man i am freaking out.. i asked a friend of mine if i could play at his regular night before the summer pause, and he said its unlikely given it was only like 4 weeks away and he was already booked..
but maybe there is a cancellation..then today, i get a facebook notification adding me to the party page and I am due to play in 2 days time.
but i have been so distracted with everything else, i havent got a set ready.
frantically pulling something together.

dj's
i need to buy either controllers or vinyl turntables. I have a working pioneer DJM800, but since moving to the UK, I've realized my CDJ's will not work over here with the power source (pain in the ass).So I'm thinking of making the switch - does anyone have recs on good controllers? Ones without mixers? Also, finally gonna jump into Serato - tried years ago, but stuck with cd's and straight mixing. So i'm thinking used turntables and a serato controller hooked up to the mixer. What's most cost effective - what are good brands?
- err0
PIONEER! All my friends that used to use CDJs use this now.
theres the cheaper 2 channel version
Whatever you decide. Make sure it has booth out if you plan on playing out. Alot of controllers were made for bedroom djs.
Also with "Serato DJ" theres alot of controllers that are really cheap that work with "Serato intro". But if you want to use the real serato dj you have to pay for the software. Its a stupid flaw in their marketing. Its confusing alot of djs.
- They still use CDJs but they have this for shitty booths and mobile stufferr

Sell your current CDJ's and get new ones? Those things hold their value like a mofo. I've got a set of 850's.
I've used a few controller's, but they all feel cheap, and don't have analog mixers. The pioneer one's are probably pretty close to the CDJ line, but you've already got the mixer, so it would probably be redundant for the combo. Plus, everytime I see someone using a controller like this out, I can't help but think "Look at this asshole".
If you're gonna go the laptop route, I'd probably just get s set of turntables and use serato or whatever.

Best current free 64bit audio units anyone?
I use Tal Togu Audio Line quite a lot - nice analoguey sounding synth when you get used to it.
Any other good new freebies about?

so just to respond fully to Fadein11 and Microkorg..
The stress on the weekend was i had about 46 hours to take 25 ableton sessions, in varying states of mix and completion, fix them and export grouped stems (which often meant having to mix them again due to usually having a glue compressor on the master, but glue on a master when parts are seperated doesnt work)
then i needed to work out what parts run well together, load them all up into the octatrack, sequence all the relevant triggers and get the entire set so i could play only with the octatrack.
then go thru and collate and create a bunch of 303 patterns to feed into the octatrack inputs..
in that 46 hours i slept for about 9 and managed to only play thru the set once before taking it to the club to play for the first time, ever, using ONLY hardware.. no laptop, no DAT, no vinyl.. nothing but machines.
- in the end i managed to pull together a 45 minute set of my own music..
autoflavour - sorry, not to toot my own horn, just the last few days have been a hardcore marathon with a baptism of fire at the endautoflavour
- well done man! i thought it was just a dj set you had to prepare.microkorg
- yep thought you were DJing - well done.fadein11
- Yep well done, thats pretty hardcorelessfloor

- dope. i want that TT303.prophetone
- that and a bass station IIprophetone
- the TT303 is so much fun.. its bit of a one trick pony, but the trick never fails
autoflavour - also, on a club system. sooooooo much bass.autoflavour
- i just love my acid is all. and bass. all u need really.prophetone
- BANKattack0
yikes autoflav, we thought you just had to burn some cd's.
so because I already have my own mixer, which is a better mixer than most built ins - it probably makes more sense to get vinyl turntables (which some are cheap) and then the serato software. I think section is right. I wouldn't be embarassed to have a cool new toy like the pioneer controller, but i have the mixer and laptop ready to go essentially.

Autoflav,
How did you translate all the ableton files into something you could jam on the Octa?
Did you strip down to 8 channels then just loads the loops into the 8 octa channels then the other stuff is just midi synced?
interested to know.
- I basically broke tracks down into 3 -5 summed stems.. so all drums in 1, main sections in their own partautoflavour
- basslines, leads and drums, all summed into mostly 32 bar loopsautoflavour
- most tracks were played for about minute and half or so.. then moved into the next track.autoflavour
- i plan to get more complicated with the mixing parts, but with the time available, this was the easiest solutionautoflavour
- i really only had 6 channels, not 8.. channel 8 was the master and channel 4 was set to be a loop recorderautoflavour
- as for midi sync, the tt303 is just running in standard sync and playing its own patterns..autoflavour
- and the Virus Snow i was just using as an effects unit, which is kind of overkill, but without a laptop, you gotta do with what you haveautoflavour
- you have at hand.. also the Atomizer on the Snow is pretty fun liveautoflavour

Err,
What do your DJ mates think of the Pioneers and Serato versus Traktor and NI's controllers.I believe NI have had a bit of bother with their S2 and S4 controllers not working with macs, their forums are full of complaints about it all crashing on various platforms with these controllers. This has been reflected in a massive sale of the S2 and S4's and some shops are not getting any more in suggesting they are discontinued or the shops were getting so much crap from unhappy buyers that they dont stock them anymore.
I wonder what NI's plans are?
Will they get a new batch of S2/S4's done to fix problems or is there a new controller on the horizon?

microkorg-
Most my friends come from vinyl. So serato. Its more fun. I have knob tweaker friends here in chicago that use Traktor. But they usually play one type of music. I wouldn't like to try to play funk, soul or old disco on traktor.
In chicago most djs are using serato or straight CDs. It makes it easier to transition djs. If i play at a nice bar or club most djs just use a thumbdrive and the pioneer nexus system. Personally i dont like systems that sync beats. I love it when theres a long mix and the mix starts to slip a little. Its more human.
Ive noticed a few young kids that play juke and booty on a crap version of traktor and a PC laptop. In the end its whatever comes out of the speakers matters.
As far as NI controllers go. Ive seen a couple. Mostly on new eager djs. I dont really like having to hook up controllers when i come to an already crowded dj booth.
- autoflavour0
I know this is probably not really the answer you are after Microkorg, but i have never really bothered with dedicated controllers for DJing..
i either just use a normal midi controller (ue33 etc) or just make my own TouchOSC controller and then use the ipad.but if i HAD to choose, I think Serato wins hands down.. if only because its designed for all sorts of music, not just electronic..
Traktor seems to gear towards electronic from what i can tell, even tho NI would deny that- Agreed. I see alot of djs that just use serato on internal mode.err

midi master clock'ing. i need to do this. in love with the ERM offering but the hilarious $300ish price tag has me lolcano'ing looking at an arduino solution right now, ie: building my own.
there are several similarly-featured arduino projects out there, not exactly a clone of the ERM, but close. i am thinking i could possibly get on together that functions the same as the ERM and even clone the look of of using a 7-segment display, etc.
i also have the monstrous, 8 midi out Yamaha QX1 sitting in my closet and although I haven't really used it (ever) i wonder if i could set it up to be a simple midi master at the top of my midi food chain, hmmm.
- thoughts? also IF i manage to make a little clone arduino box that was actually nice like the ERM...prophetone
- was thinking would be cool to make and sell to other nerds b/c there are many who lust after that ERM and the need for itprophetone
