New MBP 14 M1 Max arrived....

It's a beast. Keyboard is back and very nice, the ports, MagSafe... all back to how it should be. Most of all really looking forward to testing this Apple silicone, major reason why upgraded after grinding it out on rage inducing sluggishness with intel chips for years.

The screen quality is a jump and feels a lot bigger compared to what am used to on the 13". Personally am digging you can put the menu bar up into the bezel around the camera, have way more real estate now. If 20 year old me was complaining about notches and the inane shit we whine about with todays technology... I'd have kicked myself in the dick...

Only stick out is the new Mac OS.... nice to get a new laptop with a fresh OS... Yet holy shit some of the icons are ugly. And the new OS sounds are really weird and distracting... like a bizarro version of a mac. Am not sure why they changed them. Very questionable on who ever is in charge of this stuff over at Apple, i.e. they need to be fired.

I have been using M1 Macbook Air for couple of months now.
I'm constantly having issues with the track pad.

I can't drag objects, it double clicks. And it gets locked randomly, like the pad isn't clickable.
    Anybody have issues like this?

    • we had to return a few m1 airs in work because of trackpad issues. there is a 'firm' setting in settings that helps with the double clicks...kingsteven

"2021 MacBook Pro review: Yep, it’s what you’ve been waiting for"

"There has been speculation about whether this is the first laptop designed without a lot of direct involvement by long-time Steve Jobs partner Jony Ive, who left Apple not all that long ago. Maybe, maybe not. Given all that goes into designing these machines over several years, it's probably not that clean-cut.

But Ive's level of involvement aside, rest assured: If you didn't like the direction Apple has been taking with the MacBook Pro for the last five years, this laptop mostly feels like an explicit apology for all of that. The result: It's the best laptop money can buy for many use cases, provided you have a lot of money."

Microsoft overtakes Apple to become the world’s most valuable company

Microsoft surpassed Apple’s market cap on Friday to become the world’s most valuable public company. The change follows Apple’s Thursday earnings, where the company posted strong results but revealed that it lost $6 billion to supply chain constraints

With the new chips — how does onboard RAM work in practice?

I'm looking to upgrade a 2019 16" MBP with 64GB ram 2TB hd. I'm wondering with the new stuff whether I need like for like or whether 32GB will suffice.

Most pressure I put on it is for batch editing large files but never more than 30 in a go. No video work, all stills.

I've watched the YouTube comparisons etc but does anyone here have any experience of moving from the old RAM to the new, and how much is needed in comparison, for the same job?

    Thanks

    • batch editing large files ie. > 32 GBs? if so then the M1 has 5x the memory bandwidth to transfer to/ from memory (10x on the M1 max)kingsteven
    • still waiting for mine though. but for video work mostly, if it's just still images are you sure you even benefit that much from 64gb vs 32gb atm?kingsteven
    • large files - each maybe 30mb, so max say 1.5GB at a time...not massive massive. No — not sure although at points there is swap.craigatkinson
    • the original M1 showed that even 8-16GB was handling memory loads like a champ and that bandwidth greatly reduced need for capacitymonospaced
    • So onboard RAM is a "group" memory - it's for everything, CPU, GPU access it at the same speed
so yeah, the more the better, 32GB min on the new MBPs
      grafician
    • the more the better obviously, but in a lot of applications high system memory reqs by intel machines are due to caching that isn't required with the m1kingsteven
    • @craig it may be best if you look in to specific comparison on performance for the apps you usekingsteven
    • exactly, kingstevenmonospaced
