    Explain like I'm 5:

Why did Musk HAVE to buy Twitter at all? I keep seeing articles saying that he had to go through with the purchase. WHY?

    • My guess is power and influence. Twitter is a huge platform for influence in general, and it gives him power by owning it and all that data. My 2cmonospaced
    • 1) I sign a legally binding contract/agreement to purchase Twitter. 2) He faced multiple lawsuits 3) His child like ego made him do it 4) He's a cuntutopian
    • He can control the flow of (mis)information on a global level which is exactly what narcissistic rich losers live for.monospaced
    • But he didn’t have to buy it. He doesn’t have to do any of this.monospaced
    • Oh right. Yes, he made the offer. It influenced the shareholders. He’s responsible for going through because of what it did to the bottom line I think.monospaced
    • 1) He bought a 9% stake in twitter initially which got him a seat on the Board of Directorsjonny_quest_lives
    • Board of Directors Terms would limit him from amassing more ownership shares during his tenure so he opted not to accept a Board Seatjonny_quest_lives
    • timing gets fuzzy cuz it was like a matter of weeks but he offered to buy twitter at $54.20 a share in cashjonny_quest_lives
    • people speculated he made the offer hoping to get investor backing... Twitter Board sensing weakness as welljonny_quest_lives
    • as it was an overvalued offer especially based on their own revenue metrics accepted as it was a no brainer at that pricejonny_quest_lives
    • so they locked him in a poison pill scenario... he waved due diligence for some weird reasonjonny_quest_lives
    • no backing materialized post Twitter accepting or if it did it fell apart because Elon said he was pausing the deal cuz of bots to user ratiojonny_quest_lives
    • elon was always on the hook for 50% of the dealjonny_quest_lives
    • Twitter stock tanked cuz of the shenanigans on Elon's part $54.20 per share is much better than $38 the twitter board approves the offer because as some wouldjonny_quest_lives
    • say in this channel "business is business" elon at this point has to conclude the deal or pay $1billion to opt out or try to wiggle out of the deal in courtjonny_quest_lives
    • Elon's going to be Elon... but his lawyer's eventually get through to him so he decides to go through with the deal. largely because he found some silentjonny_quest_lives
    • partners one of which is Saudi Prince Alwaleed.jonny_quest_lives
    • So Elon and his group of like minded friends plan is to restructure, go private, blacbox the finacials for a few years than dump Elon's new Broken Birdjonny_quest_lives
    • on another group of suckers via IPO on the stock market in a few years... Now the Jury's out if this will work or not but we shall see.jonny_quest_lives
    • Elon Musk beat out the next highest offer which was $0nb
    • He got power and money drunk when Tesla was at all time highs and markets going up crazy. When it tanked he started to realize he made a stupid expensive offerNBQ00
    • sounds like a dare he couldn't back outpango
    • He didn’t. He made offer out of nowhere, then signed a contract where he agreed that if he backs out he pays them a huge fee for wasted time.nb
    • He changed his mind and wanted special treatment: to be allowed to back out without paying the fee he agreed to pay.nb
    • He chose to buy it instead of losing the cancellation fee. The world’s richest man was not forced to buy a company. It’s absurd.nb
    • Why don't you ask him directly on twitter?
      Instead of wildly guessing

Is it not possible for the twitter staff to leave, borrow some cash, and make an alternative twitter?

There's plenty of 'twitter-like' apps on those learn to code courses, can't be that hard... a bit of ruby on rails, react and an AWS server.

A catchy logo/brand name... and here's something novel - they could even try to make a return on the investment! Right?

    • Sure. Trump did it lolmonospaced

    • All social platforms have a lifespan. We're seeing that with Meta now. Maybe Musk saves Twitter, maybe it's like everyone that tried to save MySpace.formed
    • But yeah, there are already new ones emerging. Like many, I am just exhausted with them all, just like politics. Let'em die.formed
    • QBN will outlive them all!! Honestly, I'd donate some to keep this alive and give the devs a little reward. It's remarkable it's been going for over 20 years.formed

I can admit when I'm wrong and I was wrong about @elonmusk.

No one was more skeptical than I - but his decisions this week have shown he really *can* put a social network on the path to unprecedented success.

    Specifically Mastodon.

Apparently Twitter is losing 4M per day and has billions in debt. At some point all of those people would be fired. What's with the witch hunt?

Why are twitter employees sacred all of a sudden?

    • Twitter losing 4M/day (if that is indeed true, I don't trust Elon to be truthy) is kind of an own goal on his part.Continuity
    • They're not. People just hate on Elon Musk for various reasons and he is very vocal. Internet drama as palimpsest said...grafician
