In the US, buy your mac from apple refurb store or a third party vendor (ie. amazon) to get a discount and avoid sales tax.
Outside US, buy from the US..

I agree with 'boobs'... I used to spent so many days trying to get wireless connections to work, or anti virus software that had to be so high that it would stop the internet working properly... and when it did just seeing constant attacks come up all the time.

because people will pay that much

Nowadays one good reason is because when you buy a Mac, you have 2 computers in one, OS X and Windows (if you really need to). So many people are switching for this very reason, and the iPod/iPhone thing.
I have owned only Macs in my life, never ever bought a PC and never will, I just don't like the idea to waste my money on crappy PCs. All the Macs I owned never failed, and I bought quite a few.
When I buy one, I keep it for 3/4 years, sometimes more, and then buy a new one. Hardware is solid, OS is incredible, and I'm totally fine spending a little more for this reason.I have to say that the opportunity to run Windows on my Mac has been very helpful when checking my website layouts.

you get what you pay for. if you really want a better product. you will pay for it.

Get a screaming machine built, then install EFiX Dongle for $150. Then install OSX.

I've worked on PCs, and I've worked on Macs.
Let me tell you something: even if you're just a student, your time is worth something.
I own an average computer for 3 years. If the Mac costs $3000 more, it will cost me $1000 more per year. If my time is worth only $20 an hour, all I have to do is save 50 hours per year of the inevitable extra fucking around I would have to do with a PC to get the fucker to work properly. And I don't mean to play games! I mean print to a variety of printers, send files, post things to the web, ftp things, email reliably, edit a video a client wants on a site, have an easy-to-set-up wireless connection, backup my phone, and all the millions of details I have to take care of in a day as a freelance, independent businessperson. I easily save an hour per week in hassle by using Macs, so, at the end of the each year, since my time is worth substantially more than $20 per hour, I'm dollars ahead using a Mac.
Now, in the past few years, all the time I've saved by using Macs I've had to turn around and waste on my wife's fucking PC! And I got so sick of ruining weekends and staying up late sorting shit on her PC, that I bought her a Mac!
Go ahead and buy a cheap PC. But just remember that purchase price is not the only cost of using the computer. And until you've worked out all the costs, don't come around all smart-assy pretending you've figured everything out.

$100... your own brother? The bastard.

vista alone is worth using a mac. it's really terrible, and frankly, proof of the larger issues with pcs. the 'experience design' of a pc is abhorrent. macs are 'prettier', but that's really just an extension of the care and thought that they've put into their os/apps/and overall user experience.
that being said, pc's have their pros and if those pros meet your needs then go for it.

it's quite simple. because people are will to pay for it.
the question of why they are willing - there are as many answers as there are mac owners..
me, i own both, and they both have their own purpose. thank you.
this message was brought to you by the Agnostic Operating System Commission and its supporters.
i'm not steve jobs, but i do approve this message.

1. a mac runs final cut, a pc doesn't?
2. A friend of mine used to work on mac, had the same dilemma as you so he switched to pc, that lasted for about a month.
Me personal have some bad experiences with pc, so i stick with mac.
Not saying that is good, its just a lesser of 2 evils...

Yes, but the expertise also shows to the experienced people how WITHOUT the experience you end-up spending through the roof.
Here is an example: i work in film, where a standard work horse is an Arri light (Mac of the lighting world) where each lights unit cost a few hundred $. So i discover those cheap lights that cost $100/light (as opposed to $550/light when it comes to Arri) then put on a cheap soft box ($50, as opposed to $200 from Chimera) and (for $150) get the exact same quality and intensity of illumination as if i spend $750. Now it takes experience to know that this is exact same thing, but for 1/5 of the price.

since you brought up the ass issue, I see indeed similarities to prostitution market here. you womanizer you. There are regular street hookers and there are pricey deluxe escorts. Maybe the are degrees of sophistication, but in the end they both will get the job done. So the decision of who to go for is a question of money + taste + maybe what your peer group is into.

i'm not in marketing but i understand what it takes to build a good system ;) did your friend spend all day tweeking the BIOS? there's many factors to make sure each part is working to its full potential within the entire system. that's what you're paying for in part. your freind might know how to build a great system but not just anyone can buy parts, put it together and get crazy efficient performance, that's what high perfomance PC brands do. branding costs sure but so does expertise and system design.

Hey listen pr2, nobody's forcing you into anything.
If you want a different machine, then go for it. People who can afford to or want to buy macs, buy macs.
If you want all mac owners so smack their foreheads and say "Holy shit, he's right, I'm ditching my system right now and building one myself!" then you may be disappointed...

Has anybody mentioned the great attention to detail on all parts, along with the exceptional quality, no clunky plastic... etc?
