Tennessee judge orders baby's name changed from "Messiah"
“The word Messiah is a title and it’s a title that has only been earned by one person and that one person is Jesus Christ,” said Tennessee judge Lu Ann Ballew of Cocke County.
- by this logic... I guess parents probably want to avoid the name Jesus? No more 'Hey Suse'?PonyBoy
- so fucked. this is how we know judges opinions don't mean shit. call that baby messiah foreveralbums

from above:
“The rest of us pay so much more in taxes because clergy pay so much less. If these churches -- which are accountable to no one in government yet get so many favors -- are allowed to engage in tax-exempt politicking, it would be the ruination of our democracy.”

- Only weak minded need to stroke the ego this much on the expense of others. why is he Anthropomorphizing god?yurimon
- he's not anthromoporphizing god, not when the book literally says we were created in his imagemonospaced
- also, he impregnated a human, so he must be the same species, can't blame Christfags for thinking god's a manmonospaced

"There is a true, important, though harsh-sounding point to be made about the origins of the major religions influential in today's world: that they derive ultimately from the superstitions of illiterate herdsmen living several thousand years ago. That is a mere fact, not a rhetorical flourish."

For many, spirituality is a powerful component of their make-up. Just as there are those that can extract profound meaning from music, literature, nature or art, some are born with a deep connection, either inward or outward, to the intangible.
No one is the same and we are all born with varying degrees of conviction, one way or the other. Feeling superior because you have more or less of connection to spirituality is like bragging about your height—you've done nothing to acquire it and you're a fool to believe your position on the scale is the preferable one.
- true, but no fucker wants to be a short arse.Wolfboy
- uhhh, if you'r eimplying that spirituality is on a scale that we inherit genetically, then you're a fucking retardmonospaced
- "born with various degrees of conviction" ... you've got to be fucking kidding me.... do you even science, bro?monospaced
- Ben, you are arrogant to the point of asinine.melq
- Anyway, even though I spelled it out pretty well in the first para., I should have used a non-physical trait for the comparison.melq
- ...comparison. Substitute "sense of humor" for "height" for the remedial class.melq
- You're still trying to say that we're born with a level of "conviction" as if were a genetic trait. That's ridiculous still.monospaced
- And what you're positing, mono, is that without guidance from elders, no spirituality would develop in a personlocustsloth
- Which has already been disproved by the fact that there are any religions at alllocustsloth
- To simplify, spirituality is not mutually exclusive when it comes to nature or nurturelocustsloth
- Many mental disorders are genetic or otherwise physical in origin.i_monk
- I'm stating the opposite actually, locustloth. I am stating that spirituality is built into all living things.monospaced
- And that no one person is more spiritual than the other by birth. But that's just what I'm saying.monospaced
- And, perhaps then, no one person is more creative than the other by birth? How about more intuitive? We're all blank slates with the exact same recipe of inclinations and desires?melq
- ...slates with the exact same recipe of inclinations and desires? Absurd.melq
- The actual point I was trying to make was that whether someone has zero spiritual connection or is devout in her own beliefs or is anywhere in between, none of it makes you a better or worse person—just different. Nothing wrong with that.melq
- ...own beliefs or is anywhere in between, none of it makes you a better or worse person—just different. Nothing wrong with that.melq
- We're not all blank slates at birth. But, I'm with mono on this one. >waterhouse
- If we're born with varying degrees of "conviction," I'd prefer that "conviction" be turned towards therapy.waterhouse
- With therapy, there is scripture, there is wisdom, even a weekly appointment.waterhouse
