Last week I realized I am the fattest I’ve been in my life. BMI 28. I’ve lost weight and got fit before but it definitely gets harder with age. Pandemic staying home doesn’t help.
I decided to do 100 days of: reduced carb, low-sugar, calorie-deficit.
Today is day 7/100. Lost over five pounds already!!! I’m constantly hungry.
- Try to be healthy, exercise, eat right foods but hate being constantly hungry...last thing I ever want to do. that being said....I could lose weightdkoblesky
- that's healthy to do. keep it stable. sometimes the hungry only means thirsty, so water helps to adjust your perception.uan
- Yeah I’m drinking so much water and herbal tea now. I’m hydrated AFnb
- IMO if you’re 35+ You can’t lose significant weight without spending some time being hungry. You should be hungry at least 3 times a day!nb

Spent the most of the last couple of years completely off the rails, drinking like a fish, eating ridiculous amounts of junk food. Hit my all time high weight of 280lbs in March then suddenly just started shedding without even trying (60lbs in less than 6 months). Eventually I decided I should probably talk to doctor.
I got some blood work done, and I had an A1c of 12.8, fasting BS 350+. Cholestorol and triglycerides through the roof. I was diagnosed with the diabeetus. Call me Wilford Fucking McBrimley.
Anyway, I cut out all beer and sugary shit, started buying and making desserts and snacks using erythritol, and only eat whole grains. My eA1c is now at a 5.9 (<7 is considered "controlled"). My next checkup for official results is in a couple of weeks.
The first couple of weeks after diagnosis I was honestly devastated, but I've come to realize this was probably one of the best things that could have happened to me to get my fucking act together. I haven't felt this good in years.
- I'm sorry to hear that you have been through so much in recent years. But I'm happy to hear that you are making a strong come back...stay strong, stay well.utopian
- Nice work. Had a similar experience of dropping weight suddenly and was initially diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. After 4 years of trying to manage it with medsmort_

- Apparently misdiagnosis is common for adult onset type 1 diabetes. Something to be aware of.mort_

- Oh wow. Thankfully no insulin for me, just a general "get yo shit together". It's nuts how many little ailments can be attributed to diabetes though,5timuli

Decided to get rid of all refined carbs and sugar and lost between 20 and 25 lbs since October. What most surprised me is the amount of energy that I was missing! Now it's just toning and maintaining. Single life at my age has me working for my money. xD

Got back to good habits on January 1st and have gone from 175 to 164.5 in 2 1/2 months. Regular exercise with weights and Peloton, and a really good full body superset fat burning working have been great.
I also did a DEXA body composition scan and RMR test back in December, which helped me properly recalibrate macros and better understand maintenance calories and deficit calories for fat burning. Interestingly, that showed that my maintenance calories should be around 2,100 calories per day. I usually was eating around 1,700.
For January I stuck to 2,100 and actually lost around 5 lbs that way just avoiding sugar and eating what I needed to fuel my workouts. Then went to 1,700 until hitting my goal this week, now back at 2,100 and around 175g of protein a day. Also introduced carbs back in - rice, oatmeal, and wheat bread mostly, which I was avoiding when doing slow carb.
The nutritionist I met with really stressed that I probably haven't been eating right to fuel daily energy and workouts, and I've felt a lot better with that stuff back in AS LONG AS it doesn't make me crave sugar.
Lastly, gave up coffee and all caffeine this week, for like the fifth time in my life. Longest I've gone was 3 years... I never learn my lesson. Main problem for me with caffeine is skin issues. Caffeine exacerbates stress which exacerbates cortisol which is a massive problem for my skin and avoiding acne, which completely sucks to have as a 43 year old man. I'm also just a nicer person without caffeine in me, more calm, more even-keeled. Now I'm just doing rooibos tea and mint tea all day, and starting each day with a homemade smoothie that has kale, pineapple, mango, bananas, flaxseed, chia seeds, avocado, coconut water, and protein powder. About 440 calories and it's all good for me.

Tried to pick up running this year (can't do much else). I've got runner's knee (left), plantar fasciitis pain (left foot), pain in my right hip, which don't know what is. Granted my bones were not prepared for asphalt running and with some time I would eventually adapt, but... Fuck running, always hated it.

I was feeling super flabby and sluggish last weekend, so have been eating a single egg for breakfast and then pure plant based salads for other means. No sugar, no bread, no grains, no booze.
After 5 days I feel fucking ace, and am considering this as a long term switch in my habits, and having a single (responsible) cheat day.
Anyone ever have success with this type of simple plan?

Long reply, haven't posted here in a while.
Last month I signed up for www.joinzoe.com to do an at-home blood glucose test along with a blood test and stool sample during a two week period.
Don't know if anyone has seen Zoe - I found it in a Facebook ad - but their main value props are:
----
- Powered by the world’s most in-depth nutrition study by scientists from Massachusetts General Hospital, Stanford & Harvard
- We take a holistic approach to understand how your body works. We use the most advanced tests and cutting-edge science available to help you understand how your body works so you can reduce dietary inflammation and improve your gut health naturally.
Based on the tests used in PREDICT, our at-home test kit can provide comprehensive insights into your biology, covering the gut microbiome and markers of dietary inflammation (including both blood sugar and fats).
----Before starting the Zoe program I also did a hair follicle food sensitivity test with https://www.checkmybodyhealth.co…... My skin had been breaking out way more than usual and I started to read more about inflammation and gut health and those impacts on acne and skin health.
The food sensitivity tests revealed high sensitivity to a lot of things I was eating regularly: black beans, bananas, anything dairy (which I've largely avoided anyways), cheese, whey protein (which I've always known was bad for me) as well as a lot of wheat-based things, and also apples and mushrooms. I started an elimination diet to avoid those things, skin started clearing up a bit.
The Zoe results take a while to get back, but when you get them, it's a ridiculously comprehensive breakdown of foods that impact blood sugar response, blood fat response, and gut health. You then get an app from them that includes your individual scores for those three aspects, and then the scores for meals and individual foods are calculated against those.
With the results, my blood sugar, blood fat, and gut health were all poor. The point of the program is to help you make better decisions about what truly effects each person; I've been tracking macros and calories for 6 years and this is the first time I've ever done anything this unique and specific to ME.
I've cross-referenced my favorite low-sensitivity foods with the high-ranking foods in Zoe, and have lately felt more energetic, less hungry, and best of all, I'm not even tracking calories anymore after six years of relentless dedication to that. Some days eating healthy I get close to 2,500 calories (way more than usual) and some days I'm lower, but I'm focusing more on how I feel, my mood, etc. Skin has completely cleared up. Stress is down a bit, and though a ton of stuff is off the list for me, the Zoe program doesn't aim to fully eliminate any particular food; it just helps you make better choices when combining foods to balance out the blood sugar, blood fat, and gut health response.
If any of you are interested in something that is incredibly unique to your body and metabolism, check out www.joinzoe.com. I was fascinated by their scientific approach - it's not BS. I wish health programs covered the cost of this because it would pave the way for proactive nutritional planning unlike anything else, just requires you to stick with it.
