government and public schools sponsoring religious events? I thought conservatives wanted government to be eliminated as much as possible, and that it's always better when the private sector or individuals handle things. So let non-government groups handle the religious stuff.
- there was no government sponsorship. it was a display on public land... oh no!whhipp

As a spiritual person I see the celebration of decorating a pine tree with lights and decorations. I see it as a thankfulness for these pine trees that continue to grow, keep our air clean and protect us from the sun and cold all through the winter, but some how a specific religious group adopted a tradition from the dutch and ruined it. A general seasonal celebration has turned into an unnecessary religious war.

...what all you cackling ninnies should be really incensed about is how christmas now starts in october in north america and how it's forced down our throats as a marketable product by corporate 'america'.
i have no religious ties but i really like xmas, and what it represents. i don't like to be bombarded by 'xmas'... before halloween.
nowadays, by the time xmas time rolls around it's like a bad hangover.
the end.
- this is my war on xmas... i'm talking to you starbuck's... going full xmas in late oct you sonna va b*tchprophetone

These passive aggressive religious fanatics need to finally shed themselves of their ignorant beliefs. Just because they've shielded themselves by acts of kindness and faith, doesn't make what they do derogatory when they hold a cross up in your face. Think of all the Jews they offend, when they put up a cross. Christianity condemns the Jews as Nazis themselves. But at the same time, any Judaist religion just propagates a story concocted by a Jew. You either have to believe in science or religion. fact or myth. I'm all up for starting a new beginning with these new traditions!

"Christmas starts in October..."
Not in Canada. We take Remembrance Day very seriously and there's a shitstorm whenever a retailer tries to switch into Xmas mode before Nov 11.
