Today is the anniversary of the first interview I ever did with a band for The Garden of Earthly Delights in March 1991. A guy called Tony White who was then the programme controller for CRMK Radio arranged for a visiting punk band called Citizen Fish featuring ex members of Subhumans to come into the studio at Crownhill to record an interview. This was a couple of months before I even started the show proper as I didn't even know how to use the desk but Tony set me up with someone to handle the recording whilst I sat and chatted with the band, there is a cassette of this in my cupboard somewhere...
What was REALLY cool though was that they played their only Milton Keynes show in a community centre literally at the end of the street where I lived. It meant that I was able to mosh & get completely rat arsed as I only had a few yards to stagger home, happy daze!

Smash Mouth "All Star" but about QBN (thanks ChatGPT)

    (Verse 1)
Somebody once told me that QBN's where it's at,
With a design blog so weird, you never know what's coming next,
It's the place where the misfits go to share their latest craze,
From the avant-garde to the absurd, it's a circus in many ways.

    (Chorus)
    Hey now, you're on QBN,
Where the freaks come out to play,
It's a design blog like no other,
With a community that's here to stay.

    (Verse 2)
There's a guy from outer space who's sharing his designs,
And a cat who's into typography, it's really quite divine,
A robot who's got a blog, he's always posting something new,
And a DJ who's got a thing for vintage fonts, it's all so true.

    (Chorus)
    Hey now, you're on QBN,
Where the freaks come out to play,
It's a design blog like no other,
With a community that's here to stay.

    (Bridge)
    You might think it's strange,
But that's just the way we roll,
    We're a bunch of misfits,
With a passion for design and soul.

    (Chorus)
    Hey now, you're on QBN,
Where the freaks come out to play,
It's a design blog like no other,
With a community that's here to stay.

    (Outro)
    So if you're feeling weird,
And you've got some design to share,
    Come on down to QBN,
    'Cause we really do care.

How do you teach someone good taste?

My situation is getting difficult as I'm looking for a part-time job till 36 hours max. for the last for months in Leipzig where we moved in September.

I've already sent 20 applications as graphic designer, multimedia designer, web designer, even as unexperienced UX/UI designer and the craziest of all, one to work as mail man!

    Yes, you've read that right.

Today I went to the unemployment center and they suggested that if I would like to keep my freelance status I should maybe go work for DHL moving packages at the Airport!

    ...

    • Maybe I should have invested more in my design career, not being anti-agency instead of doing streetart and trying to get somewhere with it and giving workshopsoey_oey
    • After 6 months practically without work and no real network in a new city my humble savings almost disappeared...damn!oey_oey
    • I feel for you oey... "Freedom" sometimes is painfull af.OBBTKN
    • If life as a freelance can be defined as "freedom" :(

      Good luck in your search!!
      OBBTKN
    • If I lived nearby an airport I'd be more than happy to move packages all day. So tired of clicking mouse buttons and staring at a screen all my life.shapesalad
    • I would say, do it, go for the airport job - why? Because you do it for 6 months, it builds a buffer, it takes the pressure off.shapesalad
    • In your spare time, you need to go monk mode - cut all distractions, tv, etc. And focus. You don't need a big goal, you need to build a good habit.shapesalad
    • The habit is building a great portfolio, polishing skills, building a social media presence, networking online/real life.shapesalad
    • Chip away at it, 90mins per day.... in a year you'll be closer to where you want to be in life.shapesalad
    • Once you got a smart clear Portfolio site, email all design studios in Leipzig offering to take the load for them when things get busy, freelance style.shapesalad
    • Right now is a hard time for all design services, as the sectors biggest client is the tech sector - which is being killed with layoffs and capital tightening.shapesalad
    • Ride it out with something like the airport job, at least you'll be so physically worn out that sitting at computer after work will be appealing.shapesalad
    • <3 shapesalad, that is so true, I'm just really tired after one year parental leave and another year supporting my partner in her full time job and PhDoey_oey

"When Twitter fired half of its employees in 2022, and most tech giants followed suit, I wasn’t surprised. In fact, I think little will change for those companies. After being employed in the tech sector for years, I have come to the conclusion that most people in tech don’t work. I don’t mean we don’t work hard; I mean we almost don’t work at all. Nada. Zilch. And when we do get to do some work, it often brings low added value to the company and its customers. All of this while being paid an amount of money some people wouldn’t even dream of."

    https://emaggiori.com/employed-i…

    • You get that in big advertising agencies. I did three months of nothing. Turns out I was a line item on the client invoice to bump profits.shapesalad
    • Eg tell client the task requires 3 designers. Get a freelancer in at £325 per day, invoice for designer at £450 pd to client, keep the difference.shapesalad

There should be a logo/mark/whatever called "made by a human", to put on non-ai made illustrations/images/designs etc.

    • #NFTpalimpsest
    • #BrilloBoxpalimpsest
    • You can NFT AI-made stuff, so how's that an alternative?jagara
    • Yes, i used NFT as a verb.jagara
    • Just joking, there's no need for NFTs at all. A lot people already sign their work. Looks like you were looking more for an authenticity certificate...palimpsest
    • ... that's why NFTs came to mind.palimpsest
    • Well, "AI artists" sometimes sign their "work". Just something stating that this was made by a human.jagara
    • Yes, so what's the solution?palimpsest
    • Or even, where is the problem?palimpsest
    • I guess like organic food has https://tinyurl.com/…jagara
    • If you can't tell the difference between an AI & a human made image is there a difference in the way you experience it? Is a human made img healthier for you?palimpsest
    • I have posted human made images in the AI QBN threads and nobody has noticed.palimpsest
    • If you're paying for images and want to pay extra for a human generated image I can understand the labels. But as a simple spectator I personally don't care.palimpsest
    • And if we're really interested in fair trade & organic work I don't think many humans would pass that label.palimpsest
    • You don't see the value in trying to distinguish human made and ai made work? In the sense that this technology might rob people of their livelyhood?jagara
    • And also devalue human work?jagara
    • Yes, I see the value in human work that's why I made the distinction between paying for work and experiencing the work.palimpsest
    • I might not taste the difference in fair trade coffee but I'm willing to pay for it. I only see an interest if there's a monetary transaction.palimpsest
    • And if you can be replaced by a machine it's up you to find that added "value" to your work if you think it's work worth pursuing.palimpsest
    • I think people need to be protected not jobs. For me, a job is a mean not an end.palimpsest
    • I'm not paying extra for fair trade so the coffee picker gets to keep his job but so he gets less exploited.palimpsest
    • I would like him to be in a co-op or even not have to pick coffee, I really don't care about his coffee picking.palimpsest
    • Continuing with the coffee analogy. The only person I think is key in my coffee experience is the roaster. They have to choose the right coffee and roasting.palimpsest
    • The roasting itself is done by machines but the roaster sets the parameters to match the taste they have in mind.palimpsest
    • The barista is just there for the theater of it and can be replaced by a machine as well.palimpsest

I had a dream in which I went to a bar where I met a couple of people I knew, asked for some sausages, like, it was a sausage bar, and then they did a ritual for me through which they turned me into a deity of the bar.

The ritual consisted of strangers throwing alcohol at me and tying me up with leather straps around my cock.

Once the initiation was finished, they told me that they were going to help me in my biggest artistic intervention and they began to paint pictures and walls and shit; meanwhile my dream was moving away and I started to see a house in a corner, where my friends and I were creating the best work of art ever made. It got to the point where I cried from how excited I was and then I woke up and wrote this.
