One of the best articles about the world cup :
I don't know what the result was this Tuesday between Argentina and Croatia in the World Cup in Qatar - I have to deliver this column first - but I do know one thing for sure: I know that, at match time, there was a man walking through a park in a city in the Pampas, in the sunshine, accompanied by two dogs. Here's the thing: my two brothers turned my father into the Anticábala: they prohibited him from watching the national team's matches. It's his superstitious contribution to Argentina winning. My father is not interested in football, so not watching them doesn't bother him. Last Friday, when the Argentina national team played against the Netherlands, he was watching The Godfather II on Netflix. At one point, because the subtitles weren't coming on, he fiddled with the remote control - he's a chemical engineer, but he doesn't understand that device - he unintentionally switched off Netflix and the match suddenly appeared before his eyes. In that minute, the Netherlands scored their second goal. One of my brothers appeared in a flurry, certain that the disaster was the result of my father watching the match. And indeed he was. So, to avoid trouble, he sent him away: he sent him for a walk in the park. And that man who ran away from home to go looking for gold in Brazil when he was 17, who introduced us to Argentina in a vehicle loaded with weapons in the middle of the dictatorship, who endured my mother's agony absorbing the horror so that we wouldn't swallow it, put the dogs in his truck and left. He didn't calculate that the match would last so long: 10 minutes of extra time, plus half an hour, plus penalties. He walked in the sun - it was 40 degrees - until he was exhausted. But he got them to win. So this is my only certainty: yesterday, Tuesday, at match time, a man went for a walk with his dogs, in the sunshine, because his children still believe he can change the world. That's what a father is. Someone who does not hesitate to fulfil, in the name of a love he will never confess, the absurd extravagance.
- Left the table to get some more beers, then England missed the second penalty and that was it. If I didn't left...grafician
- Not to mention by then all predictions were 100% but one tiny break and the perfect score card was done

If Morocco beat France, Argentina could go the whole the World Cup without having to play any team in the top 7 of the world.
- Would love it if Morocco went and won it.zardoz
- That would be amazing!Chimp
- Well, if the conspiracy theorists are to be believed, the Morocco win at the finals is already bought and paid for. Just waiting to be collected.Continuity
- I refuse to believe Morocco could beat France, especially this team, unless it comes down to penalty kicks.
But they sure will make it near impossible to scorespl33nidoru

- France we’re lucky they paid the ref more.Chimp
- France’s first goal should never have happened as it was a foul. MChimp
- Does France even exist? I've never been to France? Who's to say it's not another conspiracy?palimpsest
- Lichtenstein. Now, THAT's got to be an utter fiction.Continuity
- Does football even exist?Chimp
- France is a virtual country created by Qatar. They knew it would look suspicious if they won the cup.palimpsest
- So they invested a lot of money to convince people that France was real, that way they can get the cup without any repercusions.palimpsest
- Well, Qatar own Neymar, lock, stock, and barrel, see how that ended up for him!Continuity
- @Chimp
They got you thinking they paid the ref but France isn't even real.
Wake up!palimpsest - Now expecting there to be a good discount on Bordeaux and Brie next week at my local supermarket.shapesalad

- The law is that the the ball is in play "if the curvature of the ball is over the line", irrespective of how small a part of it is.Beeswax
- @Beeswax, true! I wonder, after looking at this, the rule should be changedChimp
- It would be the same problem, there will always be a limit. Some people will always be on the other side of the line.palimpsest

Yeah, I don't think we'll be seeing any upsets/surprises here.
Spain 2:0 Costa Rica at 21"
- Jesus. If there's a team at this WC just there to make up the numbers, it's Costa Rica.Continuity
- 7:0Miesfan
- This is really agonising to watch.Continuity
- CR bless them, they're doing the best they can (which is limited), but it's clear they've lost the will to live.Continuity
- spain was luckyBeeswax
- Missed the game, I was joking about Brazil yesterday but it's not fun to see a team lose by so much. Unless it's Italy of course.spl33nidoru
- Also not fun seeing an official needlessly add 8 minutes' extra time on a match like this.Continuity
- And actually, it *was* fun watching Brazil getting curb-stomped like that. They need to have egos put in check every so often.Continuity
- Costa rica were totally curb-stomped. Almost felt sorry for themIanbolton

LOL, Qatar are completely out of their depth, here.
- Qatar 0:2 Ecuador at only 31'.
This is going to be fun!Continuity - Can’t wait for the Dutch to put 7 past them.Chimp
- Holy fuck, Qatar are exceptionally bad at football. They look like a bunch of 6 year olds who've never touched a ball in their lives.Continuity

All set for more England disappointment, and despite ... Qatar ... I'm still looking forward to it.
I posted this a few years ago in documentaries, and an excellent one it is. A far cry from what Ambassador Thick from Thick 'n' Thin has been blathering on about. Still highly recommended.

A better ending for this topic
- Hayzilla2
An unbelievably good final. It may have just have hooked my 6yr old boy for life. Mbappe and Messi are his favourite players and to see them put it in the net 7 times between them was the icing on the cake.
Fuck FIFA. Long live football!
- Maybe your boy will help England finally win a WC? ;)Continuity
- He's very good at football actually but he's already 6 mate. Everyone at that final was already signed for a top club by then. His career is already over ;-)Hayzilla

Well, back to boring old club football.
At least we've got the Euros and the Copa América to look forward to, before we're back here in a new thread in 3 1/2 years.
