meeko, in regards to grey market deals. i am in the market for a nikon d300. i searched google and got a sponsor site called www.shopcartusa.com. They had the camera, normally $1800 for the body, at $1200 (it is advertised for $999 now!). this sounded great! i looked and they had great reviews. this set off a red flag though. so i searched the site name and found out there was quite the dark side. they use several different names but they are still scamming people. and one person mentioned that they bought a camera from someone similar (they are all linked), and something went wrong and nikon wouldn't replace the camera because the warranty wasn't covered in the US.
here are some discussions of the scamms:

http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-…careful out there. good luck. spend your money wisely. patience pays off with a good camera.
peace.

yup, I almost bought from Broadway Photo (www.bwayphoto.com). Site looks great, super prices, seemingly legit (they've been around for decades).
But I was suspicious when they didn't show up in Bizrate. Did a search and found this:

You get what you pay for, if its too good to be true...

Yeah, this place I called before ordering (body only $500!!!) I asked do you have in stock? and he said, do you want the chinese model?
And I was like.. what in the name of jah does that mean?!?!!!and he answered, well the chinese model comes with no cables, no manuals, no box, and I just hanged up before he finished.
I'm an idiot for believing that price.
- chalk one up for meeklo. if it sounds too good to be true... :(jaylarson
- sounds like a fake one. rip off.akrokdesign

yeah man, the 'good deals' on these cameras almost always result in something going wrong. i have read pretty in-depth about a lot of these so called legitimate camera dealerships...everything i have read about the 'fantastic deal' offered is always connected to one of three things:
1. you also 'should' buy this great package deal for only $XXX more. if you don't want it, the camera is suddenly 'out of stock'
2. you buy the camera and they end up charging you a ridiculous amount to ship it and to make sure you actually get the product.
3. you buy a one-off (ie. chinese manufactured model with no warranty/cables/manuals, or a refurb. model that is 'fuly functional' but has scratches all over it).just be careful and buy from a reputable dealer. that is too much money to be spending on some half-assed pile of shit that you are going to be worried about breaking within 3 days.

Great camera, great lens, the canon 10-22 is worth the extra over the sigma 10-20. Buy from a reputable dealer as stated above and you will love this setup.

I would like your experienced opinion. I'm a graphic designer and in quite a few occasions I've been asked to shoot product photos (small things mechanical parts, hats, t-shirts, and vehicles). We have a small light cube with a couple of florescent lights. I'm currently using a Canon Digital Rebel and it's worked decently for the last couple of years but looking to step it up. So we're looking at buying Canon 40D but not sure what kind of lens to buy. Any suggestions?
- Meeklo0
Hey soup! I'm not only in your same city, but on your same situation.
I think the standard lens that comes with the camera is good enough to shoot small products, you dont want to go too wide or too close (assuming that your light cube is small)But then again, I'm not a pro.

For product shots, I would be using a Canon 60mm Macro or Canon 100mm Macro. You wont really get sharper shots off anything elese and the 1:1 magnification really comes into play with small objects.
shot with my 60mm
For shooting cars etc you might want to look at a 17-40L, 16-35L or 17-55 IS USM depending on budget. 40D is a nice camera but lenses play a bigger role in colour, contrast, sharpness etc.
Might also be worth investing in some studio lights like alien bees, will depend on budget but you should be able to get a decent light setup for under a bag of sand (grand). Lighting makes a huge difference too.

i'm going to get a 40D also. the 400D doesnt quite cut it. whats the 17-85 mm kit lens like?
- ComicSans_Rocks0
I would wait for the EOS Rebel XSi that will be released in April. At $800- this 12.1 megapixel camera is a bargain and a fractiona of the $1,300 for the 40D. I am an older Digital Rebel and love it, I will upgrade as soon as available. BYW - be sure to but quality lens, they will make all the difference. Cheers.

you just answered my question, comic. thanks.
i'm a beginner. i want a decent camera for events and shooting promo shots(models and adult shots). no fast action. even though the EOS Rebel XSi looks like to much camera for that, at least i don't have to worry about outgrowing it.
what kind of lens would YOU(READERS) buy for this model, and why? just curious
- alicetheblue0
just picked up the 40D with the 17-85
I LOVE IT
and i can use "live view shooting" to compose shots using my
computer's lcd screen - what a bonus.
- db_gd0
Yeah, new model is out soon 450D or XSI 12.1mp I think. Live view, most of the features of the 40D but noise is questionable. Personally i'm making the move from 400D to 40D as it feels a lot nicer also for the weatherproofing. I've just bought the 17-40 f4 L too, very nice glass. Chasing megapixels won't get you better pics though. I also used a 17-85 IS USM, wasn't bowled over by the quality, especially wide open. It's beter than a standard kit lens though and the IS is very handy.
- do you use Adobe Bridge - Camera Raw
(or Aperature or lightroom?
alicetheblue - I use Lightroom at the moment, would like to move over to Aperture but my Mac ain't quick enough to run it properly.db_gd
- Bridge in CS3 looks likegood place to start - since I have been into photoshop for ever.
Have you used it?alicetheblue - bridge in PS is great. it's almost all you need.forcetwelve
- thanks forcetwelve
