If there's "probably" no god, then why the fuck spend all this money to tell everyone?

I wanna write one: "there might be a god, there might not. Stop stressing about it and getting all worked up about a few churchgoers holding signs and enjoy your life"

It's more facetious* to say cross-worshippers.

Incidentally, cross-worshippers is how the japanese referred to Christians during the Tokagawa dynasty. Incidentally the Japanese made all Euroepan traders "trample the cross" before they were allowed to trade. Incidentally, this is why the Dutch had a flourishing trade with the Japanese, because as protestants they had no qualms about trampling the cross, whilst catholic countries had no trade with them cos they did have a problem with trampling the cross.

    "Gramme;
'but I have always said that a religion should be judged by the quality of its Scripture, and the relatively few adherents who really live by them.'

Pfft. Wow. You must believe that all gays are going to hell then. You a homophobe Gramme? You'd better fucking be or I'm going to call you a hypocrite."

Moth, you unfortunately continue to misunderstand the fundamentals of Christianity. The Bible says that ALL have sinned, and that ALL have fallen short of the glory of God. This means that people who are guilty of lying, hypocrisy, slander, gossip, envy, murder, thinking about murder, adultery, thinking about adultery, the list goes on ad infinitum since people continually invent new methods of evil—all people, who do any or all of these things, have fallen short of perfection and thus are cursed by the law of sin and death. Cursed, unless freed by Christ. I am in no position to condemn someone for their lifestyle, because I have a litany of wrongs on my account as well. But, praise God, his righteousness has been credited to my account, and my unrighteousness has been absorbed by Christ's death, descent into hell, resurrection, and ascenscion into heaven.

Christ came to live a perfect life and absorb the consequences of sin for any who believe in him, and that includes gay people as well as you and me.

So no, I am not a homophone, in spite of the fact that I believe homosexuality to be wrong. I am not afraid of homosexuality, nor am I uncomfortable being around gay people. I also believe it is wrong to say slanderous things about gays, just as I believe it is wrong to be a racist.

I believe gay people should be free to live as they see fit, but that doesn't mean I approve of the lifestyle. However, I believe it is possible to disagree with a person's decisions and still care for them, still respect them as a person.

In the past I have had gay bosses and co-workers, and have always gotten along with them. I have been on friendly terms with every single one, even drinking beers together. I have never shoved my beliefs down their throats, and have never revealed my views on morality unless it came up in the course of cordial conversation; and even then, I have been careful to be careful and equitable, because there's no point in sacrificing a relationship just so I can tell people what I believe.

Call me a hypocrite if you will, I couldn't care less because you do not listen when people explain what Christianity is really all about (how many times have we been through this?). You'd rather stick to your own definition. That's unfortunate.

    • haha, "homophone"? No clue what that is, sounds hilarious though ;)gramme

^Precisely. It is a concept that is extremely tough to fit inside the human brain, I think because it is so contrary to the way we tend to act as humans. The idea that you cannot earn salvation. You cannot do anything to deserve it. And regardless of your position and what you have done, it can all be washed away. And most importantly that we all need it. Everyone has offended God, the gay issue is so minuscule that I don't see why it is constantly being brought up. Perhaps it is because people see one "Christian" with a "God hates Fags" sign....and they attribute this hate and Biblical-distortion to all Christians. This is just one small example, but it happens all the time with issue after issue. I am pretty sick of being misrepresented and the watered down distortion that most people see as "the Gospel".

"you do not listen when people explain what Christianity is"

I don't want or need Christianity explained to me. I picked up the bible long ago of my own accord and I read it. I read the one from the Gideons i got when I was 13. I read the one bought when I was about 21. What I read is in complete contrast to the teachings I see being pushed by your Churches, and in complete contrast to it's practitioners.

It's the word of God, and I see it systematically destroyed by the Church and it's followers. Gay Priests? Lady Priests? It's a joke. If you think being gay is lifestyle, then I've got hand it to you. You're nearly a perfect Christian. Most of your other buddies have already denied most of what that book actually says.

I can not take it seriously when no one else - not even the church - does.

Moth, I agree that many, many people in the Church do not take God's word seriously. Like you, I don't take those people seriously, but at the same time I am not willing to throw out the baby with the bath water.

However, at the other end of the spectrum from the liberal churches who dismantle the obvious, unavoidable claims of Scripture and over-emphasize our freedom in Christ (all while discrediting his sovereignty), there are the right-wing/fundamentalist/legali... churches. These are the ones who make mountains where God made molehills. These are the ones who think they can become holy by doing good things. They effectively ADD to the Bible when they say it's wrong to "drink, smoke, or go with girls who do." The ironic result is that they, like the liberals, end up discounting the power God's sovereign word by adding to it. They think they can actually do something to make the burden of sin lighter, which is to say that they don't take sin seriously enough.

On either side, there is heresy, there are wolves in sheep's clothing. It's quite depressing and makes life more difficult for Christians who couldn't give a half-hearted shit about being liberal or conservative. The only thing that matters is the pursuit of orthodoxy, or to paraphrase Paul: I am called as a Christian to know and follow Christ, not St. Augustine, C. S. Lewis, or Jerry Falwell.

    (1) What exactly is the probability that there is no God?

    (2) In times past the state was concerned that people believe in God because they saw faith as curbing human wickedness (God holds us accountable for our actions and will see that in the end justice is served–so watch what you do). Wouldn’t it therefore be more honest for the atheists to put up the slogan: “There probably is no God. Now watch your back because no one else is.”

    (3) Is it a coincidence that the world’s leading atheist is also a pathological Darwinist?
