Thing about abortion laws is that they were pretty much set in stone on a constitutional level decades ago and any change to them now will always be framed as unconstitutional, because they are. Abortions will always be necessary for some situations, and that is the right of the people to decide for themselves. Period.
- I wouldn't be too sure about that. Liberal justices seem to think the conservative court is paving the way to overturn previous rulings.yuekit
- https://www.nytimes.…yuekit
- Not saying it will happen, but it could. Let's not pretend there are any real rules here, other than exercising power.yuekit
- It won’t happen.monospaced
- The expectation seems to be that the SC will either reverse Roe v. Wade entirely, or chip away at it slowly.yuekit
- Not sure why you think it won't happen. This has been a long standing goal of the conservative movement. That's why they nominated all these guys like Gorsuchyuekit
- and Kavanaugh.yuekit
- It’s hopeful thinking but also trust in a constitutional ruling. Their continued failure to overturn it is testament to its strength. It can’t be chipped at thomonospaced
- If it does get overturned, it will spur a massive opposition to reinstate it for the rest of time. Because abortion rights are protected under the 14th ammendmemonospaced
- Their failure to overturn it is testament to the fact that hardline conservatives never had a majority on the Supreme Court before. Now they do.yuekit
- That does help. Fingers crossed the good powers that be prevail over them.monospaced
- well on constitutional level is a bit of a stretch. to argue roe vs wade and 14th amendment gets into a alot of originalist issues********
- A biq question of the supreme court would be acknowledging the terms for abortion. which i mentioned earlier. Logically and knowledgable about precedence based********

- but also acknowlgding those states are full of people voting clearly for politicians for said policies. As much as i am for abortion it feels like a state right********
- and better delegated by those involved. plus this would settle opinions about SC and building up there power.********
- but holy christ man. a person not trying to force beliefs and ankowledging difference of opinions! what the fuck is this!...********
- @deathboy, I am not making the argument, the courts did in 1972, so I don't have to. You're arguing with actual law of the land.monospaced
- If we allow this to be state level, then millions of women will be affected, and each state would have to deal with the inevitable fallout:monospaced
- more unwanted births, more burden on the taxpayers, more welfare, more ruined lives, more economic insecurity, and on and on ... pro-life is not what this is :(monospaced
- so really, the people who are arguing that they dont want their tax dollars going to cheap abortions want it instead to go to life support for decadesmonospaced
- i dont disagree, but you fail to realize the "market" of ideas. Since alabama chose there leaning what other states swung in opposite direction?********
- the state matter is giving more pendulums to sort out peoples feelings vs federal rule.********
- Im split on wether federal rule is necessary. I hope it's not needed. but i think anyone challenging it at federal court could easily win by identifying how we********
- perceive age. im not 36+9 months. My age and existence so to speak begins at birth. Even people who believe shit happens at conception accepts runs with age********
- it would undermine the arguement of birth at heart beat considering that no one even supporters count it.********

^^ 3 more years of "Scomo" and the fucken smug right wing dickwads.
But Labor really fucked up their campaign. As smug as those on the right are with their win, a big chunk of the population are heartily sick of the far left lecturing many about how they should think. And if you were living up in outback QLD and your only source of income was a job working for a mining company or similar, and you had a bunch of chardonnay sipping twits in Brunswick telling you that you should vote to shut down the company that helps you feed your family, what do you think the reaction will be?
The left need to change their methods. If you want to shut down a coal mine, how about offering an immediate solution to the workers that will be affected.
When you hang your campaign on climate change and increasing taxes, it's not going to work. I hoped it would but it's clear now a more moderate line needs to be followed if they're ever going to get back in power.

Trump loses lawsuit challenging subpoena for financial records

I came across an interesting point being made about why is it that the most successful Republicans neither live in nor vacation in Red states/towns/cities?
Take a look at ANY conservative with money/power and see where they live. Almost universally they live/vacation in blue enclaves, blue cities, or blue states. Because the scam is even they know solid red places are typically shite in terms of quality of life regarding any pick-your-metric that looks at education, healthcare, economy, disease, employment, etc..
1. Trump. Lives in New York
2. Hannity. New York
3. Coulter. New York
4. Shapiro. California
5. Alex Jones. Austin, Tx
6. Limbaugh. Palm Beach County Florida
7. Michael Savage. Beverly Hills California, Palm Beach County Florida
8. Lahren. California
9. Sheldon Adelson. Las Vegas Nevada
10. David Koch. New York
11. Rebekah Mercer. New York
12. Bill Oreilly. New YorkGlenn Beck vacations in New York to see plays and the opera. Limbaugh plays in golf tournaments with the wealthiest people on planet earth, Hannity's luxury palaces in Vermont and New York, Donald Trump flying to Palm Beach County Florida every other week.
Funny how these conservatives with all the resources and access to go and fo anything they want typically reside or spend their time in solid blue places. The only time you'll see them in red areas is when they're selling books, on promotional tours, or campaigning. Think Trump, Hannity or Limbaugh would ever in a million years vacation or move to West Virginia, Alabama, or Kansas?
“We love how great this place is! Buy my new book tells you how liberals are ruining society!”, the conservative con artists shout to the cheering crowds. Of course, they would never live there or even think about having these people as neighbors.
The biggest con is these poor suckers being completely oblivious to how much the people they admire the most utterly fucking loathe and despise them. The coal miners are oblivious to the reality that they are being used for their political support and money. Trump is wealthy Manhattan elitist, in his brain the coal miner isn't even worthy enough to wipe his fucking ass. But hey, at least the miner is up to date on the latest Glenn Beck book installment, how socialism is destroying America. He may not have a pot to piss in, but at least he's helping prop up Beck financially so that he can take another lavish and exotic vacation in New York City.
The biggest scam of all.
Also to the people who may say "but Florida and Texas aren't blue", read what I said. Blue enclaves/blue cities/blue states. Austin, Texas is SOLID BLUE and Palm Beach County, Florida is SOLID BLUE. Where does Limbaugh live? Trump vacation? Palm Beach Florida. Where was Roger Stone living when he was arrested by FBI agents? SOLID BLUE Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Florida. Where was Steve Bannon living when he was domestically beating the shit out of his wife? Miami Dade Florida, residence split with New York.
- Since the vast majority of urban areas are blue, even in red states, pretty much the only way to avoid "blue enclaves" is to stay in rural areas.MondoMorphic
- I disagree, to contrast, here's a list of the most conservative cities in the US. https://www.homesnac…whatthefunk
- California might vote blue, but it's full of conservatives. They have a long history of republican representatives too.monospaced
- I think they do this also because they love to feel oppressed. If they lived among their own, they wouldn't be able to bitch and whine as much.monospaced
- I don't think Trump was Republican until he needed to pick a side in the election. He was besties with the Clintons until he started his campaign.monospaced

I think we would do well to stop categorizing people on the right as "heartless bastards who don't give a shit about others". Nearly all people are good people at heart, and want the best for themselves and their families, and also they would be happy to see all Americans prosper. Republicans really do believe that Republican policies will help. You might argue that Republican voters are voting against their interest (and sometimes they are, as do Democrats sometimes) but we must stop thinking of the other side as "the other side."
We're all on the same side, really. We all want the best for ourselves and others and we disagree on how to get there. I've heard Republicans who hold office accuse Democrats of hating America. This is truly toxic, and has to stop. But that's an uphill battle at the moment and so let's start with the easier goal of changing ourselves.
The first thing we must do: stop thinking of other people as our enemies. Republicans aren't trying to kill you. Democrats don't hate rural Americans. Or, if you truly feel hate in your heart for the entire "other side" I would ask you to first look at yourself. If you're screaming (or tweeting) at poor rural Americans "I'm trying to help you why won't you accept my help" maybe it's time for some self-reflection.
We start by trying to re-frame the way we think about the opposing view. The only way out of this beautiful mess is to start working together. To stop seeing every issue as black and white, and to stop demanding that every issue should go our way.
If you're still not convinced, try thinking about it this way: If Democrats' ideas and policies are so right and true, why do things mostly stay the same throughout a Democratic president and congress? If we're so smart, why haven't we solved every problem? The answer is that we're not as smart as we think, and sometimes people with the best interests at heart still make decisions that hurt people. And, if you can accept that you should be able to accept our Republican compatriots as well.
- Second last sentence, I meant "intentions" not "interests". Anyway, you get it.nb
- Hmm, it's not that black and white about just "accepting" another's view. It depends on what those views are. I recently had a colleague post on my FB pageformed
- that poverty was necessary to provide an incentive to work hard. I am sorry, I can't sympathize with that for a second.formed
- When talk economic policies, and even immigration and others, then I agree. But at many issues are deal breakers when thrust to the front (like abortion).formed
- I wish we could talk about things we can negotiate (taxes, economy, etc.), but those are harder to provoke responses to.formed
- Lastly, the reason things don't change much is because the govt is bought by the same people, more or less. Get campaign finance reform, term limits andformed
- lobbying transparency/reform and we could see a change, but neither side wants that. Ironically, the one thing both sides could agree on outside of DC.formed
- "We're all on the same side, really"
No, we are clearly not. I'm a firm believer in agonism.
https://en.wikipedia…deadsperm - yeah, so let's give tax breaks to the billionaires, gut the school system for the poor, make healthcare harder to get, and fuck over young women ... SO GOODmonospaced
- regarding your last paragraph, it's because republicans fought every single policy tooth and nail, and played dirty, and that is a factmonospaced
- not saying anyone had a solution, but even good ideas were met with ultimate resistancemonospaced
- I'm struggling to think of even a single uniquely republican policy that can be argued to help the people, that isn't based on fear mongering and gullibilitymonospaced
- hard to think of any rule from dem or rep helping much lately. and dems play up the fear card i believe much more than reps********
- more people scared about healthcare, parents with education costs, job security, and wages more so than "terrorists"********
- hell the democrats are swinging the popular product that has shown great success in electability throughout history. probably the best********
- to go one step farther on Nb posts realizing parties are just dumb people hoping and trying to create good maybe the realization is we shouldnt look towards********
- either party. Goes back to religions. We have replaced god with the state. we have to understand and accept the human desire to follow for security. A tribal********
- leader or scripture. majority is wired to follow. following when i was in highschool was considered an insult, today its common in social media.********
- its getting harder to be independent of thought. and even acknowledging freedom, let alone as a solution. we are only seeing the dimensions of the cages********
- when healthcare is broke does any new rule fix it? education is too costly and has any new rule fixed it? have the rules just not been strong enough?********
- can look back historically at college prices and you will see a large jump after regulation securing debt, or in healthcare post wwII rules and with medicare********
- medicaid. see how the markets shift naturally towards maximizing profits by the rules set by the game masters********
- both reps/dems, suck as game masters. but it is in their nature to provide solutions to problems that dont exist or create problems in order to get elected********
- politicians are not heros. hell they probably are worth less than a walmart cashier. theyre mostly all conmen (and women PC) that couldnt hack a day job********
- they largely don't believe in any party or goals. IE that booker cunt who use to work with devos and actually improved newark schools, but just trying to ladder********
- climb now. we need to ask less of the shitty politicians and realize their sales are a red flag. A snake oil.********
- 14 sidenotes in a row ffs. You need to work on this.monospaced
- real communication isnt defined by the length of a single side note. this medium takes more. duh********
- if you think about it 14 side notes probably no longer than a couple minutes and in the past a speaker could have an hour to explain case before back and forth********
- our current attention spans do little to broaden our views and more to defend existing beliefs. SImply because defense is easier********
