I spent the weekend putting some beats together to start my BeatStars page. Really gonna put some time into this to see if i can make it a decent side hustle.

    • Yeah I made my own sampler as a school project. Instructions were in a magazine. Worked really well.shapesalad
    • I spent so many hours aged 13-16 messing around in Protracker. Better than sniffing glue like my school friend contemporaries.shapesalad
    • don't diss the glue mate. Some great music has been made from sniffing weird and wonderful shitIanbolton

A question for those of you with multiple hardware synths / drum machines.

Do you tend to record multiple instruments at the same time, or do you record each one individually.

I'm asking because my hardware instruments have exceeded the 8 inputs of my audio interface (Focusrite Clarett 4pre).

It would be handy to not have to unplug things to plug in other things and I'm weighing up whether to get a mixing desk or a patch bay or extend the Clarett inputs via ADAT or some combination of the above.

I'm kind of thinking I'll probably never record more than a couple of instruments simultaneously, and in most cases a single instrument, but lack of experience means I'm not really sure.

    • I suppose the real need here is being able to have all instruments set up and plugged in ready to jam. Not so much being able to record everything at once.mort_
    • Bit of column A, bit of column B. I'd most definitely go the patch bay route if I were you.section_014
    • Thanks. The more I look into patch bays, the more I think I need one.mort_

    mort..

ok so my setup is probably a bit over the top, but I will explain it so you might get some ideas..

    I have a digi003 with 8 inputs and 8 outputs..

I have a 24 channel mixer which has each channel going in connected to a patch bay..

that patch bay (patchbay 1) I basically have all of my synths with the patch bay set to being Normalled. Normally Basically means unless there is anything plugged into the front of the patch bay it automatically is routed through the patch bay and back out to the to the mixer.

I have an addition 2 patch bays, one for all my outboard effects and pedals (patchbay2), and the other patch bay (patchbay 3) is the input and outputs on the digi003, and the rest is a mishmash of additional synths, effects or for sending CV signals.

The mixer is used like a summing mixer, so basically its sending a stereo channel into the 003 .. but it means I can listen to everything at once without having to open a session if I want

catch is if I want to record, I need to either record one part at a time, or what I do if I'm just jamming, I will patch the synths I am using from patch bay 1 into the inputs for the 003 on patchbay 3..

which means I can record up to 8 channels (ie 8 mono or 4 stereo) into Ableton.

In your instance, it really depends if you want to record more than 8 channels at a time.. if its just a matter of adding more devices, a patch bay could be useful..

designate 1-8 on the patchbay to be connected to your interface, and then 9-24 as your synths.. (so an additional 8 stereo

then you just grab a patch cable, route audio from spot to the next and voila, more devices without needing to plug and unplug from the back of the devices..

happy to explain further if this wasn't clear

    • normally I wouldn't recommend Behringer.. but for patch bays they are cheap and do what you need.. https://www.behringe…autoflavour
    • PX3000 has the normalling switching on the top, which is super handy..autoflavour
    • take away from all this.. patch bays are super fucking useful, especially if you have a bunch of gear you want to make to talk to each other..autoflavour
    • super rare do I need to fiddle around with the backs of my synths, unless I am doing actual maintenance .. but being able to route audio quickly aroundautoflavour
    • is a god send.. want to use an effect.. 2 patch cables later, its ready to go.autoflavour
    • Thanks so much for the explanation auto. That's a versatile setup you have.mort_
    • Another option I was considering is to just expand my audio interface inputs and have everything hardwired to the audio interface.mort_
    • For effects, I use mostly in the box for now so that keeps it simpler.mort_

Any of you Logic Pro users want to help me out with something?

I've got a couple self-built templates I've made over the years to start projects, and tend to lean towards setting it up to get as accurate a final mix sound as I can. Not sure I like what I've set up and use often, and want to tighten it up or migrate to a new one with updated channel strip settings, plugins, etc. for an optimal sound when putting ideas together.

Do any of you know where to get templates that have everything sorted out across instruments like guitars, and software instruments like piano, synths, bass, drums? Ideally using Logic's own plugins that I could easily swap out with others I own, as well as a master channel with necessary plugins, eq, etc. in there.

    Any suggestions?

    • You know you can just sit back and let other people make the music?kingsteven
    • ^ Ha.mg33
    • Also, I don't mean "templates" with samples and stuff. More like channel strip templates.mg33
    • I only say because making music for me is 90% turd polishing. If you stick a mic on it and it sounds like shit get your gloves onkingsteven
    • invest in some good plugins, the difference in the time it takes to get the sound you want, logic plugins can sound great but take a lot of tweakingkingsteven
    • The idea of channel strip templates irks because ideally you want to reach the sound with as few things in the signal path...kingsteven
    • but the reduction in time and effort and improvement in sound using something like fabfilter pro eq vs logic channel eq - you can never go back.kingsteven
    • Thanks man, appreciate the thoughts. I’ve got plenty of good plugins and I’ve found good combos, but always learning, you know?mg33

I am feeling the pull of modular pretty strong with this sequencer..
less for making modular music, but as a utility

    • yeah dont dive into modular for making bleeps and blips. but there is def a case for utilising specific modules.microkorg
