The new Mac Mini is nice. Apple says multiple Mac Mini's could be combined together to render farms/ servers.
But how could you combine them operating from one macOS account and distributing render power across all from one scene in Maya or C4D or Houdini, etc? Anyone know?
- curious about this toonico412
- Not sure about 3D apps but for AE you could use RenderGarden > https://www.mekajiki…fyoucher1
- ^ Perhaps someone made a similar app for 3D appsfyoucher1
- Almost all rendering engines support swarm rendering and have for years.monospaced
- But how do you operate all Mini's from one macOS account?NBQ00
- Building a mac mini rendering farm would probably be the most expensive possible way to do such a thing.section_014
- It looks cool. lolNBQ00
- can be combined together but you have to buy the Apple proprietary cable to do so. $1500 per cable ;)microkorg
- Lord. They just operate on the same network ffs. This is ancient in technology timelines.monospaced
- the minis have been used like this for a long time ... Apple even made a server edition specifically for stacking in a networked data centermonospaced
- But how do you set them up without having to do so each individually? Would you need to set one up and then clone it all over to each (os/ apps settings, etc)?NBQ00
- I think we need to speak to an IT Network Administrator.shapesalad
- each is still its own computer, just networked together to allow them to split processing up ... it's pretty standard and can be done with any computermonospaced
- You just network them together and let the software (your choice) handle how the job is divided up.monospaced
- yes. it looks good.********
- Nowadays, cloud rendering is probably the best solution.ApeRobot
- cloud is cloud, local is local********
- Mono you don't get my question. What I mean is: Let's say I buy 20 Mac Mini's. How do I set them up to be ready for distributed rendering?NBQ00
- Set up each one individually or is there a way to clone a master macOS account with all apps/ settings?NBQ00
- I do get your question. You NETWORK them, and then allow your CHOICE of software to handle the settings. There's isn't a single solution.monospaced
- You're assuming, wrongly, that they must be combined into a single computer with "master settings." Who told you this absolute nonsense rubbish?monospaced
- If you were honestly interested in building a render farm, you would have just googled it and learned a little on your own first.monospaced
- lol okNBQ00
- monos right, unfortunately********
- Will Safari and Apple mail be able to run at the same time?utopian
- Weak GPU? What's the point?twooh
- Renderers would utilize the array of multi-core CPUs.monospaced

- Impressive. I would still not wear a case on my phones though. Defeats the purpose of having a nice industrial design. Don't like to cover it up with a case.NBQ00
- ^Ballsy! I can't afford an new iPhone every 3 weeks so have to have my case!Hayzilla
- I haven’t had a case for any iPhone before. Never needed one I guess. Agree they ruin the design too.monospaced

- They are small, have 6+ cores, are very heat efficient, support incredibly fast and modern networking options, memory is upgradeable, and they're stable as fuckmonospaced

- Idk why you're getting downvotes. Purpose built servers exist for a reason. You can use anything for home, but in a large environment, it's a laughable premise.section_014
- laughable attempt to keep mac os server alive, since they do not bother to deliver server hardware and lock out everything elsemekk
- @uan these mac minis have desktop processors unlike the previous modelsernexbcn
- @ernexbcn true! just bothered to look at the new specs :)uan

Anyone noticed Shazam doesn't work anymore? Since Apple acquired the technology, Shazam barely recognized the English language.

Apple seems to want it both ways with the iPad Pro: it loves to tout the iPad’s laptop-dwarfing sales figures and industry-leading performance, but when pushed on the iPad’s limitations, the company insists that the iPad is still an ongoing attempt to build the future of computing, not a laptop replacement.
But after eight years, this double-sided argument is no longer tenable. Unlike virtually every other computer, the iPad is a product of Apple’s singular vision: the company designs the display, the processor, the operating system, and the limits of the applications and accessories that plug into it. And after all this time, it’s clear that whatever roadblocks and frustrations exist in using the iPad Pro are there because Apple wants them there. There just aren’t that many excuses left.
IT’S AN IPAD
- The problem is really the software. They need to look at common use cases and work with developers to address them.yuekit

Apple’s MacBook Air from 10 years ago signaled a new era for laptops, but the company’s latest refresh, unveiled earlier this week, shows how the competition has caught up. While the original MacBook Air dazzled the crowd 10 years ago, the model unveiled earlier this week is more a refresh than a revolution. A quiet revolution has been occurring in the Windows laptop space over the past decade, though.
- I have a Dell Inspiron 7000 (13"). It's built every bit as good as any Mac. So are lots of other non-Apple laptops.section_014
- thats right, buddy.********
- pretty much, except the dell and so many PC makers still have 1080 displays for some reasonmonospaced
- Huh? Dell has had 4k displays on laptops for years. On top of that, they've been almost borderless and touchscreens.formed
- Obviously they had to once Apple did. But that model he’s comparing is just 1080. Like most of their lineup. In 2018.monospaced

Mac Minis aren't for me but I was surprised about 2 things they have that previous models don't:
1. desktop CPUs.
2. non-soldered RAM.- here's a review
https://marco.org/20…ernexbcn - Considering my only use for a mac these days is for Sketch or Invision, the mini might make sense.zarkonite
- T2 chip also in mac mini. kernel panics? https://forums.macru…api

Anybody else has these fatal Kernel Panics in new products with T2 Chip? I just had a total crash while playing youtube in the background (firefox) at mbpro. Bridge Os is related to the T2.
T2 crashes with MacBook Pro

https://forums.macrumors.com/thr…- Is there no fix?zarkonite
- Not yet but they only deployed the new laptops a couple months ago. Haven’t actually had a kernel panic in years.monospaced
- After I got my replacement MBP 2018 I haven't had a single issue in the past months. It probably comes down to luck if you got a faulty one or not.NBQ00
- @NBQ00 thanks, will do a new mojave update and if this not make things better i will consult apple.api
- had a call with apple yesterday. did not know that there is a 2nd Supplemental Update that is not available over the app store, only direct over apple.comapi

Installing a SSD in my 2011 Macbook Pro, extending its lifespan a few years.
Running Windows 10 on bootcamp, weaning myself off the Apple ecosystem.
Then, when it's time to buy a new laptop, I'm getting a PC.

Fess up: Who has gone dark mode since Mojave and can't imagine going back to the other mode?
