blueOne: I find some common ground in that spirituality with regard to finite life is inseperably connected to matter. i.e. the brain is the physical apparatus for the immaterial "mind". Without the physical apparatus (think: radio and radio signals) it doesn't function.

acescence: go and study hermeneutics and then we could have an intelligent and potentially fruitful discussion.

Matter self organizing into life..ah, well the mathmatecal foundations of this are pretty far along on the proven side, with the work of Stuart Kauffman and his self-organizing catalytic sets, and many others. Sure it's a theory, but I would posit you rconcept of a godhead is as much a theory, with less mathmitcal proof..
Again, I'm not going to pursue this particular line of debate with you anymore man. others can, and I am sure will. I respect where you're coming from, but again I think your view of science is too narrow, and you have soem fundamental misunderstanding of the process.

Woody what I meant was the bible says that it is the infallible word of god. That god hates fags things was just "a spirited jab" at flagellum. Childish, I know, but his smarmy attitude pisses me off a lot of times.
Religion has always been tied to politics, so it does hurt people. Do you think suicide bombers would kill themselves over economics?

On the non-science stuff:
Flagellum, correct me if I am wrong about your views of Christianity:
The NT trumps everything written in the OT essentially bc of the new contract that JC brings.
agree or disagree?

I've found the writings of mathematician and statistician, William Dembski to be compelling. Especially his Specified Complexity thesis. The problem with immaterial blind causes is again, the problem of specificity, which rears it's purposive head in all of biochemistry. We just can't get away from it.

blueOne: disagree. I would put it that the New Testament "completes" the OT and that a properly applied hermeneutic would be to interpret the OT in light of the NT. We begin with the NT and move backwards, to properly understand the foreshadowing of the OT.
I don't believe that salvation was ever achieved more than one way: faith in Christ. Even in the OT. Which is why God gave the Mosaic law. It was to demonstrate that people could not achieve the perfect standard which God requires. It pointed to the coming Christ. Salvation has always been achieved by faith in the savior. This is why the OT says that "Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness."

Obviously the NT was retrofitted to fulfill the promises of the OT.

(Oct 5 06, 09:22)i have better things to do with my time than study the interpretration of fairy tales, but it all seems pretty clearly spelled out to me when i read it. so does god make occasional exceptions to his all-loving policy? how do you jibe your version of christianity with the law that is actually spelled out in the bible you claim to follow?

Mimio: that's Arguments against the Bible 101 and of course I don't buy it. There are far too many fulfilled prophecies regarding people, places, events, locations, appearances etc... that can't be explained away so simply. And again, we have the testimony of secular historians like Josephus and the dizzying accuracy and reliability of the NT records. These links demonstrate some of them:

ascenece: God's love does not mean he is permissive of evil. God's love does not negate his righteousness wrath against a sinful, narcisistic humans. After all, we deserve his wrath (the same Bible teaches this) and it's only thru the loving sacrifice of his son that we freely receive his favor. The Law of the OT pointed to the individual's need for a savior. It demonstrated God's wrath and his requirement of perfection.
Both those requirements were satisfied on the cross.

The bible is riddled with illogic, vengence, and violence. Just pick it up and open it to any page. I don't get it. It's insanity in fact. Revelations according to the rad feminists is the ultimate patriarchal nuclear holocuaustic self fulfilling prophecy. I believe these Christians, Muslims, and Jews will not stop until this world is is nuclear wasteland. While people like Flagellum smile and talk about peacful sprituality, the true meaing of religion and all. The real everyday workings of these people is NOT translating that way. Do you beleive in Revelatoins? So when the world comes to and end you are going to stand around and be like 'It's God's will'. Insane! Absolute mass neurosis!

dobs,
more and more i wish you were in new york so we can go out drinkin'. I wish we discuss this over pints.
I definitely agree that religon has a role in politics, i beleive it's there b/c of power as opposed to belief.
You mentioned do i think suicide bombers would do it over economics. Actually i think economics is the underlying reason in most wars. If you look back in history, Nazism, American Civil War, list really goes on and on. These conflicts are usually due to an econiomic collapse.
Something that eats away at me with the issue in the middle eat and africa, is that these are very rich nations because of thier natural resources, but the people are so poor. It makes me ill.
