Nice hardware jam (non-modular) including Electron, Vermona, Roland, Moog, & Oto boxes.

Has anyone found an ideal way to work on music in a virtual studio situation?

Last night we tried to use BlackHole but it didn’t really work very well, in fact we accomplished nothing. Now that he’s in the Ableton environment I know there’s a plugin that I’ve used while taking classes with a Live instructor, so I’ll look into that. But I thought to reach out to hear your advice on working on music with friends when you’re not in the same room. Cheers.

Devoted my day to converting to the M1 Mac mini, and running into the following issues in which I'm trying to decide if these are critical in the short-term or if I can hold out for definitive compatibility:

    - Soundtoys - totally incompatible ATM. I use Sie-Q and/or Radiator on most tracks so that sucks. Can get by without Echo-Boy; haven't been using that on WIP tracks lately.
    - Addictive Drums 2 - this is a tough one. It's supposed to be compatible, it's been updated on my computer, but it's not launching in Logic Pro.
    - Waves plugins - they've updated everything for the most part, but I'm two versions behind and the V12 updates are the ones that work with Big Sur. Lately I've only been using Schepps 73 and their guitar amp emulator (fantastic plugin, btw). I have a bunch of their compressors, but I've gravitated to Logic's compressor simply because of the side-chaining, which not all Waves plugins do.
    - Spitfire Audio Labs - this might just be a matter of not running their updater properly, it's supposed to work but keeps throwing arrows. Labs is essential.

    • m1 + audio software is a nightmare. the industry runs on decades of vst's.inteliboy
    • OK, all is working now except Soundtoys.

    I broke the seal.

this is just a quick test messing around with the the SUB37 yesterday.. nothing amazing, super fun

not here to make blip blips .. looking for functional usable cv generators and functions to create and randomise external synths.

    • that said within 2 days of having modular hardware, my entire studio looks like a bomb hit it, not to mention everything I look at I am now second guessingautoflavour
    • its price and how much I actually need/want it.autoflavour
    • Very nice. The RackBrute looks sexy. Hopefully has enough power for what you want. Heard it can be light on juice, depending on the modules you use.mort_
    • yeah its handling it at the moment.. I kind of got it as it was cheap secondhand and I had originally thought it would go well with the minibrute2 ..autoflavour
    • but increasingly I am looking at the mini brute as just deadweight and something I can put back into modular..
I knew this would happen. its like crack.
      autoflavour
    • its so brutal tho.. everything you want to buy is like minimum $450 a pop.. even simple things like LFOsautoflavour
    • Do you get a discount on marriage counselling with your first modular case? ;)mort_
    • yep basic module $500 hence i have avoided the rabbit hole... but do dream of building a small rig like this https://youtu.be/4jC…prophetone

Any of you Logic Pro user have a ton of third-party plugins but prefer any particular Logic Pro default plugins instead?

Since upgrading to the Mac mini m1, I need to upgrade some Waves compressors and other plug-ins, but don't know if I wan't to spend money on most of them. I LOVE the Schepps 73 channel strip so that's a must have, but I've lately been using the Logic compressors since they have side-chaining; some of the Waves compressors don't.

Anything in Logic you really love?

    • Do you use the Bitcrusher at all? It's an excellent overdrive. I usually use it in full 24 bit mode without any bitcrushing.section_014
    • space designer 'old forest long' is a great sounding IR. its also great for giving clean signals a room recorded sound with early reflections, just knock yourkingsteven
    • envelope down on a room reverb so it's just the first few ms of reflection and HP out all the body, mix at 2%.kingsteven
    • also, you can reduce the quality of the IR, fantastic for lofi and spooky reverbs. own a ton of reverbs and still use space designer more.kingsteven
    • the compressor is great on VCA mode, simple synth is great, tape delay (since they added the spread mode) - still use a bunch but Gain tops the list :Dkingsteven

in the last 5 days have moved 3.5k worth of equipment..
pretty much dug myself out of the hole I dug with modular in the same period.

was a little sad to sell my Octatrack MK2.. but given I still have a MK1 .. it just seemed overkill.
also it was purchased cheap in Berlin a few years ago, so still made a good 500 profit..

picked up a Varigate 4+ and a MI Rings today second hand.

    it's dangerous.

    • its weird tho, feels like I have just spent all this time building this studio and now I am just attacking it with a machete..autoflavour
    • but at the same time, some of these shiny things have been greatly under utilised.. so maybe its a good thing to flip them.autoflavour
    • Hearing this makes me think I shouldn’t touch modular with a barge pole, knowing my personality. Appreciate the warning!mort_
    • kinda the point i was trying to make with the patch bay stuff auto. gotta keep your gear in a state of flux or it becomes furniture. (much like my modular atm)kingsteven
    • fuck it sometimes you just gotta do it. ive sold gear before ive never even touched but had a big idea at somepoint of it helping make the perfect setup.microkorg
    • its fucking crack. especially once you get into the facebook groups where people are listing and trading daily.autoflavour
    • kingsteven.. patch bays are are great.. things come and go.. but being about to quickly patch them is a godsendautoflavour

Joined the Obsolete music software group on Facebook, amazed how many folks are running VSTs and software which I loved but at some point accepted they were lost to time.

AXS tracker (which I ditched when I was about 14 with the advent of Pentiums and Windows 95 and a typical 90s iconoclastic REAL (analog) synth obsession) Jut realising now what a unique and charming character it had. Gonna try and get it set up in a VM.

    • love it - the next wave of revival. i'd totally forgotten about rebirth - i loved that back in the day....hans_glib
    • too bad i don't facebook or i'd join as well.hans_glib
    • yeah, its a pity... i like the idea more that a teenager these days may be considering buying a HP iPAQ than the nostalgia of a bunch of 40y/o skingsteven
    • in the physical world, it was easy to hunt a junk shop or ebay for a lovely old vintage synth, with modern vst's OSX updates etc, gonna be harder to reviveshapesalad
    • these sort of things sadly. Still waiting Synth1 to be updated...shapesalad
    • ah ReBirth. Many a night stoned in front of the family Mac recording my jams to play in my/mates cars/houses whilst equally as stoned.microkorg
    • Rebirth & Amiga's NoiseTracker FTW.

I wish I'd recorded some of the outputs from Rebirth. When I last opened up a file, it was a mess lol.

    • Trackers were so fun - rebirth was fun toosausages

Another one from Obsolete music software. Not sure if this is nostalgia or past life regression therapy.

    Quite literally making beats.

This dude shows how to make analogue drum machine voices. Looks surprisingly uncomplicated. Adding this to my 'someday' pile

Great YT channel for modular inspiration.

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/…

They also have a new 'starter kits' series where they go into good combos of Eurorack modules to get started with.

  • mort_0

Been playing with miRack on iPad (VCV Rack app) which I think was recommended on here recently. What a great tool, for figuring out the types of hardware modules you might want. Hope some more manufacturers end up on it. Total gateway drug!

After buying a APK MPK mini MK3 I started using Melodics two weeks ago and I have to say I'm pretty impressed.

  • autoflavour2

so I ordered a second eurorack case after I filled my 6U rackbrute.
overall studio has been cut back, any excess gear has not been getting love, or even if it was getting love but could be replaced, especially if it was high value item have been sold.

I don't want to say it was cathartic .. but there has been a definite energy that went with dismantling something that you spent so long to build.

    • they don't call it "eurocrack" for nothing.section_014
    • key assets remain.. nice to haves like second rack of moogerfooger just didn't make itautoflavour
    • Curious what functions the modular is performing for you and did that change / expand since you started with it?mort_
    • I have notions of getting into it for some specific tasks rather than creating a complete system but I imagine that changes over time.mort_
    • Mort, yes you have to show self restraint! Otherwise you end up doing stuff like spending £3k building drum machine...microkorg
    • ..that has less features than an Elektron Model Samples that you could pick up used for £180. ;)microkorg
    • LOL yeah. Self restraint isn't one of my strong points.mort_
    • its cliche I know, but the flexibility of it is what's super fun. being able to take a CV signal and warp and fuck with it to create crazy new thingsautoflavour
