correction: the new V8 is actually lighter than the previous TTV6.
this ain't yer 'amurican' V8 lady... ;)
kind of funny to hear about questions of sub-frame failures/re-welding. hell, what kind of car would you be coming from that would even have that as something to think about w/ Audi?
UrS fo' life.... ;)

Land Rover? *evil laughter
;)

oh right... forgot about that.
yeah- guess these things are not of concern when you have 'real' engineers working on structural integrity...
*ducks

Looks like the Mitsubishi Eclipse...which is not good.

Heard from the LR shop that same day:
- Oi chap, where this funny-lookin bolt go eh?
- Dunno guv'nor. P'haps the geahbox, know what aye mean?
- I think it's holdin' the subframe togeva or sumink.
- Ah never you mind tossah, let's hit the pub eh!
- Lor luv'a duck! Aye!

lol madirish! and thanks jox.
actually, the subframe issue has occurred in bmw and to a much lesser degree, some porsches. we have a 328ci which has also been modified and been driven like it was stolen, and a couple of years ago the subframe weakened and threatened to separate from the diff mount. there's a lawsuit going on w/bmw since they won't repair it and it wasn't really cheap to fix.
still love that car but disappointed that they'd produce it assuming that it would only take a certain degree of stress. i know it was really only a problem w/the e46 generation and it wouldn't turn me off from getting an m roadster or coupe necessarily.
not prepared to buy right away, but once in a while i get car crazy and can't stop looking and comparing!

what's funny is considering the pounding the land rover has received, we've had no issues which aren't directly related to me, say, pounding the rear diff on a rock or landing on a slider hard enough to loosen the fillings in my teeth. lol!
the poor reputation of land rovers really applies to the p38 (range rover model) and discovery series 1...they have issues like all cars but with good maintenance they're fantastic and can take a crazy amount of stress. their performance off-road is always amazing.

wow- really interesting sputnik. 328's are suposed to be bombproof, pretty much. never heard of that on any btu damn- that is horrible.
come into the Audi water- it's warm... it will talk pretty to you and hold you tight....
...with Quattro, of course. ;)

(Jul 26 07, 08:16)i actually guffawed!
to be fair we may have contributed to the bmw's issues by replacing some parts (like rubber bushings) which were designed to wear out frequently but whose purpose was possibly to amortize stress on the subframe. but still, it sucked.
other than that, it has been such a great car i don't think we'd get rid of it. if we got something else (like a yummy audi) we'd turn the bmw into a track car or something.
- madirish0
now we are getting somewhere! :)
track car- yes.
stealth q-ship for daily- yes.
installing polyurethane bushings to stiffen the chassis, but maybe over-stressing sub-frame mounts (rivited, tac-welds only) by doing
so- ...... maybe? ;)
- -sputnik-0
yep, right on!
at least now that the whole thing's been reinforced we can forget about it.

I'm not impressed with the new m3, I'd rather have the 335, I'm a tt guy

lately i've been thinking a lot about audi rs4s/rs6s. anyone here have one?

(Jul 26 07, 06:55)pretty late but i have a B6 S4. i've had it for 15 days now. it's already going into the dealer for some catalytic converter problem, which they won't tell me exactly what it it. at least i get a new B7 A4 while it's in the shop.
- -sputnik-0
wow vwsung, that sucks :\
i'd love to hear what that problem is when they finally tell you
- joyride0
catalytic converter problems? I'd love to hear what is wrong with it.
Cats are too simple to be partly broken or something. Is the car pushing a code?
- vwsung18t0
i haven 4 years of warranty on it so for at least years, i shouldn't have to pay for anything that breaks. and i heard of lots of expensive repairs on audi forums.
and i'll be saving up for the timing chain "adjust" at 75k miles that costs $1k even though audi technicians have said that it's not neccessary until at least 150k miles but if you don't get it done, the dealer will void your warranty.

(Jul 26 07, 08:39)yeah the CEL is on. it might be a sensor that's off because it has an aftermarket catback. hopefully, that's all that it is.
- canuck0
fugly.
- -sputnik-0
i wrote off audis for a long time because i had 2 close friends who had really nutty problems with them. like one of them ordered an a4 station wagon and it was delivered, brand new, with a cracked engine block. wtf?
but that was a while ago and i still think they're worth a close look...especially the S and RS models
- jox0

(Jul 26 07, 08:43)Does it sound like a leaf blower at idle? Have you checked the coolant temp sensor?? I can't tell you how many times that broke on my B6 S and my shop kept saying catalytic converters.. It throws a CEL too.
A bitch to do yourself because it's tight like a man's anus, but the sensor itself is like 30 bucks so it's a fairly cheap error...
